Having lived and worked in Asia for 13 years, I now realise I have led a sheltered life.

I have never heard the "slope" expression used before and if some sensationalists hadn't written this drivel, I would still have been happily ignorant of it's meaning.

+1, a shitstorm about buggerall by the PC brigade as usual!

PC Brigade/Human rights is why the world is becoming increasingly <deleted>. Time they got in the real world.

Funny you mention this...Micheal Grade, Baron of Great Yarmouth and Ex-Chair of the BBC said of Mary Whitehouse and I quote...

"She was very witty, she was a great debater, she was very courageous and she had a very sincere view, but it was out of touch entirely with the real world"

plus the ludicrous assumptions by dozens that racism against whites is equable to racism against non-whites. Still defending that?

But racism is racism, if your discriminating what is and isnt racist, isn't that racist in itself. ?....can have it both ways dear boy

Okay, now we're getting somewhere. You think any racist act is equal to any other. So, for instance, you believe a Thai charging a farang more for a service is equal to the American government interning Japanese Americans after Pearl Harbour?

Here's where we get to see you actually defend one of your opinions instead of saying "thats your opinion" and washing your hands of it... unless you go off on a tangent, but you wouldnt do that would you...

The word racist doesn't convey seriousness or degree. It is simply a description.

One could say that making gross simplistic generalisations about ethnic groups is racist. It might not be serious and it might be true, but it is still racist.

Racism isn't defined so much by an action as belief

It’s pretty much impossible to argue against racism these days, so if they don’t want to appear utterly out of step the general mores of society most racists have to take a different tack … they argue that they are NOT racists which is naturally enough, is an equally untenable position.

I think it is fairly obvious by some of the replies that it is beginning to dawn on some posters that maybe their views are in fact untenable e and racist, so their next step is to deny; this is accompanied by random insults to the messengers in an attempt to divert from the debate, or the introduction of flippant comments about how this is more racist than that, or how “boring” “long” or “trivial” the thread is. Anything rather than directly address the matter in hand. ….and as their unsupportable arguments increasingly make them look more and more daft they feign disinterest and fade away.

What the he11 is wrong with you people? Look at the 1st post....original post....thread starter....I'll think of it in a minute, don't want to offend anyone....and you can clearly see there is a slope of 3 or 4 %.

Clarkson is British. When I was living in the UK he was always on the telly.

He's always been an offensive brat. And along with many people, I hate him.

And yes, every time his stupid childish programmes appeared on tv, I changed channels.

Horrible nasty man.

I really never liked Clarkson, the first few series of TopGear put me right off of him, but after a few seasons he mellowed out a bit and wasn't too bad.

Still not his biggest fan, and I think he can't drive for toffee, anybody can do a powerslide after a few hours training, he's to too big and fat to be a real fast as fawk driver, how on earth the whippet Hammond doesn't beat him every time I'll never know, or maybe the producers of the show know.

... more and more daft ...

Daft as a brush - a tar brush?

Right, I have never heard of such an expression either.

Living in Asia over 10 years and grew up with many Asians and had Asian GF's in America and I have never heard of this term. Must be a British thing. Stupid comment if it is true. Classic Clarklson though. Been waiting for this episode.

I agree. Must be British as I've never heard of it either.

Great two episodes though - but to be honest I would have rather that the crew stuck to driving entirely within Myanmar perhaps finishing their journey crossing back into Thailand rather than watching most of the second episode about a bridge go up on the Thai side. They called it the Burma special, but spent too much time in ordinary Thailand.

The draw of this episode to me was how they were going to "tackle the Shan". They of course conveniently forgot to mention that the Shan State has not been off-limits to foreigners in it's entirety as they claimed, but rather the road that they drove on. From the map, it appeared to be the Taunggyi-Kengtung road, which is still off-limits without special permission due to security concerns (though this could change soon). Taunggyi is the capital of Shan State and located near Inle Lake, a popular tourist drawcard for years. In the episode you can make out that they passed through Taunggyi. The Tachilek (Thai border) to Kengtung road is a minor artery in eastern Shan State that could turn into a major one if the Burmese government were to finally open up the Chinese border at Mong La as an international crossing, thus allowing freight and passengers to travel from Jinghong in China to Chiang Rai in Thailand more quickly than via Laos as they currently have to.

Driving your own vehicle in Myanmar is a dream to many and it's a pity that the boys didn't present the route and significance of the area they traveled in more detail.

i'm planning to drive in Burma in the is next year or so. So I watched the show to get some idea o=f what it might be like. I certainly didn't realise that the VERY FIRST UK people to be allowed to drive through Burma were going to take such a flippant attitude to the country and i wonder what damage they've done for future visitors.

I expect a lot of government officials will get to watch this show to see how their respective countries are portrayed by the BBC - this isn't going to help future visitors to the country one bit.

Let me tell you that they weren't the first UK people to drive through Burma. Plenty have driven through, particularly in recent months and the last couple of years. Only difference is that the vast majority have been granted permission to drive through more "standard" areas of Myanmar, not the Taunggyi-Kengtung road as the Top Gear team did.

es - I have spoken to those who have driven through on "world" drives etc.

With the coming of ASEAN it is extremely likely that Burma will make it easier for people to enter from Thailand in particular in their own cars. At present there are convoys, escorted drives etc or you have to have a driver.

if the situation changes in the next 12 months it will mean ordinary private motorists will be able to visit the country.

There are quite a few problems with opening up the roads to foreigners and the Burmese junta has been very reluctant to allow access to foreigners, so a program like this is hardly going to encourage them, is it?

if we posted on here every time we heard the word farang the servers would melt down - pot / kettle / black (or white)

For your edification, since the term "farang" is not used to refer to an ethnic group that historically has been

oppressed and victimized, your suggestion is totally ludicrous. It also appears to be a bald-faced attempt to

excuse racist slurs by trying to confuse the issue.

Give it up! It won't work. Most folks can see right through that kind of charade.

Reading or glancing through, really! People? 36 pages over a TV Show? I'm sure if there's a report of sex trafficking or a home invasion with an entire family killed, all you would leave it at, would be two pages. Seems many bored members.

He really is a horrible nasty man, that's why he should run for PM.

Most of his points are fair and true, but no celebrity or peer has the balls to stand up and say it - unlike Jezza. Give the man credit, he punched Piers Morgan ! Any man worthy of that achievement is a hero in my book.

I reckon his sarcasm and wit flies over your head and that's why you didn't like him 'on the telly' when you spent your time in the UK? Learn some humour outside of political correctness big man!

*Point to note:

His apparently "childish" tv shows include the top watched Motoring TV show in the world.
