Past couple days, consolidation my Ext HDDs.  Lots of dupe files, from a few laptops.   Really need to do that on a monthly basis, instead of letting them sit way too long.

These are mostly 1TB drives, and except for 2, got them down to the small Sandisk drives.  Waiting for a 2TB drive to arrive today, and then everything, last 2 to moved over, will be on the small SSD drives.  Wife can sell the other big, older, slow drives.

Nobody's asked, so I have to!

What's on all those hard drives????

Trying to get the “new” house habitable.

Nice bones and great floors and ceilings, but it need a ton of work. Should be my last home, so I want to do it right.

Did you use a program to find the duplicates ?

Also not a good idea to stand the drives up like a book  although they are called Mybooks...as I found out myself  if the "book" falls over whilst the disc is spinning  it can cause total failure....of course when the heads are parked (not in use) they can survive shocks of up to 500g

My SSDs do not spin!  I think the 500g shocks you mention are a little bit exaggerated.

Glary Utilities has a Find Duplicates function, but it would take you ages to find and get rid of them.

Mostly photos and videos.  Majority of the photos taken Dec 2018 and onward, as finally bought a real interchangeable lens camera..  Never did transfer any print photos over to digital.  Drone photos & videos from 2011 onward.

All they big drives are empty now, as all transferred to small SSD drives.  Wife has six 2TB drives to sell.

I have that installed but it kept crashing..however I think that's due to some dodgy ram which I think I have sorted  so I'll give it another go.

Well I just tried it again  and it found lots of nice duplicates  but as soon as I checked one duplicate file  it crashed again  bugger !

How is it that people don’t seem to get the quite simple concept of ‘early doors’ and always use it out of context - ‘early doors’ only applies to going home earlier than one would normally as in ‘did you have a late one last night?’ ‘No, early doors for me’

It's actually the exact opposite. It means starting or beginning something early.

It's theatre slang for open the doors to let people in well before a performance is set to begin.

it is also common in sports --  they score three goals early doors, gaining a strong lead before half time

I'm trying to organize my porn collection which is now over 4.5TB, pictures and movies. Half of it is sort of organized, and I'm trying to do the rest or delete very old low quality stuff. My big pride is 80's and early 90's French and Italian movies collection. The best porn ever made.

I do also have a huge JAV movie collection that needs to be organized. So many JAV idols!

Free time goes quickly and sometimes I get stuck watching a good movie or a pic series....

Only time left is for a couple of drinks and watching the latest movies or TV series.

Oh, forgot to say, I game a lot too... violent stuff, like DOOM and such.

Best duplicate file finder I've used is czkawka.

https://github.com/qarmin/czkawka

I've never had any issue with it. Using with Linux Mint.

I like to keep busy.  Spouse and I are working on the plans for a house we will be building, likely starting sometime this summer on land near Lake Mabprachan.  For relaxation, I like to read mystery and suspense novels, watch movies and tv, swim and exercise, and travel.  We will be going on a cruise in November, leaving from Barcelona, with six of my USA family members.  Should be fun.  Life is good.

I have finally got it working in Windows 7  using an older build from 2020

newest build complains about a missing DLL.

May try an older build on my Debian 11 install  as that just kept crashing.

It does seem to be a good duplicate finder  I like that it gives you full control and shows full paths of the duplicates,

others I tried are quite limited in regard to marking which you want to keep,

I have sorted into folders but still had duplicates further up or down the directory tree  and this program allowed me to directly compare the 2 or more duplicates and select the ones I wanted to remove  based on the directory they are in not on date or size or name as other programs require   I used the compare by hash slow method  so they should actually be identical files  never mind what they are named, date etc

found about 30 odd gigabytes of duplicates  in 500 files.

Nah, just move one folder into same folder, as already sorted by locations, camera body and or lens, along with year.

Let windows sort the dupes, and simply delete.   Will still have dupes, as destinations (province & cities) are usually the best of.

Camera and lens are all of photos take with said camera body and lens.  About 4 camera bodies and 7 lens.  Along with phones & years.

I just typed a long reply, and it disappeared, along with above post, now in a new thread.  I think a mod moved my post, out of old thread.

Do you actually sift through the data?  I had loads of data years ago and because of the size never really looked at it  much.  I decided to only keep about ~2% of the best stuff and now I actually enjoy it on occation. Not often but sometimes 🙂  Nobody will look at it when I die and no real reason to keep things that bury what is important is how I look at it.  I bet it I cut the 2% to .5% it would provide more value.

Got rid of a lot of the dupes, as kind of easy.  The rest, I just left, as too tedious to try.

I enjoy watching old vids of holidays and stuff, especially of daughter when younger.

Plenty of crap saved, but lots of stuff that has meaning to me.
