A policeman was saved from death by two members of the public after he drove his Ford Escape into a lamppost on Sukhumvit Road in central Pattaya at 2 am this morning.

Chartchai, 52, grabbed a fire extinguisher to put out flames and was aided by Jarinan, 26, in dragging out the driver before the flames took hold again.

The driver was taken to hospital with a head wound covered in blood, reported Siam Chon News who said that he was a Chonburi drugs' suppression officer.

Chartchai said that the policeman had been driving at high speed.

Pattaya police are investigating.

Policeman or not, did they get out the breath bag?

No probably not, as he is a policeman.

Noticed the charred remains this morning, barely a dent on the light post so I suspect dodgy gas install rather than the claim high speed.

One very lucky copper. Pulling someone from a  burning vehicle take a great deal of courage, so hats off to the two involved here. Be interesting to hear why he was traveling so quickly at that time of night.

barely a dent on the light post... in this instance high speed = going too fast to negotiate the turn rather than blasting down the road at 11ty million miles an hour.

Maybe he had just attended a drug bust and was sampling the goods (for purity) on the way back to Soi 9.

Was he on duty? Or why would he be allowed to drive at 2 AM?

Which brings to the rhetorical question, How many bottles of Hong Thong does it take to hit a lamppost? lol

Probably he WAS on high speed. ????

Obviously steering failure. I can see a new trend starting here in Thailand.

Good to see things are getting back to normal in Thailand. Thought there was a curfew in place or isitjust another law not adhered to by certain members of the Thai population

Yeah brakes is a bit stale or falling asleep behind the wheel getting abit stale also So give the steering failure a run for a while. Of coarse we know Thais are great drivers so it cant be anything else can it?

Looks like a classic case of accelerator got stuck combined with break failure to me ????

No case of micro-sleep at all? ????

He should have been able to take on traffic control duties once his sorry butt was saved from the wreckage.

A flaming post has been removed. ????
