Attention, Pattaya drivers! Starting Monday, February 3, new parking rules will be enforced to reduce traffic congestion and improve road safety. If you're used to parking wherever convenient, you’ll need to change your habits, as hefty fines are on the way.

 

These regulations focus on South Pattaya Road, prohibiting parking on footpaths and areas with red and white lines. Additionally, parking will be banned on alternate days based on whether the date is odd or even, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

 

The city aims to ease traffic snarls, especially between the Wat Chai Mongkhol intersection and the Communications intersection (Third Road). Violators will face steep penalties:

 

 

• Wheel clamping comes with a 500-baht fine for illegal parking.
• Towing fees vary by vehicle size, with retrieval only possible from a designated city facility.
• Daily storage fees will apply if your vehicle is impounded.
• Repeat offenders risk fines escalating to 1,000 baht.

 

City officials urge drivers to comply with these rules, emphasizing strict enforcement. They state, “These measures are to create smoother traffic, enhance road safety, and improve the environment for residents and visitors.”

They already have strict parking rules , nobody obeys them and nobody enforces them.

Best possible scenario is a Two week clamp down then back to normal.

I would really like to see how it pans out when a tourist has his bike towed for parking and he leaves the country. 

They also shouold cease all the rental bikes taking up parking for the people who live there as well as designating and enforcing motor-taxis limiting the places they park. 

There is no shortage of rues here, just lazy policing and enforcement. Who will stop delivery trucks double parking on Bua Khao?

No but I have seen wheel locks (very few 555) but many bikes being removed on the back of low loaders when they do enforce.

I have never seen a taximeter driver fined for not using his meter.  Mafias rule here.

South Pattaya road has signs both sides, around the Tukcom/market area that show odd and even day parking. They have been there for some time and ignored. Red/white lines clearly marked on the new pavement edge and ignored. Signs on the pavement outside the Kasikorn bank and up to Friendship showing no parking and motorcycles line the pavement.

That'll be the day.

They have been doing this for a month or two at Fisherman's village here on Samui.

People trying to head home only to find that their bike has been chained to all of the others, or that there is a clamp on the car.

There is a note taped to the bike/car explaining where the police are and to go and pay the fine.

It has become a big money earner for the police.

On my last visit there, there were about 30 or more bikes chained up and 20 or so cars with clamps.

Not bad for one night.

One twit was even trying to drive home with the clamp still attached to the car.

It did not end well.

Different rules and monitor.  How many taxi drivers have you heard of or have you reported for doing that,  Most of us just get out of the cab.

They did this at Khu Kot BTS and man, has it made a difference.  The street getting to the stairs used to be a jungle of bikes.  BTS signed it and told them the rules and now it is a clear area that is really well maintained.

 

Not even many people allowed to sell anything there as well

I've always laughed at the idea of clamping a vehicle that is causing a blockage; just extends the length of time the blockage is there!

I wish them luck, but how many times have they launched a parking crusade like this in the past only for it to fizzle out after a few weeks?

Impound any vehicle that is double parked, even for a few seconds. Especially out side banks and food outlets. Heavy and escalating fine to get it back.

Might that coincide with the tea cupboard being full?

     This crackdown will last just about as long as I can hold my breath.  What they need is a squad of permanent meter maids, handing out no parking/double parking tickets, with the meter maids keeping a percentage of the fines collected, with the squads patrolling all the major roads.   Of course, what they really need is to eliminate parking altogether on the major roads, with the meter maids enforcing the no parking. 

     Somewhat unrelated but I finally figured out the wacky, swoopy yellow striped lines painting scheme on Thepprasit Road by the U-Turn intersections.  If you look at the parking lane by these intersections, you will see forward white arrows painted on the parking lane, indicating that it is actually a travel lane, not a parking lane.  So, I think the idea was for the 2 lanes of traffic to segue to the parking lane and the adjacent traffic lane as you navigate a U-Turn intersection, neatly getting by the traffic stopped making a U-Turn. 

     Ahh, how lovely!  Now we all segue to the left and, past the intersection, now we all segue back to the original two traffic lanes.  What fun and what wonderful traffic flow, segueing this way and that!   Delightful!  Well done, Pattaya!

    Screeching halt!  Unfortunately, the brainless in charge never got around to marking those parking lane stretches where we are suppose to be segueing to as no parking.  My car does not yet have the ability to magically travel through a parked car so all the city's work is for naught.  No segueing around the cars waiting to turn.  No smooth traffic flow through these awkward, congested, too narrow U-Turn intersections.  Still a big mess.  Still my least favorite road in Pattaya.  Luckily, I no longer live in Jomtien and am not on that mess of a road too often.

Yes, hit them in their wallet that's the only way they can feel it. This also goes for other cities not Pattaya specific.
