I understand the vendor get angry..but stabbing is way over the line.

It's obvious that you don't understand Thai people

Yes, it was over 60 baht, it may not seem much money to some here but to the POOREST of the POOR it could mean not eating for the day OR missing a daily meal for him and family.

The vendor could buy rice for himself, his wife and 4 children with this amount of money.

Here, I'll correct that for you----This very disturbed fruit vendor, not understand what restraint and following the law means, took his rage out on someone who made a minor mistake and ate a piece of fruit without paying. This happens every day here in Thailand, mostly with locals but the occasional foreigner will also do something foolish and partake in a minor theft. Instead of reporting him to the police, now he'll be charged with attempted murder and likely spend a couple of years in jail, hoping that when he comes out he's learned not to resort to such violence and instead use the law against such foolish perpetrators.

He didn't  make a mistake he repeatedly refused to pay. Nothing justifies violence but stealing  from the poor is abhorrent.

I'd say if you stole fruit in Azerbaijan, from an Azerbaijan you'd end up on the pavement to.

If you were Armenian, you’d wind up dead………very hotheaded folks over that way.

First most tourist from middle eastern russian and similar regio's are uneducated, rude, impolite agressive. Their main religion, muslim,  doesn't make it better. They come here to bang the girls in a disrespectfull way, as they consider women as inferior, once again referring to the religion. They don't give a f about local culture habits aso.

Secundly that fruit vendor stabbing someone on a 60 baht issue is clearly a danger to society. He's probably struggling with mental health issues. They should lock him up for a while and then put him in a reform school.
Thirdly, someone here claimed that those fruit sellers are among the poorest. At least here in Pattaya, they're certainly not. Quite the opposite. Those guys charge a hefty price, and their carts need to be refilled in no time.

Pannawit told investigators that a heated verbal exchange followed, which ended with him stabbing the tourist once in the stomach with a knife.

Nutters everywhere.

There is a simple moral to this story. No free rides. Always pay for that which you use, or consume. Everyone has to make a living. Assuming otherwise has a price. Basic respect.

I like the sign I saw in a pizza joint - sour dough pizzas.  Order and pay first!  That keeps the buyer sitting and eating there or taking it away but in any case, the restaurant doesn't have to worry about those that eat and run before paying.

You are comparing a pizzeria with a fruit street vendor. Original comparison I would say

Which is a mistake, as all crimes are. Just putting it into simple terms. Of course stealing from the poor is abhorrent. Stealing from anyone is wrong. Some think they're entitled and sometimes Karma hits them fast.

only comparing the same type of crime - we read on this forum regularly that foreigners also buy food/drinks and then flee without paying- same crime just different food.  Both restaurant owner and fruit vendor cannot afford to give freebies to foreigners or anyone else. IMHO

Normally the pizzeria should be in sida and the street vendor outside, it is easier to get away from the stall than get away from the inside of a pizzeria

A lot of vendors allow tasting of things like desserts.

Just ask ...

all depends on the criminal! not so much the location! IMHO anyway.

The "e" is there after the "T" if you look closely. It's a font size 7 or 8.

Thank you for your spotlighting....your expression in your avatar looks very cynical.

Thais have often offered me fruits to taste. If I like that fruit, I’ll try and buy, even if it’s a small amount. Thais in general are kind. As are foreigners.

"Fruit Dispute"

This would be a good name for a band.

"Sidecar stall" I am assuming that this is an illegal stall attached to a motorbike that clogs traffic and endangers legal drivers.

well, he is from Azerbaijan. maybe tasting the fruit before buying is common there.

So what?

TBH doing a minor mistake is fine.

The grave mistake was the heated verbal exchange that followed.

Ever heard of customers eating the displayed food off the supermarket shelves?

A similar mistake like this...
