So what brought you here — and what's keeping you?

I had been coming to Thailand since 2012, originally with previous wife and kids.

As things started disintegrating at home, I started thinking of having a major life change.

I had been running a successful business for 35 years. Wife, siblings, parents - all died.

I had nothing present emotionally to keep me working in a country that was becoming increasingly annoying ( read that as woke and controlling).

Sold my business, my house, my car collection - everything - a year or two before the Covid debacle - bad timing!

It gave me the freedom to escape, and after 6+ years full-time here - I am happy I made the move.

Thailand feels like my home country (Australia) did in the 70s. There is a sense of freedom here that disappeared decades ago in the West. I live near Kanchanburi - where there seems to be a good balance of civilisation and country lifestyle.

I am happy as a pig in sh#t!

Came 25 years ago for cheap sex, cheap beer and do wtf you want lifestyle. My kids have kept me here, have looked at other options but seriously there ain't a better package than Thailand, so that's why I stay here

Unlike a lot of people, I'll just be honest........sex and cheap alcohol.

Yep, hardly increased in 25 years,. although the quality has gone down quite a bit...just turn the lights of though 😁

Curiosity brought me here. At that time, I was planning on moving to Brazil to retire, but I took the opportunity to visit a friend who was living in Koh Samui, and I liked it so much that I decided to retire here. Since then, I've moved from Koh Samui to up in the jungle-filled mountains near Phetchabun.

What keeps me here is the beauty of where I live, and, of course, the lower cost of living.

Funny, I was just asked that question the other night at a GoGo, while drinking with a lovely lady.

I didn't answer wasn't sure I wanted to answer so she did

" you came here for the pussy and what keeps you here so long is the pussy " I sat there thinking then ordered her another drink.😇

So what brought you here

Finished a contract in Indonesia; a mate of mine was living in BKK and there are Hashes there.

— and what's keeping you?

Palm trees and sunshine and a wife and two dogs

Came here (south-east Asia) 25 years ago for a better climate for my weak lungs (Bronchiectasis).

Still here and my lungs thank me for it.

That's a surprising reason as I wouldn't have rated any countries in SEA as good for those with bronchiectasis. I enjoy living in Thailand but may have to go back to Australia one day because I also suffer from brochiectasis. I monitor my local air pollution levels daily and in Thailand they are almost always in the orange (maybe a few days in the green and a few in the red) but back home in Australia they are in the green almost every day of the year because of the strict compliance on vehicle emissions there and the lack of open burning.

Sorry if that comment is bit off-topic so to respond to the OP's original question: I came to Thailand because (a) I don't like cold weather at any time of the year, (b) I need good health care facilities, and (c) I prefer to live in a country which has a predominantly Buddhist or non-religious culture (so for me Vietnam is the only other country in this part of the world that I would consider living in).

Your story sounds very interesting. I love plants as well and while I don't have a garden here yet, I would love too. What variety of plants do you and your wife propagate?

We grow plumeria/frangipani, had around 5000 trees in Australia, I have grown well over 20,000 seedlings over the years but waiting for 3 flowerings in Australia before they could be recognised made it hard, here 3 flowering under 2 years happens a lot. Currently we have around 1000 trees(including seedlings) but I have been removing some as it is getting harder to manage due to age, many are top named varieties from around the world that we use as pollination stock and many are our own varieties, the most popular one we grew is Golden Noi named after my wife with several others becoming popular/required among enthusiasts.

I came in 2002 for the R&R I had to turn down to return to the field and never got. I told my buddy, VN Vet for ah some "company", "I'll be back at xmas/new years and if I like it as well as now I'll be moving as soon as I can retire". I came for the sex, the booze, the parties, oh those nights at the old FLB. I broke a cardinal rule, never bar fine from your drinking bar.

Married her, unknown she was a gambling addict and now had my money to play with, and lost. Caught out after taking the money for the house and gambling it away and refinancing the paid for truck. Bought, well almost, house in Udon 2008, I was living here by 2010, after only working for 9 months for a couple of years. Soon the marriage went to hell and off I went, after a bit we made another try, but the gambling had her.

I met a 30 yr. Lao lady up in Nong Khai, couldn't get her out of my mind and through ups and downs, bad times and good we are together now. Things have changed, Agent Orange finally got me, and cancer took my voice, left me crippled. I've been back to the states once for an 8 month stay in Minneapolis VA Hospital, the cancer hospital for the VA.

Party days are over, not only have I had a forced change, Pattaya etc. is not the same and never will return to the glory days that I got to enjoy. I've still got my Mustang GT to play with, if I could get the tires needed to keep it in a straight line.

Thailand has changed along with the expats coming now. Some actually don't come for the pussy. Weird...lol. Even with the changes here, I have no desire to return to the dictatorship of Amerika.

Semper Fi.

Excellent post, and wishing you all the best.

Haven't made the move. Thai wife and I were planning to relocate right when COVID hit. Changed everything. Now she has a really good job here in USA and wants to keep working. Maybe 5 more years.

She wanted me to move there in 2013, but I didn't want to give up my good job and thought it would be better for her to emigrate. Now she plans to have a small pension and Social Security and her dual citizenship. Worked out better than planned. Or expected.

Having lived and worked in countries around the world in Eur (5 countries) Africa (2 countries), Central America (1 country) and Asia (7 countries), when retirement came up, i picked what i considered a paradise - Thailand! That was over 20 years ago and my feelings have not changed - life here is still GREAT!

First set foot in Thailand in 1962. Liked it a lot, visited many more times, and worked in Bangkok in the 1980s. In 1983 met the Thai girl who would marry in 1990. Retired to Thailand in 1993. Still very happy to be here with Thai wife, houses in Bangkok and Rayong, and 8 dogs and 8 cats. Now 85, will die here with no reason nor intention to ever leave.

You have a nice Thai woman, which makes all the difference in the world. Just as I am with a good Thai girlfriend now, a world apart from my ex's madness.

Good for you bravo that is a tremendous accomplishment many who just visit have no idea don't get me wrong respectfully but in spite of that accomplishment it doesn't give your opinion your responses a pass from me. Things work both ways even if your are 85, people hit back age has nothing to do with stop learning.

I do wish you will and continue to chat with you until 100 plus?

I came here my 30's, to work offshore Songkhla for Chevron.

I was fed up with travelling back to Australia on my time off, decided shack up with a beautiful young Thai chick, buy a house and call Thailand home.

Similar, but worked in office 5-7 days a week for 3+ years. Not sure why I got married. I didn't really want to, but she was very much in love...
