In a significant legal development, the Supreme Court has once again dismissed a lawsuit against former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who is also the father of current Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and a prominent figure in the Pheu Thai Party. The lawsuit, brought forth by former lawmaker Charnchai Israsenarak, accused Thaksin and the Corrections Department of unlawfully circumventing legal procedures.

 

Thaksin, a billionaire and influential political figure, had previously been sentenced to eight years in prison for power abuse during his tenure as prime minister. However, this sentence was reduced to one year under a royal pardon. The controversy arose when the Corrections Department transferred Thaksin to a Police Hospital VIP ward, citing health concerns, without obtaining prior court approval—an action Israsenarak claims amounted to a contempt of court.

 

Despite these allegations, the Supreme Court judges ruled that the Corrections Department's post-conviction actions fall outside the court's jurisdiction. As a result, no further hearings will take place, effectively exonerating Thaksin and the Corrections Department officials from these charges.

 

 

 

This marks the third attempt by Charnchai Israsenarak to hold Thaksin accountable in court since 2023, each time met with dismissal. The case has stirred public debate, with suspicions that Thaksin orchestrated a health-related ruse to avoid imprisonment.

THe Thai justice system has done its work again... and have accepted the envelopes... Ordinary people would be convicted

Too big to fail; Too rich to jail.  Same same, no difference.

at this point in the current Thai justice system, you don't need to post anything regarding the Shinawatra clan when it comes to lawsuits or suing cases because nothing will happen to them.

Miscarriage of justice? No one with half a brain expected anything else. As for ruling Thailand this is debatable. The actual power IMO lies with the military elite establishment and Thaksin plays a part in the continuance of their power and wealth aka the status quo.

Given that the only (permissible) alternative is military rule, the Shinawatras are the better choice.

 

As for the People's Party (or whatever it's called this week), we shall see after the next election. If The People were to vote in overwhelming numbers for them (at this stage unlikely), that might be difficult for the no-change establishment to overthrow (at least for the first 6 months) ...

The best govt in my time in Thailand was military, led by General Prem Tinsunalonda in the 1980s. Not only did he defeat the communist insurgency but at the same time presided over significant economic growth

Well fine. But on that basis there's no hope for Thailand ever to grow in to a fully-fledged corruption-free democracy.

Thaksin's jail free return had the collusion of so many top officials that court actions of this nature are doomed to failure

No different than around the world,I recall the prominent member of the Kennedy family in the US who drove off the bridge leaving the young woman to drown.

He didn’t to jail either or pay any any compensation.
