Exactly, if I was carrying 40 baht of gold I reckon I'd notice if I dropped it.  Perhaps it was one of many bags?  She reported the "theft", or her own stupidity?

She did notice and went looking for as soon as. She even knew roughly where it was dropped. Schitt happens sometimes in life.

Well done to the police for following up on CCTV and recovering it.

Owner is happy. Member of staff is happy.

Good result.

Why is it considered theft if he just found the bag on the street?

I guess it wasn't considered to be theft, until he decided to keep it rather than hand it in to the police or contact the loser (her ID card and other docs were in the bag too).

IIRC the bag was lost on Thursday. Taxi driver was arrested today.

1) Why would she be transporting it from one gold shop to another? Employee? - oh I now see delivery driver. I have transported diamonds in London for a client. Didn't know the value but took extremely good care.

2) When I bought 21 Baht of Gold last year in Yaowarat, I was extremely careful transporting it and watching out for any potential thieves and certainly wasn't going to drop it in the strteet.

My understanding is you have 3 days to turn in found items of value. I admit I would have a hard time turning it into the police here. I doubt they would give a receipt, so you could keep it if nobody claims.

Because apon noticing it and picking it up he didn't hand it in to a police station or notify them in any way.

UK has the same law. It is called 'Theft by finding'. You are obligated to return anything to the owner or hand it in at a Police Station.

Because it is the law here in Thailand.

Many other articles have mentioned this.

Found items are to be handed in, not sold.

yes ....  especially if it's a bag with alot of money in it.   You should give it to the Thai police because they are so honest they will make sure it's looked after.

Maybe he planned to hand it in after his taxi driving shift ended  :whistling:

Thai law is not finders keepers, picking Anything up that is not yours and keeping it, is illigal no matter what it is.

It doesn't even have to be of 'value' what is considered valuable to you could be say, a dead fish. It is still theft.

I am sure the next time you find a 1000 baht note on the street you will turn  it in at the nearest police station, or leave it there for the next law-abiding citizen to do the job.
