A few extra baht in the kitty and a few extra arrivals to please the TAT are much more important than the health of the people of Thailand.

A responsible government would have immediately ordered airlines to suspend all flights from China and not just the province concerned because containment, even by the Chinese military, cannot be 100% secure

The answer is, of course, yes they are - far more important than the common population.

Blame needs to fall squarely on the regime (including TAT and BoT).  Western currencies down, so they could fill up on Chinese tourists.  Well, you can see how well that is working.

Of course, they could go back to wooing healthy western tourists--but they'd have to push the Baht down, something they'd rather not tackle.

His original tweet wasn't so eloquently put. Quite the opposite in fact. 

“We can control the situation and are confident in our ability to handle the crisis," Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told reporters. 

This is were most problems start in Thailand.  The speaker being either delusional or a liar (maybe both).  This hubris leads to inaction and intervention when the horse has already left the barn.

Does anyone believe the number of cases China is publishing?  Based on what they have done and planning to do, you can know that the number is massively higher.

 

it it were my show, I would block all flights from China now.  There is of course the profit barrier and the need to get existing tourists back to China. Making decisions that are right for the public health and well being are why this bunch of mischief makers was elected in the first place.  They don’t understand that the power was given to them by voters and that they serve at the pleasure of the voters/public  ... I know that sounds naive when considering Thailand but it’s how a democracy is intended to work (though seldom does).

Not yet. However, the disease can reportedly be spread during the incubation period when no symptoms are present. If this is correct, taking the temperature of arriving Chinese tourists is an unreliable method of testing for the virus and Thailand could be opening the door to trouble.

They have a right to be angry. The government as usual is not proactive in the slightest. They should be shutting down the schools - for a start - this week, but they won't. They should have already shut down all flights from China, but they won't. They should stop using those fingerprint scanners in the airports, or at least have sanitizer available, but they won't. They should be following up on every person who boarded the flights with people who were infected for up to 14 days, but I am fairly certain they won't have done that.

Too little too late. The number of cases in the coming weeks in Bangkok and other parts of Thailand will be a massive drain on the economy.

Go explain this to the Thai authorities while you are a farang;
they will laugh at you; a farang does not understand Thailand ..

Right, the incubation can go up to 14 days without any sign of anything, so no fever, no nausea, nothing,

Taking the temperature of arrivals is the same as cutting soft butter with string or putting a plaster on a wooden leg.
it is useless at all.

So far in Thailand nobody has died from the coronavurus. Yesterday in Thailand around 40 people were killed on the roads. Why aren't "the public" angry about the governments handling of that situation.

The aim of the masks is to help prevent droplet infection from coughing/sneezing.  If everyone wears one (infected and uninfected people) it will help reduce the spread (which is why China has made them compulsory in Wuhan).  But you also need to wash hands after removing your mask, and wear a new one each day.  

 

The aim of all the public health measures is to reduce the Ro (average number of cases passed on per person) to less than 1.0 - as then the epidemic will end. 

We CAN control the Virus - Thai Officials say.  The same way we

CAN control Burning, Traffic deaths, Corruption.

There is human to human transmission, due to research of a german virology institute.

The thai government better listen to those who have a glue of an idea!

I think the real number of infected people in China is closer to 100,000 rather than the official count of 2,000, based on the fact that it has now a worldwide spread in such a short time.

Thailand traded stable long term farang expats for chinamen at 1 to 100. Less revenue from the Han clones on vacation than what some clean law abiding white European guy would be spending. 

I admit that I'm a complete amateur when it comes to epidemiology but it appears that we know far better than our respective government's and I'm <deleted> off about my own (British) government's reaction to this too, so it is not just Thailand's. In my opinion, the first thing you should do when you're aware of a virus as dangerous as this is to close down all possible avenues in which that virus could spread and lessen the possible harm to your own people. That includes air travel. It is simply unbelievable that air travel from China is still allowed. Lay on flights to get your own people out of there by all means, but those returning must be kept isolated for approximately 15 days.

It is much worse in China that they say. I get really worrying messages and they put cities in lockdown - nobody in or out. It has already spread and out of hand. Let's see if China goes into full panic mode and people start fighting over food. Then it's really bad. They already sell second hand masks other nasty stuff... Wuhan really screwed up this one and they learned nothing from SARS. Saving face again and it backfired really really bad.

Here in Laos, all international airports have turned on their health scanning machines after a few years rest, but what has been raised by many local people is the fact that a tremendous amount of Chinese drive down to the old City of Luang Prabang and beyond to Vientiane, plus there are the thousands of workers who work on Hydro Power Projects that go back and forth by bus and car .... apparently, there is no scanning at any of the northern border crossings .... ????
