Easy lifestyle and weather. I was going to say food but although I love it, I rarely eat Thai food now

Me too. Thai food gets extremely boring and contains far too much sugar, sodium, offal and spice.

What brought me here--my Thai partner. What keeps me here--my Thai partner, the good weather, a home twice as big as what I could afford in the US, good standard of living, lots to keep me busy, a getaway condo in Bangkok we both enjoy going to, good shopping, restaurants, health care, easy travel to visit other Asian countries, etc.

Much the same as me. Dragged here at age 62 by an acquaintance. Met my b/f, aged 22. Now happily ensconced together here 14 years later in a big house full of books. The books are my bubble.

Unlike a lot of people, I'll just be honest........sex and cheap alcohol.

I love books, too. Your life sounds great.

Landed in Bangkok for two days before going to the Philippines for a job interview.

Went to the Hard rock cafe in Bangkok and met Nong.

Still here.

That was 25 years ago,so far so good.

The 'new' layout of the Hard Rock destroyed the place....gutted when I went back and it had all changed.

Oh I'm so glad you used the word " partner " ,and thankyou for that pronoun .

I hope you and him are together a long time , you both sound like you have a great life !

Including your pronouns in the "About Me" section of your profile would greatly benefit everyone on this forum. This simple addition can foster understanding and respect among our community members. If there's enough interest, we could even start a petition to encourage the forum owner to create a dedicated section for pronouns, making our interactions even more inclusive.

The reasonable cost of living, large amounts of very pleasant and lighthearted people, and the fact that I spent years doing everything in my power to get away from America. And that was two decades ago, it's only gotten worse and gone way downhill since.

Life in America has become increasingly difficult. Each morning, I’m jolted awake by the haunting cries of someone in a horse-drawn wagon shouting, “Bring out your dead!” The air is thick with smoke from nearby fields being burned, and it’s a constant source of fear whenever I try to cross the streets. This environment weighs heavily on everyone, revealing a deeper problem that needs urgent attention.

Which brings me to the question: how do you actually describe why you're here and what kind of expat you've become? Not the version you'd tell a stranger on a plane, the honest version.

Are you mostly integrated or mostly in a farang bubble? Did you come here with a plan or did you just drift in and stay? Has your reason for being here changed over the years?

All year round summer. Secondary priorities was life style and young ladies.

Back in the late 1980s I actually joked about than when one day I could pack my business into some carryable device and sit in tha shadow under a palm on a tropical island, and doing my bank and control the business, while a pair of young ladies brought me cooled drinks, I was off. We all laughed back then...cheesy

But one day, 15 years after, it was suddenly a possibility. And as you have to keep your promises, I made the move – so far 21 years permanently here, and I haven't regretted it yet...thumbsup

The weather, absolutely nothing else.

If the sun didn't shine in Thailand no one would entertain ever visiting or living here

I could understand that if you were from Northern Europe but that does not explain other people

Funny, I was just asked that question the other night at a GoGo, while drinking with a lovely lady.

I didn't answer wasn't sure I wanted to answer so she did

" you came here for the pussy and what keeps you here so long is the pussy " I sat there thinking then ordered her another drink.😇

So you didn't come to Thailand for deep conversations then?

originally to buy plants for my cross pollination work, met my wife who also had a love for the same plants, found out doing my cross pollination work here gave results inside 2 years instead of 10 in Australia, we got married and the rest is history. Now have new varieties that have become very popular around the world and we are very happily married

I was strongly considering staying in the Americas myself, until that fluke, spur of the moment holiday to Phuket, in 1999. Returned in 2000 & stayed.

I did little to no research on TH before that. Main concern was actually weather, typhoons and earthquakes, since coming from USA's west coast earthquakes, tornado alley & east coast hurricanes.

Exchange rate $1 / ฿40 was added incentive. Both early visits were Sept onward at Phuket. Had I visited March and not on Phuket, say the Gulf, I would not have returned cheesy

Brutally hot & crappy surf would have changed my mind.

Your story sounds very interesting. I love plants as well and while I don't have a garden here yet, I would love too. What variety of plants do you and your wife propagate?

I actually consider the sun overrated here in Thailand, and much prefer cloudy days when the temperature is considerably cooler.

I first came to Thailand over 20 years ago to do some IT contract work for Bangkok Bank. At that time, I was planning to retire to Brazil. After I finished my work at Bangkok Bank after only a few months, I visited a friend of mine who lived in Koh Samui. While I was there, I liked it so much that I decided to retire there rather than in Brazil.

Soon, I met a Thai woman I liked a lot, got married, and moved up to her family's property in the mountains outside of Phetchabun. There, I had two houses built, one of her mother and father, and one for us, and have lived there ever since.

It was initially a 3 month deal with the company I worked for in my home country.

3 months turned into 12 years.

I made the choice to seek another job in Thailand.

I like the hills and the roads of Phetchabun, and a nice place to live I suppose. Not to far to Bangkok either.

Thailand is not to bad to work if you got the right deal.

Yeah 4 weeks annual leave and ticket home, I do not go home so I grab the cash instead.

Have private insurance as well but it is next to useless.

I was offered to be a quality inspector for manufacturing sport equipment and clothing. All expenses covered within Thailand, Vietnam and China, but I didn't want to risk my visa in Thailand since there where no work permit involved. estimated one week a month 80k, and knowing from before when we had a production In China, what was supposed to be a few days work turned out to be a month or more.

Might get a marriage visa and a work permit, and see if its possible to do some freelance working now Im moving back permanently.

Initially holidays, later business visits, a work posting to Bangkok, and finally retirement in 1993. Now 85 and still very happy to be in Thailand with my Thai wife who I met in 1983.

I came in 2002 for the R&R I had to turn down to return to the field and never got. I told my buddy, VN Vet for ah some "company", "I'll be back at xmas/new years and if I like it as well as now I'll be moving as soon as I can retire". I came for the sex, the booze, the parties, oh those nights at the old FLB. I broke a cardinal rule, never bar fine from your drinking bar.

Married her, unknown she was a gambling addict and now had my money to play with, and lost. Caught out after taking the money for the house and gambling it away and refinancing the paid for truck. Bought, well almost, house in Udon 2008, I was living here by 2010, after only working for 9 months for a couple of years. Soon the marriage went to hell and off I went, after a bit we made another try, but the gambling had her.

I met a 30 yr. Lao lady up in Nong Khai, couldn't get her out of my mind and through ups and downs, bad times and good we are together now. Things have changed, Agent Orange finally got me, and cancer took my voice, left me crippled. I've been back to the states once for an 8 month stay in Minneapolis VA Hospital, the cancer hospital for the VA.

Party days are over, not only have I had a forced change, Pattaya etc. is not the same and never will return to the glory days that I got to enjoy. I've still got my Mustang GT to play with, if I could get the tires needed to keep it in a straight line.

Thailand has changed along with the expats coming now. Some actually don't come for the pussy. Weird...lol. Even with the changes here, I have no desire to return to the dictatorship of Amerika.

Semper Fi.
