Yea I didn't see the update. Sorry about that. The question had been asked and answered (apparently incorrectly - maybe!) multiple times before the update was made.

It is, indeed, a ridiculous situation.

That law was dumb anyways. Never prevented anyone from getting plastered at 2 pm if that's what they wanted.

I thought that 10lt rule got canned a few years ago.

BTW, I think your math is a bit off with the 304 cans of beer.

I don't believe it did and registered licence holders are allowed to buy if over a certain value or volume, I forget which it is.

You're correct, it was changed at least ten years ago.

https://huahintoday.com/sports/restricted-alcohol-sale-times-throughout-thailand/

Makro Koh Samui allowed me to purchase several cartons of beer between 2 - 5pm post covid, they said no problem given the quantity and my restaurant was registered in their system. I am not sure if that rule still applies and if it was country wide or local !! I also note that despite there previously being a 2am closing time law for bars here in Samui that definitely wasn't the case.

Over many years, I, as a grown-up man, have bought way less alcohol than I otherwise would have, thanks to this silly regulation... Both, my liver and my wallet say 'thank you'!

Also, as the kids are able to buy their favourite Thai beer at the small mom-and-pop shops, I guess everyone, that is except the supermarkets (and, until recently, restaurants), as well as the government (less VAT), are winners... 😆

Vietnam is going to hose Thailand very soon on all fronts barring the easy chatting with locals and then Burma if they ever shake of junta rule in future...competition is good..without it the arrogance of the rule makers in LoS is palpable.

Of course, now that I cannot drink anymore, they would do this. well Yahoo anyway. It is about time.

Tourism is important enough, the government finally has seen the light.

My understanding was that previously anyone buying in what were considered "wholesale quantities" was permitted to purchase during the forbidden hours, but that after the change you could only do so if you bought a large amount AND you had some kind of wholesale license - it sounds like your registered restaurant license allowed you to meet that standard. (I have no idea whether that's still the rule that's being applied, or if it's changed yet again.)

Thai workers especially those in blue collar work some of them tend to slouch off after drinking at noon. They never return after lunch break. Even for line assembly making it a headache for line managers . This excuse I heard from my Thai friend who has a factory in Rayong.

Then he should get better staff. I work with Thai office people, never seen that problem. Know a lot of Thai businesses who don't have that problem too. If someone would do that, they would be fired on the spot.
