Thaksin's detention outside prison complies with regulations: Justice Minister

In a statement yesterday (Sep 14), the Minister of Justice highlighted that the detention of Thaksin Shinawatra outside of prison is subject to regulations and contingent upon a medical assessment.

On September 14, 2023, Pol. Lt. Gen. Tawee Sodsong, Minister of Justice, shed light on Thaksin Shinawatra's case, stressing that detaining individuals outside of incarceration falls under the authority of correctional commanders, reorted INN.

However, if the detention exceeds a 30-day timeframe, it compels the Director-General of the Department of Corrections to provide authorization. In the circumstance where the duration exceeds 60 days, it requires obtaining consent from the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice.

For detentions surpassing 120 days, approval from the Minister of Justice is the critical determinant.

The most pivotal aspect of this process remains the medical evaluation. Amendments to the law in 2017 ensured that detention must strictly adhere to legal and regulatory protocols, with no exceptions.

This disclosure underscores the vital role of medical opinions in establishing the duration of Thaksin Shinawatra's non-prison detention, ensuring that legal principles and standards are maintained throughout the process.

Like: How many other prisoners are treated like Thaksin? Hundreds? Ten? Or less?

And how many prisoners are in worse health than Thaksin?

The numbers will show reality. Just publish them!

In the eye of most Thai, Thaksin seems to be getting the preferential treatment by the prison authorities and strongly backed by the government and all this for one man who brought shame and disrepute on the Thai government when he did a runner when he did and now he's the darling of the Thai government.

Agreed. It's gross and shameful and pathetic. But everyone and everything has it's price and he's got plenty of it.

It's been eerily quiet on the Thaksin health front.

One assumes he's making a "recovery"?

I think the media strategy on this one is to flood the zone with government news, and the Mafia/Police scandals helps, and let the Thaksin story die down.

I expect he'll make a full recovery and get some sort of early release as mid-October was floated previously.

In Thailand, the media has NO strategy other than ensuring they don't rock the boat or tread on any important toes.

I was referring to the Thaksin media strategy, and not the Media's own strategy.

I think we all know that the Thai media has but one strategy, self-censor or die.

Yes, of course it does. NOT. Would any other sick prisoner get airlifted to hospital? Because they were too hot and wanted AC? No they wouldn't. Stupid comments, pouring oil on the flames.

"  he's the darling of the Thai government. "   ???

His daughter did not become the Prime Minister as predicted..

She did not get Deputy Prime Minister postings,  and not get any Minister position among 30 or so postings.

This family is currently not influential in Thai politics as the New Government sets to get going just now .

That's because Thaksin has yet to deliver on the promises he made to insure his relatively unencumbered return. If he performs suitably - pushing back on talks of reforms, and helping to eliminate MFP - then he will gain more influence.

They have absolutely no shame The guy steals billions goes to Dubai living the good life along with getting a few different country passport. He travels everywhere. No red notice issued on him or enforced. Then he comes back shaking hands and smiling from being Cambodia the night before the party within a few hours, it’s a life or death situation for him, they chopper him to a Hospital worries in a suite where he remains sounds like equal treatment to fix with him before he got here. Everybody was paid everybody cooperated I’m sure the doctor say he needs to stay in the hospital until the king pardons him and then I’ll go home and I’ll be all better . TIT.

Not surprised that Thaksin will be allowed to "recuperate" outside of the prison walls.  His pardon will be coming very soon after a period of time under house or resort arrest.
