Up the infinity pool this morning 2 Brits that came in yesterday on Qatar

Both had 60 day Evisa both were on one way tickets.....both had onward "tickets" from the sites we hear about for $10 etc etc of which I have used 3 times myself (albeit never asked to show)

 

Refused boarding at Birmingham airport after onwards tickets were "checked"

 

Didnt stack up......had to buy 2 one way tickets to Vietnam (assume that was cheapest option)

 

First time I've heard of them being refused (and they had Evisa as well)

 

Dont shoot the messenger on this one lol.....I am surprised if only because they had Evisa anyway

 

 

They got refused boarding because they had fake tickets home ?

Would love to have been standing behind them when staff pointed out the tickets were fake 🙂

   As an aside , I was looking to buy a one way ticket with KLM and the one way was 31 000 Baht and the return was 28 OOO Baht

Not "home" per se but "onward" out of Thailand

I've been using 24 hour fully refundable tickets from Expedia. Need one, buy it. Show it to the agent. Cancel it at the gate.

The Qatar check-in people at Brum are certainly thorough, coming back from Birmingham Qatar airways last year the clerk went off somewhere to check if I needed a return ticket with a marriage extension. All very apologetic said she hadn't seen one before, had to make sure.

Are you sure they had a visa? Seems stupid to pay for a 60 day visa when they can get 60 days for free visa exempt.

 

With a visa the airline would not ask for a return ticket.

Perhaps the check-in staff have become wise to the fake-onward-ticket sites....

 

 

Visa Exempt: Entry up to 60 days.

E-Tourist Visa: Entry 60 days + 30 day extension

 

If I'm not mistaken, both Visa Exempt entry and E-Tourist Visa require proof of onward travel.

Depends...  I think the E-Tourist Visa would give them an extra 30 days... 

 

And a return or onward ticket is required with the E-Visa I believe.

Yes they had 60 day Evisa....these lads were not idiots that was clear. As for Evisa and Visa exempt effectively being the same I can openly say that last entry in January I was pointedly asked "no visa" because previous 3 entries had been visa exempt hard up against the 60 days and thrd one had been extended

 

It was clear that my next arrival I will need Evisa in advance

 

I also agree that normally having that visa trumps everything but clearly not this time.....could well have been check in agents being over zealous

 

As I said in OP dont shoot the messenger on this one......I have always been dubious that these onward tickets would stack up to closer examination

I'm wondering in hindsight and will ask them if they bought them too early in excess of 48 hours prior to check in and they went off the system which you are warned that they will do

If I see tomorrow will ask

I suggest the "not idiots" entered visa exempt.

Two reasons. Both a visa exempt and SETV would provide them with 60 day stamp.

Secondly with a Tourist visa the airline would not ask for onward flight.

If someone says they obtained Evisa in advance then obviously no 3rd party is going to call them a liar

 

Notwithstanding though the onwards tickets didnt stack up

 

Let me check tomorrow If I see them. They may well have gone off the system and I'm suspecting thats the case

Not right now. You get 60 days upon entering either visa exempt or with a tourist eVisa. In both cases, you have the option to extend by another 30 days at an immigration office within Thailand.

 

I agree with those who say that getting a single-entry tourist visa is a waste of money.

There is no universal standard rule about what airlines should do in a situation like that.

 

There are the IATA guidelines on this subject, but airlines are free to follow them or not at their own discretion and responsibility. Most, if not all, international airlines are members of IATA.

A Malysian Airline full flex Ticket BKK - KUL. will set you back around 4900 Baht. You get the full amount back after canellation. Cost you nothing but does the trick.

Vise exempt entry requires proof of onward travel... Airlines do check for this. 

 

Every time I fly (back to Thailand), I'm usually using a return leg of a flight. 

I also have two passports, sometimes I'm in the departing country with my passport which does not have my Visa....   The check-in crew have always asked if I have a Visa or return flight... I then remember to show them my other passport which has the visa. 

 

This implies to me that when the can't find a Visa they want one of two things: 

1) Us to show them / present them [check in staff] with a Visa

2) Show onward travel

 

Many have said their experience varies with this - but with certainty, in my experience, IF the airline things I am on a one way (or last leg of a ticket) and they don't see my Visa, they want proof of either onward travel or a Visa.

I left out reference to onward flight not required if flying with Visa. 

Fixed now. 

A Passenger Name Record (PNR) typically includes details of the travel agency or travel agent who made the booking, including their contact information. 

 

It is possible that, for some reason, QR was not satisfied with the agency's 'history' or that they require an "issued ticket" rather than a confirmed reservation?

 

Need a lot more detail, or need to hear of more similar experiences, in addition to "two lads I met".

When you did this how soon after cancellation did you receive your refund?

 

 

No clue if you could use a throwaway for DMK-NNN, assuming you are arriving at BKK?

Ignore this, I was thinking of a different scenario.

 

Of course, you could use any THL-NNN throwaway to satisfy the onward travel requirement.

Onward tickets are actual flight tickets but are not usable by the person to fly

How they checked that it was not an actual ticket is beyond me

Your name and the actual flight is on that ticket

They are not tickets.  They are just a reservations.  You get a PNR, but no ticket number.

 

 It's very obvious that it's not a ticket because any real ticket will have a ticket number.  Also, if they simply enter that PNR into the airlines website it will show that it hasn't been ticketed yet.

Not correct. With a tourist visa an onward ticket is still required by Thailand. The info is posted in the regs and they are listed on the airline systems via 2 different systems and show on the computer terminals of member carriers. If the airline doesnt confirm and you are caught at imm and refused entry the airline is responsible for taking you back and may be fined as well

I've refunded Malaysian tickets before.  The refunds were quick.  I don't remember exactly, but it was less than a week.
