I don't think so...

He may serve a very limited amount of time in a very different kind of detention, before bail/probation/parole/health or whatever the deal cut sees him released.

Proberly already having dinner in Bangkok

Will be released due to ill health.

Given his state of health as reported (assuming it's not exaggerated for convenience), it's not impossible that his days are numbered & he just wanted to come home to die on the Bosom of the Sacred Mother.

Will he be actually be in a five star jail?

Is the trade off worth it?

Lets see how the election turns out,it could be a disaster for PT.

The wording was probably up to 8 years (probably actually one day up to 8 yrs)

You have to admire anyone who could release that statement AND keep a straight face.

Wonder who the double will be?

From what the wife is telling is in her news feeds... Thaksin went to the hospital prior to coming to Thailand.. He arrived to Thailand with an official letter saying his medical problems prevent him from being placed into any type of jail and instead he went to the hospital. AS for handcuffing him. That did not happen either because he was wearing a watch valued at about 113,000,000 baht.. Not sure this news in here up to date... Hmm..

Shades of Kamnan Po here. Does a bunk, gets caught, straight to the prison hospital, too old or too ill to do proper time, has a suite in the hospital for a while, dies or released/pardoned.

Justice should not depend on age or medical condition.

Going by the photo, he doesn't look like he's going to serve 8 years in jail!

Anyway, I thought it was 10 years - that's what was reported on here yesterday! That's a 25% reduction in one day, so if my maths is any good, that means he'll be released by the weekend! Unless, of courts (deliberate typo!) he's out on bail before then!

No one wears ankle chains inside Thai prisons unless they are being punished for in-jail misbehaviour.

Yes they do.

No, the normal prison population do not wear ankle shackles unless they are subject to punishment.

He still holds the rank of police captain or higher I believe. He certainly won't be in an area with other convicts. There may be some who had their relatives bumped off when he did a purge on SUSPECTED drug dealers.????

The likelihood of him doing 8 years in jail is exactly the same as the Red Bull heir showing up at the F1 races in an old Lada with Boss1 as the licence plate on it.

UPDATE:

THAKSIN WILL STAY IN PRISON MEDICAL WARD

After a medical check-up, the Department of Corrections stated that former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, 74, has five medical conditions. He will be held in a separate medical ward within the prison and monitored by medical specialists.

The five conditions include ischemic heart muscle, chronic pulmonary inflammation, high blood pressure, degenerated spine, and abnormal posture.

The food he receives in prison will be provided solely by the prison, and his visitation privileges will adhere to the same rules as other prisoners. However, only his lawyer will be allowed to visit during the first five days of his incarceration.

#Thailand #ทักษิณ #ทักษิณกลับไทย

I was wondering if maybe he's running out of time or suspects it. Let's see if he makes it to 80 in jail. (Or if he stays there that long ???? )

Anyone who thinks he is going to do 8 years is delusional.

Anyone who thinks he is in a cell eating like other inmates are delusional.

Anyone who thinks the check???? up he got is standard and they for all inmates is delusional. They must have sent staff from Bumrugrad found 5 condition one laugh " posture " will be held and watch by specislist! What inmate you know is getting that type of treatment. In general majority of Thais would go out to commit more crimes to get that type of medical treatment. ????

A deal was made today was the start of that show for saving face. A production to arrest him,  showing respect to the man bowing a process all arranged.

It is going to be a medical necessity excuse for home detention.

All of those conditions can be exaggerated. He will be transferred to a top private hospital and then released on compassionate grounds and will outlive us all.

As I believe happened with a crime boss in Chonburi. He was in jail for one day before.....

He's 74, 8 years inside takes him to 82,! Are the public expected to believe that there has been no deals made?

I see a quick royal pardon a few envelopes being passed around and the man left to enjoy his last years.

It's pretty clear why he had to land on the same day as the PM vote. His safety and eventual freedom are collateral against PT doing anything to rock the boat. Thaksin under lock and key was the precondition for senators rubber stamping their PM candidate.

Expect a long, drawn-out pardoning process, and once Mr. T. becomes a free man again, expect some other daggers to materialize to hang over his head (Revival of old court cases? New charges for past actions? Take your pick). Just don't expect a "PT-led" government to be able to do a single thing that hasn't been blessed from on high.

Thaksin will serve very little time in prison.  One of the first things that the new PM Srettha Thavisin will do is to pardon Thaksin of all convictions.  He might even state that being in exile for 17 years is "prison enough" since he couldn't be in Thailand.
