Second hand car import / lift of ban

I think you misinterpreted the original statement/question. In my interpretation the poster meant Thailand as in private businesses, dealerships, private individuals, in the sense that it is made easier, facilitated or encouraged, incurs lower import taxes etc. Those are, of course, government policy decisions. I don't think anyone was equating the word Thailand exclusivelywith the government of Thailand. As to the government and its agencies, of course they wouldn't engage in the importation of used vehicles since they almost certainly get better deals on new cars from the local production.

Indeed.... its absolutely obvious what was meant.

Just when I think someone couldn't be more pedantic we bear witness to some pathetic next level nit-picking. There seems to be a degree of cognitive inflexibility that borders on a mental condition.

You have twisted the thread, its not about GOVERNMENTS importing cars it's about INDIVIDUALS importing cars.  As usual you have no useful input.

Won't happen.   Too much invested and too many wealthy Thais involved in vehicle assembly and parts supply. Any kind of competition not wanted.

You can certainly import used cars into the UK.

Please stick to my original ask. I am not interested in import to other countries, I want to know why the Thai government created the ban, and why it is so difficult to lift it again.

To protect the local auto industry.

The ban will be driven by the automakers.

You can still import, many do... Joe average cannot.

Personal used car imports into Thailand have been prohibited since 2019.

They still come in  though.

Friend imported his Lamborghini Huracan GT3 in July.

Well, that's your interpretation of his comment that he clearly posted in black and white.  My comment was a response to what he actually posted.

Thailand essentially prohibits or discourages (enormous import duties) any vehicle importation to protect its own industry.

Thailand expressly prohibited the personal importation of used vehicles three years ago, not "essentially" or "discouragingly".

And to add no ''governments'' imports new ones either.

Don't think that's true. I think Kim imported a few special MB's

I was going to make that comment but most of the thread are too confused already!

Perhaps because Thailand doesn't permit used car imports and no governments, anywhere in the world, import used cars!

Thailand also has a huge new Japanese car-building industry here.

Not true, many are chopped up in Yokohama then shipped here as parts, and reassembled. But most go to Nigeria or other places in Africa.

Have you got a link for that regarding Thailand....?

"Not true..."

Gawd...what are you talking about?  Thailand has not permitted the import of used cars since 2019, it's just ridiculous that you say that is not true.   I have made no comment on the import of parts.

Even to my limited translated version of your multiple posts is like frantic hand waves of face save denial typical of witnessed and busted shoplifter ! ????

Governments  set regulations on allowed imports and exports. Thailand is a net exporter of vehicles including  motorcycles .  Even second hand parts are restricted or taxed excessively.

Your interpretation of my comments is unfortunate.  If there is anything inaccurate in my comments on this thread, please point them out, specifically, then your interpretation may have some validity.

30% import duty.

Importing used cars is not permitted by law, been that way since 2019.  Any used cars imported since 10th December 2019, regardless of whether bribes were paid, have been imported illegally.

There are many fabulous, low milage, nearly new cars in Japan traded in for cents on the dollar. I have never understood why Thailand doesn't import these.

Maybe Thailand should let Toyota and Honda land used cars to ports here duty free so they can undercut the Thai marketplace?

Or even better maybe the Thai government should buy everyone one of these great used cars?

Governments all over the world highly regulate auto industries to prop up domestic players. Tariffs and non-tariff barriers. Of course there are safety and environmental rules. It does create economic distortions, but employs a lot of people too.

Australia has 25 million people still, I think the firms there gave up on auto manufacture completely.
