Trouble is that the departure tax is paid by everybody, the tourist tax isn't.

No one pays "the [B300] tourist  tax" as there isn't one.

I think he meant the 'proposed' tourst tax thats been 'floated' for a few years, announcements were made etc but it never really got out of the blocks because the logistics were too tricky to implement.

It would seem 'unfair' that Thai's have to pay such a tax that is intended 'only' for tourists.

Meanwhile, the government also floated the idea of increasing the 'international departure' tax - specifically to include Thai's who would holiday outside of Thailand instead of within Thailand and hence distributing their spending power elsewhere.

- Thus - ideologically at least, it could be considered the two negate each other.

How so?  If they can afford to buy their cannabis, cigarettes, beer and  sex, they can afford the 300 additional baht.

Where did the other 3.6 BILLION baht go?

Let's have some compassion for these poor politicians . . .

Very clever.

There you go. Much easier to hike this existing departure fee than introducing a new tourist tax upon entry.

Greed ultimately finds its way.

How much is a pint or half a pint at Swampy now....?    🤫

Used to be a  Family Mart there, cans of beer were a reasonable price.   Suitable for old codgers with limited funds......if the cap fits....

Depends... Not for long-distance tickets, but as for short distances to nearby destinations, that's a different story. (Might even backfire in regards to the Chinese market...)

Not sure on that , each bit from whoever lifts the fares and the strong baht becomes an obstacle to some tourists young or old. Even in quiet months you dont get little change from. £700+ (indirect)  on the main airlines. Some want to come twice a year etc. With rising cost of living in Europe/ UK its obviously cheaper to fly 3 or 4 hrs to Southern Sunny Europe like Spain, Greece  etc.,

Passengers will now face a charge of 1,120 baht per flight,

BYE, BYE, family tourists!

The sex tourists will pay anything to enter Thailand for a leg - over!

No further comment from me.

We can but hope........

How much of the extra funds will actually go to "improvements to passenger facilities and safety measures, signalling a focus on enhancing the traveler experience."

Are the current facilities lacking in safety measures?

Well the last time I flew out of Swampy was in 2009, I think, when a small Singha cost 200bht, so if you are on limited funds I think you would have thought it a bit of a rip off, eh......If the cap fits....😉

And glad you found it............:stoner:

Cobblers, they've already paid when they paid for their flight ticket.

I think you’ll find that was a joke. A good one at that.

It is different - but - it doesn't have to be...

A certain percentatage of the Departure Taxi could be used to subsidise the tourist tax - which would remove the surface ugliness of collecting such a tax.

Then - this 'tax' could be used to cover 'Tourist insurance' and eradicate the 'medical burden cost' of tourists at public hospitals in Thailand - i.e. the message is sent: "We look after Tourists !!!" = good optics.

No one will notice the increase on an international ticket - the only issue of course is the behind the door logistics of transferring 300 baht per passenger from Airport Taxi to Tourist Tax schemes - and avoiding the obvious 'snouts-in-the-trough'...

You are mistaken. The PSC (Passenger Service Charge) is a ringfenced tax applied in airports worldwide and cannot be used for other purposes.

They would have to do the same as Heathrow and have 2 taxes, Heathrow has PSC and APD(Air Passenger Duty)

The rise pales into insignificance compared to the APD at Heathrow.

Sure if you have lounge access. Not everyone does.

Sums it up as TIT (although do like the place)

mate, this is not unique to thailand, pretty much every airport taxes passengers, you are usually unaware, unless you specifically look, as it's included in your total ticket price.

and frankly, if you feel you don't want to, or can't afford to, pay, then go to a destination with lower passenger tax, or stay at home. up to you 😁

What "tourist tax"?

Maybe you mean the one that will be discussed and shelved ad infinitum, extremely unlikely that IATA will ever come up with a way to make airline charges selective.

If they ever do, there will be a lot more to complain about.

Exactly, think I was 370 baht for 80% of a half litre glass a few weeks back.

That was at the "S" gates, think I know what the "S" stands for now, they say one comes along every minute.

Of course that is the one referred to. I reckon they'll add it to the TDAC, just needs a additional step in the application process. Not hard to do i think.

Does that mean that the proposed 300 baht arrival fee are off the table?

300 B is tourist tax and the new one 1100B is airport tax.  Different.

The traveler's air ticket has the fee already in the cost for roundtrip.

Good answer, and the answer makes the survey as #1.

Turn on the room light and you will see one of those smiles.

Thailand already have 3.  This (currently) 730 THB Passenger Service Charge, a 70 THB Advanced Passenger Processing User Charge and 30THB International Arrival And Departure Fee.  Another one would be easy to add.

a fee for airport operations which goes to AOT - a state-owned for-profit publicly listed company - not to the government.

Yeah, they always say that. Does the AOT keep all the money? I'm going to be very surprised if they do.
