Spread the word! More Brits in Thailand can now vote in the UK

British citizens living abroad are now eligible to register to vote in UK general elections, regardless of how long they’ve been living outside the UK. A new law has removed the previous 15-year time limit.

Supporting the awareness raising campaign of the UK’s Electoral Commission, the British Embassy in Bangkok is calling on British residents living in Thailand to check if they are eligible. The Commission is the independent and impartial organisation that oversees elections in the UK.

Those who have previously lived in or been registered to vote in the UK now have the right to vote in UK parliament elections. They can register online at www.gov.uk/registertovote and will need to confirm their personal information every three years. Anyone on a UK electoral register is also considered a permissible donor to UK political parties and campaigners.

Mark Gooding, British Ambassador to Thailand, said…

“A change in UK law means that more British citizens living abroad are now eligible to vote in UK Parliament elections. It’s important that eligible people are made aware of the changes so that they can register to vote and cast a ballot when the time comes.”

One reason they will be doing this is to identify some of those who haven't declared residing overseas.

Maybe we should get an MP in the British parliament as well, I note that the French provide this for their expats in various places including the UK.

And you really think Reform will do what they promise? Take The illegal migrants for example. The government make a big show of wanting to send them to Rwanda. But may have to listen to the high court to get it through or not. Yet it is  well know secret that the high court is controlled by the government. So it's all show. Why else would Julian Assange still be in a high security prison when they could keep him in a normal prison. Waiting for the Yanks to extradite him. Because the government being a good little lapdog follows what the US wants.

Even with taxes, they promise to cut taxes. They give with one hand while taking it back with the other hand. Not to mention they have absolutely ruined the UK with sanctions that no one other than the politicians wanted. Our vote never counts!

Reform?  Aren't they a bunch of extreme-right wing fascist thugs?  Even too extreme for Farage!

No.

That's a big No, for maximum success he needs to take over as leader but i doubt Farage wants to do it

Is it possible to vote Tory? Askin' for a friend.

  • Popular Post

The problem will be receiving the voting form from your home constituency and then getting it back to them in time to count.  A proxy would get round that, but do you trust your proxy to vote the way you want?

Reform are the mandateless, manifestoless, also-ran spoiler party with no delusions of high office.

They should easily suck up around 10% of the slightly less apathetic and indolent Brits vote and, while not securing a single seat in parliament themselves will, 1) Consign the deplorable Conservatives to the political wilderness while, 2) Denying the equally vapid, shifty and odious Labour Party of any sort of meaningful, parliamentary majority.

Kills two absolutely s**t birds with one stone.

Of course it is.

It is also equally possible to properly slap your friend.

Lack of trust? Maybe you've been here too long?

Anyway, I recall there are two sorts of UK voting proxy, one where you vote pick who you want and your proxy can only submit it as-is. It's filed similar to rthe way a 'standing order' is held at a UK bank in that you will vote for the same party every time. The other, easier form is to have your proxy do the vote pick for you. This is handy if you're a wishy-washy, flippy-floppy type that vacilates between Conservative, Lib Dem or fancy a splash of Greenery. I have never had any issues with missing out on UK voting by proxy (both methods) because of things taking too long. Possibly if there was a snap general election (nobody's going to call that for a while, are they Theresa?) or, if there was a sudden resignation of another Tory MP for being a d**k (they honestly can't help themselves) that forces a byelection.

All commonwealth citizens can vote in a UK general election..  they should make easier for Canadian and Nigerians Jamaicans Indians Pakistan. To vote 😝😝

I agree entirely and would also add that the whole idea of using a proxy is totally wrong in terms of the personal and private nature of the vote.

There is no reason why electronic voting should not be incorporated. Using the internet is good enough for banks so it should be plenty good enough for election voting then we could all vote whenever there is a snap election.

I wonder if that's because so many Brits have left England for better pastures and only the remaining immigrants aren't voting the way they want.

Judging by many comments, I do not suppose for one minute that the political Organisations will benefit from the vote from a group of people who as far as I can determine from comments a group of people fuelled by the hatred of a country that provides many of them with sustenance even though many of them do not really deserve it .

Good idea in my book can at last have a minuite say on how my UK TAX IS spent m

That's the current incumbent party you're describing 😊.

Stop the boats pah , taking the focus of the real issues is all that is , hyped by the tory press to distract the lemmings from food poverty, underfunded nhs , rampant cronieism,  highest ever tax burden ,out of control inflation , fuel poverty etc etc .. all the fault of a few thousands souls in rubber boats apparently...

Yes I think they are. Same as the expats are living under in Thailand

I believe that expats are more likely to be Tory voters :

Based on a 2 minutes Google search :

55% of British expats are men, who are slightly more likely to vote conservative than women.

Voters >40 years of age are much more likely to vote conservative. (Average age of British expat: 53)

Around 5.5 million expats in total.

So, at face value, this would appear to benefit the Tories.

So which party hopes that expats can see British politics for the messs it's in?

I am very sure he does not want to do it. After the last election he quit as leader of his own party. Likes telling the big story but not the graft that goes with it.

I have been out some time too, but kept up the NHI stamps to get the pension.

My German pension, which gets every increase no matter where I live, is higher than any UK pension I could get.

Oh do stop it... us poor Brits on pensions have enough angst.

Well there appears to be a minister for everything else  so why not?  They could start by giving the embassy staff a shake up , and then address the injustice of frozen pensions
