I've been asked the same question (slightly modified or course) thousands of times, in dozens of countries during my travels. There's nothing odd or sinister about this. They're simply curious.

Old MO for determining where to fit you, an alien, into the social hierarchy, or where to ‘sort of’ place you on the social ladder. Thailand is a status society based on wealth & status .. money, age, job, married/not married, etc. As a foreigner, an outsider,  they do not have to be polite, or show deference, as with a Thai. They can be very direct.

Be thankful. Today it is done much less often. If you lived here 40 years ago, you would get it all the time.

Give it a rest Bob.  Every thread you start is anti-Thai.  I really can't understand why you're allowed to get away with breaking one of the forum rules time and time again.  (Well, actually I have a very good idea of why you get away with it, but I can't say this - other forum members will understand...)

Something like:

"Do you think that a priori synthetic judgements are possible?'

Or do you make small talk?
