Thai Government Intensifies Crackdown on Foreign Criminals to Protect Tourism

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Thai government has made it a priority to tackle the notable rise in criminal activities by foreigners, which has negatively impacted the nation's tourism reputation.

In response, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has instructed the Royal Thai Police (RTP) to devise strategies and enforce measures to surveil and apprehend foreign lawbreakers.

The RTP recently convened meetings to strategize and execute initiatives against foreign offenders, with a focus on the Phuket Provincial Police Region.

Since October 1st, 2023, police efforts have led to 614 arrests for a variety of crimes, including illegal employment and offenses related to sex.

Addressing crimes committed by foreigners is of paramount importance to the Royal Thai Police, with significant cases being referred to the Immigration Bureau for potential visa cancellation.

Furthermore, comprehensive operations have been launched to eradicate such criminal activities, aiming to refurbish the tourism sector's image and bolster the security perception among visitors.

It's eternal Bob! Bloody foreigners! They don't want us but would struggle without us!

I know. We just gotta live with it..

But the temperature has certainly been cranked up a notch since Swiss David.

I could draw parallels with a particularly dark period in western Europe during the first half of the 20th Century, but I better not. For now…

When will they get around to making the streets, sidewalks, and zebra crossings safer? You know "to refurbish the tourism sector's image and bolster the security perception among visitors". I'm less worried about these so-called "foreign criminals", as I am about public safety while doing basic things like travelling or walking in the Kingdom. My perception of Thailand is skewed by the idiots endangering my life every time I go out into public, those idiots being law-breaking Thai drivers who care nothing about safety, and even less so for visitor safety.

Doing those things requires active enforcement, just like in any other country....don't hold your breath.

I doubt that a majority of the foreigner related crime is derived from visa-exempts, unfortunately for us it will come from long stay visa holders.

"Surveil"?

Time to resurrect the tourist tracking scheme?

If only the PM showed such vigor in tackling the PM2.5 issue.

Correct, but if you are "clean", doubtful you will get a problem, other than the usual  problems we get, at the immigration office.......😝

I don't wish to sound naive here but which of the recent 'crimes' committed by foreigners that have been in the news over the last couple of weeks targetted tourists? I thought the feigned indignation and outrage in the media was because the foreigners had 'targetted' Thais.

It's a cover story that the masses will buy into and gives reassurance to the 40 million they will be looked after....yawn.

Has the Russian woman had her visa revoked and been blacklisted? Need to have exactly the same treatment for her as for the Swiss doctor kicker, who got what he deserved.

It was requested of immigration, not sure if they did it or not yet.

That is a matter of opinion ...not fact. I do not think that a bit of swearing and a kick should result in a person's life being torn apart. I feel the punishment should fit the crime.

30 days in jail for kicking a pregnant woman, then deportation and blacklisted.

I actually agree with you here, though I would replace hate with tension.

there are far too many folks out there with cameras at the ready for any suggestion of temper or transgression.

Thai Government Intensifies Crackdown on Foreign Criminals to Protect Tourism

Translated:  Assume that all foreigners are criminals.  Treat them all as potential criminals.  Make it know that all foreigner as being surveilled and monitored.  Watch tourism numbers decline over time as foreigners get the message:  "Come to Thailand, leave your money, and then get out."

Sorry but you would never find such an extreme punishment if it were Thai on Thai. All punishments should be equal for all people, irrespective of nationality or ethnicity, otherwise your are condoning discrimination and racism.

You may disagree with that but that says more about you than I.

No, it says more about you. All guests in LOS, if doing dodgy stuff, should be sent packing. It is not their country to do dodgy stuff, their own risk.

Be great if our home countries did the same, instead of paying for their upkeep.....😁

It seems that Thaksin is back, only his War on Drugs last time has morphed into a War on Farangs.

Fine you believe in discrimination  based on nationality and ethnicity. Do not be surprised (in fact embrace it) if it happens to you. I believe all people should be and are equal under the law and the law must be applied equally to all in all cases.

Not unequally with minorities which we are, being unfairly treated by a disproportionate application of the law.

This is just so amateur and dumb on So many levels

They should be focussing on certain areas or types of crime

So their logic, if a thai and a foreigner are robbing a 7-11, theyre all going after the foreigner while ignoring the thai

This goes hand in hand with not revealing the dreadful levels of smog, right? Bad for Thai tourism to tell the truth I guess.
