Thailand is moving toward greater tax compliance from the hundreds of thousands of expats living in the kingdom. At the same time, banking facilities at home are being challenged. They are likely to be more expensive as the world acclaims Environmental, Social and Governance values driven by the United Nations 2015 Sustainable Development Goals.

 

In Thailand, UK customers of Barclays Bank have been scrambling to make new arrangements before mid-November 2023. From January 1st, there will be the beginning of a new era for taxation in Thailand on income from foreign countries because of a change in a 38-year-old interpretation of the Thai Revenue Code. It also comes with unique difficulties for pensioners seeking to finalise pensions in the UK and other European countries while resident abroad. The changes impact American expats less, with the Social Security Administration paying benefits directly to Thai bank accounts. In contrast, the American income tax system is based on a global earnings principle. Nonetheless, all expats are impacted by corporate moves to pursue ESG-friendly policies to further the 2015 UN Sustainable Development Goals, including climate action.

Government agendas and leading firms, including banks, are increasingly dominated by environmental, social, and governance values pushed by bodies such as the United Nations and intergovernmental panels. The trend especially includes the financial industry. This growing impetus has begun to impact Western expats living in Thailand, challenging their lifestyle with the curtailment of trusted bank facilities in their home countries. There is also an increased push towards the global taxation principle targeting those who have sought a better lifestyle abroad and, in many cases, more personal freedom.

 

UK expats in Thailand are increasingly anxious about their financial arrangements. The situation has come about due to moves by leading UK banks to restrict services to overseas residents and a new push by the Revenue Department in Thailand to widen its tax base, targeting tax residents in the kingdom deriving income from abroad.

Philippines is the way to go. It's 20 years behind in time, like it or hate it. No taxes on world income, no visa hassles and by that I mean absolutely ZERO. More young marriage type girls available and they speak English and not just "I go boom boom".

 

I am a little lost on how. climate change has anything to do with having a bank account in your home country. As Thailand is preparing for a cashless society in addition to many countries forgive me if I am a little cynical over the whole global cabal dominated governance.

Big banks are a disgrace. Mean, greedy, money grabbing, dishonest vile corporate entities. They'll sell you out for a dime. They'll dump you at the first sign of any trouble with a loan.

I'm fortunate in that I owe not a cent to these creeps.

Tax compliance now is the buzz word of the moment and happily comply with no fuss with not a hoot to any of their loyal customers.

Wonder how they’ll pull this off without forcing banks to disclose all incoming int’l money transfers? I will have to ask my bank. Seems like it might be hard to universally enforce this.

It does not matter if they enforce it immediately or not. From 2024, you are not able to generate tax-free offshore money anymore while having your tax residency in Thailand. 
Everyone with a high offshore-income will leave Thailand as his tax residency within the next months.

The same way (stupid) people say Covid (flu) crashed the economies - it did not, the reaction to it crashed it. Or now they (the stupid people) say its the Ukraine war responsible for Germany going into a massive recession or increasing massive inflation, no, it's not the war, the reaction to it. And yes the Philippines are actually quite funny, give residence-based taxation for their citizens but territorial taxation for us foreigners. They literally welcome HNWIs with open arms :)

Yes, indeed. They actually (still) like White foreigners. The only thing what pisses me of majorly is the lack of good sea view property even though the PH shouldn't be lacking. Except for that, it's a dream. I don't know why people still want to be treated like <deleted> in Thailand and basically beg to stay there.

So correct, loan you money at one interest rate and then money that they have loaned out and been repaid at a higher interest rate is then loaned to

you at a higher interest rate. They are using monies from others to loan to you.  Something like Trump and his family did for years - tell the banks their housing and properties were worth tons of dollars when they weren't and getting cheap loans but telling the tax people that their properties were much cheaper.

I left Europe as Thailand is some  years behind in this agenda. But the new government seems to be keen on accelerate everything now.

so are they going to instruct banks to add tax to all foreign transfers and expect us to claim it back ?, they do not have the facilities to do that, it took me 6 months to claim tax back on bank interest I had earned here on a savings account

 

if they want to tax me then their revenue department can claim it from me if they have evidence my income in not taxed already. That is the usual way personal taxation works.

I was a student back in 2001 and I wrote a letter to Halifax to have my bank charges credited back  I received over £3600 returned in bank charges.  Go figure and I was a student. 

Simple solution.

Don't reside here on a non O/non O-A visa.....marriage/retirement visas.

I have no issues with my big bank. The issues are all due to government regulations imposed on that big bank. These new issues are all due to CRS compliance, nothing to do with the banks. Brits that used to chuckle at US citizens and the way they were treated by the IRS are now going to have to swallow the same medicine.

This is what disturbs me being tax-exempt via LTR Visa.

 

There should be no withholding for taxes on foreign transfers. Especially when taxes were previously withheld by the issuing foreign country, ie., USA. Unless Thai banks are specifically directed NOT to withhold taxes from such Thai bank account holders, such withholding would be unlawful, ie. violation of a royal promulgation. Will the new "law and order" government care?

I just stayed here because of my wife and my daughter and because it was difficult to sell my house in a remote area. Now it will be sold and we can escape the coming Thaksin era. Oh boy, Thailand will not be the same under his rule anymore.

 

Yes you were not allowed to criticize the military, but therefore they gave us freedom. Giving and taking.

But Thaksin's homeboys are names like George Soros and so on, like THE WORLD ELITE. Thailand will be a complete dystopian nightmare soon.

I keep being told to wear my tin hat. I ignore them. It has nothing to do with climate change, it is ALL about control, control, control. The W.E.F., W.H.O. UN, and  others want cashless societies so they can implement 15 minute cities, and control what you do, where you do it, what you spend, and where you spend it. Break one of their rules, they freeze your cards. You only have to look at the lorry driver strike in Canada early January, when the Government froze all their bank accounts.....all card only. Banks will be able to charge whatever they want for transactions, and you will have no choice but to pay. No more cash work, not even a tenner from Grandad at birthday time. The younger generation with all their pay by phone apps just cannot see it. Covidiocy was an experiment on control, and to an extent it worked. Now, I sit back and wait for all the negative posts about conspiracies. I fear for my children, what dystopian society they will grow up in, at least there is one benefit to getting old, i will not have to comply.

that is why i am putting a pause of going to thailand each year for 6 months....Phillipines here I come baby
