On February 7th, 2024, Mr. Karom Phonphonklang, the Deputy Government Spokesperson, gave a statement for the Chinese New Year Celebration from February 8th to the 10, emphasizing monitoring the lighting of incense, candles, firecrackers, and burning of paper money.

The Deputy Government Spokesperson publicly stated that the Thai government was concerned about the health problems from PM 2.5 smoke on a concerning level.

To reduce small dust particles in the atmosphere and protect the environment, the Thai government asked to reduce the use of incense and to use electric incense instead.

If this approach to the burning problem wasn't so sad it would be funny... please address the real problem.

  • Don't worry about burning the rice and sugar cane fields and all the domestic garbage and don't worry about all the busses and truck belching smoke - just ban incense sticks, I'm sure that will reduce

Don't go up against Big Agra. Don't put pressure on the selfish sugar farmers, who burn their crops and harm their people. Don't put pressure on the huge sugar refiners who buy from these farmers.

Out on the bike this morning, verges burning, fields on fire, rubbish smouldering way then dumbchai screams past in his piece of junk truck spewing black smoke and these clowns was to reduce incense sticks 🤷🏼‍♂️

What brand respirator do you use on your rides, how much did it cost, and where can I buy it? Looking for a good N95 mask for walking around Krung Thep now that the dirty air is back.

Many hotel chains consider burning incense the same as smoking in the room .

Why ? because not all want the smell of incense around them.

Will he also add smoking and cremations to the list

Here was I thinking that there would be no firecrackers this year given the spate of unfortunate events that have surrounded their manufacture as of late.

This proves one thing: nobody in government holds a stake in the incense industry.

Meh, it's still funny.  TIT baby.  Can't get more "Thai government" than this sort of thing.

Yes, and many ban Durian fruit.  Still a completely ridiculous government mandate.

You cannot make this stuff up? Why not just stop the farmers during their fields?

This and a 3-week Songkran show a total lack of intelligence within the Thai government. I am lighting an incense stick now.

Visitors to the Big Buddha in Phuket today were unable to see the normally magnificent views. Instead, it will be their hazy, pollution filled photographs that now appear on social media posts all over the world. WAKE UP THAILAND ! The world is now an environmentally conscious place. Uncontrolled agricultural burning, garden fires and thick black smoke belching from thousands of vehicles is causing immense damage to Thailand, its people and its economy. URGENT ACTION IS NOW REQUIRED.

Incense Burning? I'll take incense burning any time over the war zone like firecrackers cachaphony we get here all day

in a temple from an offerings by Chinese tourists...

What a ridiculous comment.  While you are breathing cancer causing air most of the year, don't forget to file a Thai return by March 2025 of all the wire transfers you received here during 2024 and get nothing for the money, absolutely nothing.

The action is now underway, people have been told to stop burning incense stick - see, the problem is just about solved.

Will they also ban water fights during the 3-week Songkran festival to save water????

Dumb-asses.

Noooo!! Water fights are one of the main air quality control measures in the arsenal, (or the abbreviated version of that word).

There's absolutely nothing that the government of Thailand or any ASEAN country could do about air pollution this time of the year. It's the dry season, farmers have ingrained in their minds that they must burn the remnants of their old crops and everyone drives their diesel pickups and trucks everywhere. Even if by some miracle Thailand could stop all the burning tomorrow... it wouldn't change a thing! Because all the surrounding countries do the same thing or worse. This time of the year the winds usually come from Laos and China... and guess what?... They won't stop burning or using diesel vehicles... so the only thing you can do is deal with it (I usually travel away until the winds change and the rains come back).

Incense is used by the ancients in places of worship to clean overpopulated environments to stop the spread of viruses.

Therefore this pathetic statement denotes the low level of culture of the government.

I think there are bigger fish to fry.... Oops! I guess fried fish causes pollution too! 🤫

Besides the burning fields etc. I've got neighbours (and I'm sure other expats have too) who regularly burning plastics, rubber etc. in their gardens. Plumes of black smoke shifting into people's homes but no  law enforcement comes to tell them to stop. Yet here is a government advising people against burning incense sticks????
