Cyber Police Raid ‘Big Joke’s’ Residence

This is some funny stuff. I remember when similar instances took place under Yingluck. Police arrived and "negotiated" with suspects, giving them plenty of time to dispose of any evidence. Not saying this is true of BJ. As we all  know, this guy is super clean and a credit to the force. Everybody on AN tells me so. So it must be true.  BTW "he'll be back."

Whoever set him up did so with timely leaks to the media to cause maximum damage. to BJ as he stands for the top job.  He has many powerful enemies and I'm not surprised he keeps his team close by.

I was kinda shocked at this headline and the short report.  But as an American who is embarrassed by my own politicians and rich barons that care only for themselves and not the nation nor its people, I shouldn't be surprised about this raid either.  However, I will let the courts here decided what has gone wrong.

As for the US, I saw a headline today "American politics, the corrupt Road to Riches".  It permeates every level in the US today.

There really is no need for people to constantly bring up comparisons to the US and the UK. It's tiresome and off topic. This is Thailand. You don't need to see everything through American/British glasses.

There will be a ruling that Big Joke can't be considered for the RTP Commissioner position while he is under investigation. Sound familiar?

So no problems the last time you raided 5 houses  with 30 armed cops inside then?

I certainly hope this puts an end to his recommendations for the government to increase immigration income/money in the bank for retirement extensions.

No, in deference to his rank and influence, this was a warning to give time to conceal any incriminating evidence. He has only five houses? Pfft! That is not enough to be considered for the top spot.

You get the impression that someone is sending someone a message.

Perhaps coincidentally not long after a certain someone returned to Thailand and was very recently touted as possibly becoming an advisor to the new PM.

Hard to imagine the top cop would be so openly involved in a scheme which was so easily uncovered.
Maybe this was a "don't look too closely at certain people or incidents (like the recent killing of a cop at a party which seems to have just disappeared from the news)" kind of message.

And did they enter? A search warrant normally gives the bearer power from the courts to enter the named premises.

Failure to do so in most countries would result in arrest and the premises turned upside-down.

I'm speculating that the guy in charge of the raid was allowed in and the matter put to bed with an envelope. (Just saying).

They searched. It's in the linked article.

Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) officers raided the home of Royal Thai Police (RTP) Deputy Commissioner Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn this morning over allegations of his involvement in an online gambling operation. Big Joke denied the allegation and refused to allow officers to enter his home.

CCIB officers attempted to raid five houses owned by Big Joke in Soi Vibhawadee 60 near the Police Sports Club in Bangkok’s Lak Si district at 8am today. One of the houses is Big Joke’s home while the other four provide accommodation for members of his team.

Big Joke did not allow any officers to enter his home and the CCIB Commissioner, Worrawat Nakhonbancha, is now negotiating with his 53 year old deputy.

An arrest warrant for the Big Joke has not yet been issued. The authorities’ primary objective is to search his residence for potential evidence related to the allegations and to conduct a thorough investigation.

According to Thai PBS, Big Joke’s financial transactions were allegedly found to involve the former president of Lamphun Warrior Football Club, Pongsiri “Tarn” Ratchawongsuek. Tarn was previously arrested for operating an online gambling site called TS911.com and for money laundering through his support of the football team.

I am curious about the law here. If you want to call it that... but how can BJ refuse entry to his home if they have a search warrant? Would that not be just cause to arrest him on the spot for his refusing a court order? Did he make a stand-off with his gun to prevent entry? I have seen some videos of how the gang of police like to crash through doors and windows to get into a home to serve a warrant.. Was he exempt from this treatment?

He cited the outdated 1979 Immigration Act, which allows foreigners aged above 50 to easily live in Thailand only if they have 800,000 baht in their bank account or an income certificate with a monthly salary not less than 65,000 baht.

This also tended to be the case of the suspects in Mack’s murder. Due to the existence of these dangerous gangs, aware foreign tourists feel discouraged to visit Pattaya or invest in the Eastern Seaboard, causing huge damage to the country, Pol Gen Surachate said. Thus, the RTP needs to regain trust from tourists by not only eradicating these gangs but also some Thai officials who clandestinely aid them. As part of the efforts, Pol Gen Surachate promised that he would propose an amendment to the immigration law, especially concerning retirement visa extensions, through the police chief once a new government takes office.  https://aseannow.com/topic/1302295-thai-police-pledge-to-eradicate-foreign-motorcycle-clubs-involved-in-alleged-criminal-activities/

Woo yeah, ridicule everything!

This is definitely some political battle between 2 factions, but for the police who have to make a raid against a senior police official with access to all manner of exotic weaponry, they will wear at least basic "entry team" kit.

I see cops wearing body armor including ballistic helmet and goggles. They are also armed with long guns because pistol calibers don't work against body armor and are also less accurate.

I don't see "commando gear", and you obviously don't even know what it means.  What I do see are police officers that would like to survive an armed encounter with possibly dirty cops with access to the same type of weaponry.

Consider the realities, here can be little doubt that very large numbers of police and govenment officials, at all levels are highly involved with all forms of gambling (and other immoral / unethical areas).

Many will be very worried that BJ will soon bring down big actions to find them and remove them. And hey are reacting by rying to cast negatives about BJ, who I hope will be the next chief of police, and he still has quie a while to retirement. Given time I believe he will achieve great things to upgrade many aspects of good policeing and many good cops.

Deputy national police chief Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn believes that the raid on his house this morning (Monday) was motivated by conflicts inside the Royal Thai Police.

He claimed that the warrant used to search his house was not legitimate. Surachate, who is a strong contender for the top police post, said he has already assigned his legal team to look into the legitimacy of the search warrant.

“I believe that those who applied to the court for the warrant deceived the court,” Surachate said. The search warrant police used to raid his house mentioned only the number of the house, not the name of the owner.

If he is out of the game, it may make things easier to change regarding the absurd immigration requirement and all the harassment just to get a driving licence.

Stop those absurd TM28, TM30's and 90 day reporting. Improve the online systems and have more user friendly instructions in english online.

Have more english speaking staff at immigration offices in Provinces and cities Hua Hin or Phuket.

Stop asking for those absurd residence certificates/proof of residence documents from immigration, when people can present a blue book or a lease agreement.

Even to open a bank account in some Banks, or to get a Thai driver licence they just start to invent absurd rules as they are afraid to deal sometimes with falangs. Of course people will come up and say "but it all went fine for me bla bla"....great. But that is not always the case if you have not rented a girlie for a month to be your gf/translator/accountant ???? and will accompany you to deal with such admin stuff that is time consuming

You don't like it so leave it ? Well if that's how they see, tourism will drop, the retirees with big pensions will leave elsewhere as the competition is high in Asia or even India now getting into the race to woe rich retirees from the west.

Thailand is absolutely corrupt to the core at every conceivable level.

At least it's visable, and quite a comedy show, but every country in the world is corrupt as hell these days, the USA sticks out a mile, Britain, NZ, Australia, very corrupt, NZ is a land of thieves, people are being robbed by big and small bussines, Gangs are running havoc, children are ramming cars through shops and robbing every night, and shootings are now daily.

This has all escalated since the pandemic, and people can't afford to pay their bills now since the war in Ukraine started.

Corporations are taking advantage of this and fleecing everyone.

And what does the corrupt politicians do?

Nothing, but appoint a goon to look into it, pay the goon big money, and nothing happens, this is the world today, but I still prefer Thailand to live, I don't like NZ anymore, and as a celeb who left a few weeks ago said on channel 3 news, I wouldn't like to get sick in NZ, the health system is seriously broken, so Thailand's not to bad.
