Two 17-year-old Afghan asylum seekers have been sentenced to youth detention for raping a 15-year-old girl in Leamington Spa. Jan Jahanzeb received a sentence of 10 years and eight months, while Israr Niazal got nine years and 10 months. The horrific attack occurred on 10 May, and deportation papers have already been served to Jahanzeb.

 

During the sentencing at Warwick Crown Court, Judge Sylvia de Bertodano removed reporting restrictions after requests from media, including the BBC. Prosecutor Shawn Williams described the attack as "horrific," with video evidence showing Jahanzeb summoning Niazal in Pashto. The victim was led to a secluded area and was violently attacked, only later finding help from a passer-by who urged her to contact the police.

 

Both defendants pleaded guilty last month and will initially serve their time in a Young Offenders' Institution before being transferred to prison. They are also required to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life and have received indefinite restraining orders. The devastating impact on the victim was poignantly described in a court statement, with her expressing ongoing feelings of unsafety and her family's shared pain.

 

Detective Chief Inspector Richard Hobbs stated that the sentences reflect the crime’s severity and the need to ensure public safety. The judge decided to name the offenders to prevent misinformation and undeserved targeting of innocents. Jahanzeb and Niazal arrived in the UK unaccompanied, with Jahanzeb fleeing Afghanistan and undergoing an age assessment in January, reported the BBC.

Seems governments would do well to have some intensive training regarding cultural differences to all those fresh off the boat. Lawyers for teen asylum seekers say 'horrific' footage of schoolgirl rape is a 'riot risk'

 

Two Afghan asylum seekers, both 17, have been handed lengthy prison sentences for the brutal rape of a 15-year-old schoolgirl in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire.

 

Jan Jahanzeb and Israr Niazal, who had arrived in the UK just months earlier by small boat, carried out the shocking attack on May 10, with the victim herself capturing the ordeal on her phone.

 

According to the Daily Mail, the footage, described as "genuinely horrific" by one of the defendants' own lawyers, was so disturbing that it was feared it could spark riots if released to the public.

 

Joshua Radcliffe, representing Niazal, warned the court, "I have no doubt that if the general public were exposed to that, we would have disorder on our hands."

It doesn't appear that she was dragged kicking and screaming. She may have guessed what would happen if led to a secluded spot. 

I feel sorry for the poor girl and will not make her responsible, but hanging out with boys is never a good idea if you don't know them well.
