or on any other Buddhist holiday?? I was just down at the beach and witnessed a well to do french family completely exasperated that they were not allowed to have a glass of wine with their meal.

The gentleman, quite rightly in my opinion, said to the waitress 'we are not children! no wonder nobody is coming to Thailand anymore!' They immediately got up and left.

I don't blame them.

Theoretically, the table that upped and left could have spent well in excess of 20,000 baht for their lunch considering they were a group of around 10 people.   The locals lose out again.

I only found out it was a no-alcohol day when the bottle shop wouldn't sell me beer 😞

Luckily the village Mom-n-Pop shop came to the rescue in a plain white bag :whistling:

India have similar rules, some hotels can serve to non-Indians on production of a passport.

How would one enforce here??

Some people will never learn to respect local religions and customs.

Are you referring to Thais?

Obviously, aliens are neither part of religion or culture in Thailand.

A Buddhist day. That's why they're not selling kratom today !

Days like today are a useful tool for exposing the loser lager louts among us.

Why can't you buy alcohol at a 7/11 petrol station, anytime?

Amazing how “Chinefied” Buddhism has become in LOS, they usually party and drink from Monday to Saturday, take a break on Sunday, and then start again. Funny, considering the 5th precept of Buddhism is to avoid intoxicating drinks and drugs.

Its a silly situation  but they have ramped up the enforcement year by year..now there are very high fines and possible imprisonment  for selling on proscribed days...there are still some small shops that are willing to take the risk..but even they are  very cautious

Prayut stopped alcohol sales at service stations, train stations and bus stations.

Oh, is that you again bob? New account number 87 is it? How delightful. We all miss you too mutt. Guess you have been drinking so much on Buddhist holidays lately that you've had no time for us muppets here on AN?

All it says is SALES, not consumption. So get it from the local shop and pay either yesterday or tomorrow.

And went where I ask?

Two things you can do to mitigate this perceived problem.

Firstly, be organised and stock up before the date.

Secondly, most mum&pop shops don't really care and will sell anyhow on the quiet. It's just places like 7-11, Lotus, Malls, Big C etc. that are terrified of doing so as too much to lose.

Even many bars in some places will flout it if they have an "agreement" with the local cops or serve it in non-see-through cups, but it varies from area to area/province... but once out of the big touristy places, it loses its seriousness and the locals do as they see fit.

If you are complaining about not being about to be a bar-fly and chats to girls, then yeah, could be an issue in lots of places. However, if you just was a drink, then the above is usually true.

Obviously, aliens should act like guests, and respect local customs. Wherever that might be.

The horror all those alcoholics must endure for a day. Devastating.

Its against the law to sell beer at any location with a gas station

Yeah, they got the choice. Vietnam or Thailand. Bad luck. They should have used Google before planning their holiday

Yes. Me definitely.

I'm a pantheist. For me, their religions are nothing but superstitions based on fear, holding them captive to this delusion. I lived in northern South America, and I had a girlfriend there. One time, as we were lying on the bed, I noticed she had no hair on her legs and it didn't grow like a Thai girl's. I looked at her and, damn, she looks just like a Thai girl. I've flown halfway around the world, and here they are again. So, I don't rule out the possibility that the ancestors of the American Indians were Thais. And when Thais dress up in American Indian clothes and sit in a tepee at the Burapa festival in Pattaya, what a profound dissonance my brain experiences. What am I getting at? The Aztecs. Those guys had a famous religion with regular human sacrifices. The movie Apocalypse Now is simply wonderful. How insane is it to invent spirits and other superstitions. The Thais use red Fanta for sacrifices because it symbolizes blood. It seems they won't be enlightened soon. Old World. I miss the new... It's a pity that the flight there takes so long.

Just try to take an ounce of Pork to Saudi and show the customs guy there...

Whatever your beliefs are, you have to follow the local rules.

It is bad for tourism and you know it!

What a waste of a thread. Anyone who has been here more than a few days learns that any mom and pop store will sell you generic beers on any days.

Drinking in Thailand is like owning an electric car. Plan A  H   E    A     D.
