A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar today, sending shockwaves as far as Bangkok and causing widespread devastation. The epicenter was near Mandalay at a depth of 10 kilometers. The impact was strongly felt, prompting chaos and evacuations across the Thai capital.

In Bangkok, a building near Chatuchak Park collapsed, trapping more than 40 people inside. According to police and emergency services, 43 workers remain buried under the debris, while seven have managed to escape. Rescue operations are in full swing, with help from the National Emergency Response and Rescue Centre, as teams work tirelessly to reach survivors.

The Thai government has responded swiftly, convening an emergency meeting to address the crisis. Buildings in Bangkok, not typically designed for such quakes, suffered damage, highlighting the severity of the situation. The US Geological Survey and BBC reports confirm that strong tremors were felt even in southern China, making this a significant regional event.

7.4 Quake in Myanmar Sends Tremors Across Bangkok

On Friday afternoon, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar, with tremors reverberating through regions as far away as Bangkok. Occurring at 1.20pm near Mandalay, Myanmar, the quake had a depth of 10 kilometres, reported the Earthquake Observation Division. The shockwaves were felt across various parts of Thailand, notably prompting swift evacuations in Bangkok.

The capital saw immediate reactions as businesses shuttered temporarily to ensure safety, with buildings being cleared of occupants. Emergency response teams and local authorities are currently assessing the scale of any potential damage while keeping a keen eye out for possible aftershocks.

Myanmar sits on the seismically active Sagaing Fault, notorious for several significant quakes in the past, with six major earthquakes of over 7.0 magnitude recorded between 1930 and 1956. Earthquakes are not uncommon in the region, due to its geological positioning, and today’s event serves as a reminder of the inherent risks faced by those living along these fault lines.

Officials from the Meteorological Department continue to monitor the situation closely, advising the public to stay informed through official channels for updates or safety advisories should aftershocks occur. As the situation unfolds, both countries remain on high alert to ensure public safety in the face of these natural disruptions, reported Bangkok Post.

I would bet that there is far more unseen yet major structural damage. I believe most of BKK is built on mud.

... no serious problems I know of up here in Phayao, about half BKK's distance from the epicentre ... probably some cracked walls here and there though (but for that you don't really need a quake here) ...

'Kin ridiculous Thai-bashing over-generalisation.   How come all the other buildings, completed and still under construction, didn't come down also if that were the case?

True.  In fact CNN just ran a report showing how the swaying buildings and overspilling swimming pools are all part of the earthquake protection built into the structure.  The building that fell was only partly constructed.  The fact that, so far, no other buildling collapsed is an excellent sign.

more than one construction project collapsed,  and since 21 it has been a requirement buildings are to be earthquake-proof building design Currently, developers are forced to design and build quake-proof structures, but the country lacks follow-up campaigns to check on the state of buildings. typical Thai !! no enforcement
