Thai banking apps when switching to new phone

Featured Replies

I'm getting the idea that it might be dependent on the bank.

I need to switch Bangkok Bank and Kbank.

With the same sim.

Obviously with a new sim it's a different thing.

Checking AI it suggests for Bangkok Bank keep the sim in the old phone when logging in first time on the new phone (presumably connected by wifi).

But for Kasikorn bank, it suggests the opposite!

Huh?
Really?

Best to visit to bank with your phone , they will sort it out on site with the settings in the new phone .

Glad you bought the Samsung A56 , pink ?

I think a visit to the bank especially with the same sim card wouldn't always be needed. More like something to do if the transfer doesn't work.

My new phone is an S25 Plus.

basically the same case as the  A56 , you just paid a lot more

Just put the sim in the new phone, use phone data, turn wifi off, can use new phone as hotspot and connect old phone just incase, install apps, i only had an issue installing Krungsri app

The banking apps now use facial identification to change phones

First time you use the app on a new phone ..... Facial identification.

I "upgraded" to an S22 last year. Big mistake we addressed in a previous thread of yours. I needed an assist from all 3 of my banks - SCB, Kbank, Bangkok Bank - to get the phone working with their apps. Bangkok was the easiest, SCB was about the same, but Kbank? OMG! It took nearly 45 minutes for the bank assistant to get the damned thing running. We had to get their IT people involved, it was ugly. Works great now and I depend on Kbank for rent/utilities payments. Going on 5 months now, no hiccups.

I had a really hard time getting the Bangkok Bank app re-registered on a Galaxy S24.  Camera verification is really buggy.  Kept thinking my face was outside the circle or that I was wearing something like glasses or mask.  Took me probably at least 20 tries before I finally got it to work.  Standing in front of a bright light with a light grey background seemed to help finally get it to work.

Just go to the bank and let them do it, much easier.

If someone is out of the country, like a lot of us are, then that's not an option.  Kind of defeats the purpose of using an app as well, which is supposed to make things MORE convenient and easy.  Not less.

I read something that seemed to indicate there is sometimes another way -- to change your phone passcode from an ATM (in Thailand). If true, likely depends on which bank.

Interseting topic. As i now have a Thai ID card, should i give this to my mobile provider and the bank or will this stop things from working?

Downloading the apps is not a problem, they actually should be automatically restored if you made a proper backup using the right programs.

Reactivating them can be done at an ATM, if you have an ATM card.

If you have a new SIM, you will have to visit the branch to register your new phone number first

Yeah I'm aware that downloading the apps is not the issue.

It's the activation and the rule of active bank apps being allowed only on ONE phone.

Do you think the ATM option is possible at all Thai banks (in my case, only need Bangkok Bank and K-bank)?

As far as I know yes, but when activating it will ask you to cancel the other phone.

Note: if you have a new phone number, you need to visit the branch.

I assume you need to use an ATM from that particular bank.

Edit : I had to reactivate Kasikorn a few years ago, same SIM and I don't have a physical ATM card for ages, and I didn't even have to visit the branch, or an ATM

This is exactly what I did when I bought a new phone even though I kept my number. Much easier this way.

Did it with the Bangkok Bank app about 18 months ago. Thought it was going to be a pain after reading all the negative posts on AN about Thai bank apps. Turned out to be easy. Bank app walked me through it as I remember.

No, the Samsung Galaxy A56 is not the same as the S25 Plus; it is a significantly more affordable mid-range phone with a less powerful processor and other compromises, while the S25 Plus is a premium flagship with a faster chip, a brighter and sharper display, better cameras (including a telephoto lens), higher water resistance (IP68 vs. IP67), and longer software support. The A56 uses an older, less capable Exynos 1580 chip compared to the S25 Plus's Snapdragon 8 Elite and includes a macro lens instead of the S25 Plus's dedicated zoom lens.

S models are also world phones that support most frequencies.  A models are region specific.  They may work with some frequencies in other regions, but there may be more issues with dead zones or poor signal strength.

It's possible the functionality of the app may have changed since then and more (higher and smaller) security and ID hoops have been added.

(Appreciate that the OP is upgrading an Android phone but this might be relevant when upgrading any new Phone/OS)...

I noticed that after upgrading to IOS26 FaceID had become much less reliable resulting in me locking myself out of FaceID on the BangkokBank App, solution for the IPhone was to turn of "Require Attention For FaceID" - Though even with this off It's still no where near as reliable as it was before I upgraded :(

You're naturalized Thai citizen ?

Your question is a bit confusing. If you’re Thai with a Citizen ID, banks and mobile providers will use it — no problems, and it actually makes things easier because it’s tied into NDID (National Digital ID). If you’re a foreigner with a Foreigner Resident ID (the pink card), you can provide it too, but banks will still rely on your passport since pink cards aren’t connected to NDID.

Either way, it won’t stop anything from working. Just go to your bank and your mobile provider with your ID (and passport if you have the pink card) — and don’t forget to bring your phone. The staff will set it up for you. It may take a couple of tries, sometimes even trips back and forth between the bank and the mobile phone plan provider, but that’s normal here because of the complex security layers, not the staff. Don’t worry — you’ll get there in the end. Just be aware that if your phone’s security certificates expire and can’t be updated, you may eventually need a new phone to keep the bank apps running.

I did it yesterday without any issues and without visiting a bank.

Bangkok Bank going from Android 13 phone to Android 15.

OK, finally an update on this.

I needed to get Kbank and Bangkok Bank on my new phone.

I decided I wanted to avoid going into branches if possible.

So I switched the SIM card to new phone.

For a few days I was able to use the Kbank app on the old phone without a SIM card in it but wasn't prompted to activate the app on the new phone.

Eventually their system impressively detected what was going on and blocked me from using the app on the old phone, and then the app on the new phone prompted me for normal ID verification including sending a code.

Done rather painlessly.

For Bangkok Bank, not so much.

They had no problem with me using the app on the old phone without a SIM card for quite a long time.

I did try to login on the new phone, but the language was about a totally new account, and when I entered my info, it said account doesn't exist with that ID -- go to branch.

So of course I did (painful long wait as expected) and was told the problem was about my recent new passport which was already in their system (so why a problem?).

Even though I had done a photo scan input before while on the old passport, I was told I must do a new one as I had a new phone as I have a new passport.

So they did that at the bank after about ten fails. Egads.

All well and good, but I don't understand why they didn't do the new photo scan as part of the process to update my passport in the first place.

Oh well.

I just switched to a new phone some days ago, transferred eSIM, installed banking apps.
I could transfer UOB, SCB and Bangkok Bank within minutes.
Bangkok Bank I had FaceID, no FaceID for UOB and SCB
After registering the apps on the new phone, the apps on the old phone were disabled automatically.
