Please stick to my original ask. I am not interested in import to other countries, I want to know why the Thai government created the ban, and why it is so difficult to lift it again.

To protect the local auto industry.

The ban will be driven by the automakers.

You can still import, many do... Joe average cannot.

I think you misinterpreted the original statement/question. In my interpretation the poster meant Thailand as in private businesses, dealerships, private individuals

Well, that's your interpretation of his comment that he clearly posted in black and white.  My comment was a response to what he actually posted.

Thailand essentially prohibits or discourages (enormous import duties) any vehicle importation to protect its own industry.

Thailand expressly prohibited the personal importation of used vehicles three years ago, not "essentially" or "discouragingly".

Perhaps because Thailand doesn't permit used car imports and no governments, anywhere in the world, import used cars!

Thailand also has a huge new Japanese car-building industry here.

Not true, many are chopped up in Yokohama then shipped here as parts, and reassembled. But most go to Nigeria or other places in Africa.

"Not true..."

Gawd...what are you talking about?  Thailand has not permitted the import of used cars since 2019, it's just ridiculous that you say that is not true.   I have made no comment on the import of parts.

Even to my limited translated version of your multiple posts is like frantic hand waves of face save denial typical of witnessed and busted shoplifter ! ????

Governments  set regulations on allowed imports and exports. Thailand is a net exporter of vehicles including  motorcycles .  Even second hand parts are restricted or taxed excessively.

Your interpretation of my comments is unfortunate.  If there is anything inaccurate in my comments on this thread, please point them out, specifically, then your interpretation may have some validity.

There are many fabulous, low milage, nearly new cars in Japan traded in for cents on the dollar. I have never understood why Thailand doesn't import these.

Maybe Thailand should let Toyota and Honda land used cars to ports here duty free so they can undercut the Thai marketplace?

Or even better maybe the Thai government should buy everyone one of these great used cars?

Governments all over the world highly regulate auto industries to prop up domestic players. Tariffs and non-tariff barriers. Of course there are safety and environmental rules. It does create economic distortions, but employs a lot of people too.

Australia has 25 million people still, I think the firms there gave up on auto manufacture completely.
