A dreadful experience at one of my favorite Pubs.

Featured Replies

This thread is not about the 50 THB, but about being ripped off and then being unvoluntarily dragged into a nasty conversation with the pub-owner.

I fully understand OP's reaction, and personally would never go back as long as that obnoxious lady-manager is still there.  And even with new ownership my perception of the place would be different than it was before because of that experience.

Unfortunately the 'libel' laws in Thailand do not allow to Name & Shame the place because even when fully right you can be prosecuted by the owner for 'hurting their business'.

    "A dreadful experience"....   ...it gets worse ........   .....u lost 4-0!   ????

  • I think I'd reserve the word dreadful for something substantially more than quibbling over the price of 2 beers or 50 baht.... You got lucky on an opening night special, or mistake....Now you've

Surprised they didn't say you were undercharged the first day and ask for another 50bht to make up for it.   My local beer shop charges 50bht for a large U-beer, and they're making a profit

And you did not at any point in this long discussion with the manageress point that out? I smell bullshot.

what is your point, uncle ?

The point is that you are ending the OP of the thread with that it´s advertised price of happy hour 2 for one at 140.

Simple question. Where was the sign? I can answer that. It did only exist in your fantasy.

You also point out, that it´s not for the 50 baht. If not, why do you even start a conversation and take it as far as to the manager? I mean, that was before you had a bad attitude, right?

As a final point. Somebody might have been given you the wrong price the first day, as well as the price went up from one day to another. Anyway, you know there was no sign and you also know that they are free to change the price. Maybe as simple as they tried with 140 the first day, but saw that it was not enough to cover expenses.

Just say like it is. It was all for the 50 baht and for your own amusement of getting to complain over how things are done in Thailand again.

Must be really sad to never fit in.

It ain't just the beer/price,it just about anything and everything re. Thailand...liars from the toenails up

It's about customer service, something that lacks in Thailand, after the bar closures you would think that they would try to make people happy and not treat them like <deleted>. It's about thai attitude.

Its not about 50 baht.

its about losing a customer in bad times.

Go next door, order a beer and give her a smile.

<deleted> like this never happens in the west.

A manager would never tell anyone to find another place to drink.

If Everton were playing down the bottom of my garden, I'd draw the curtains." Bill Shankly.

Bill Shankly was barred from Mellwood after he finished working for the red *hite, and i am told

he did go to Bellefeild so why do you post something that is nonsense, and as they say ''if you know your history''

it appears you do not know yours.....oh by the way Mellwood was l.pools training ground and Bellefield  was EFC

Bill Shankly was always more than a great football manager. ... Harder still was that Liverpool became an even more formidable force, and later banned him from their training ground at Melwood, where the newly retired Shankly had tried to rediscover some of the camaraderie that once filled his life.Oct 17, 2009 OBSERVER

the thread is about not much at all, just about someone who got up and feels grumpy.   Its hardly a National emergency.

Yeah, I too have experienced such obnoxious behaviour by a jobsworth diva, who I'd never employ if I was managing a service business. Trouble is, these Thais have no concept on how to treat customers - they'd be better placed as prison warders.

However, we are living here and we should just shrug and move on. Find an alternative venue where friendlier hosts actually treat you as you would expect - especially being a Liverpudlian, now the centre of the footie universe...

The lady manager must have had some cause to react the way she did, but we only get one side of the story.

Newbie? Remember where you are.

Want "back home" responsibility, go home. Want to stay in LOS, suck it up and get on with enjoying LOS.

No surprise the OP has no mates and is bored of life.

Favourite bar you would think you may be at least recognised and know the ropes.Seems none of your mates or other patrons there either. Could it be that 2 for 1 was a non happy hour special!  Or happy hour was tomorrow?????

Firstly It IS all about the 50 baht

if there was no discrepancy in price, ie the 50 baht
then this is a non issue

if it was not about the 50 baht, the OP would have just paid
and thought to himself
*i am pretty sure it was 50 baht cheaper yesterday, oh well never mind it is only 50 baht and every business needs a little extra help during these ridiculous times*

instead he called the manager for a confrontation over 50 baht
then he got offended the manager stood her ground.

personally, during these ridiculous times,
i am avoiding large corps and using only smaller businesses
and i am tipping heavily, as every small biz and its staff will need help to get through the current BS

These are not the time to start moaning about saving pennies
if you want to see those businesses you enjoy survive.

Mug!

They care nothing for you or your custom, no matter how much you spend or how often you go.

If you get a bit too drunk to keep count, they'll still pad your bill.

Pay when they bring the drink .... then if you don't like the price, you can walk away.

did read my post properly?

You had my sympathy on reading your initial report...on reading your replies to other questions/comments from other BM,s I conclude the bar is well shut of your custom

it's about being possibly scammed, disrespected, and treated like an idiot.

when i buy fruit and the lady says 60 baht, i immediately ask myself, "what if i was Thai?  if i come back over and over, will it get cheaper?"

when it goes from 140 to 190, you feel as though they are treating you as an outsider, farang, loser, dirty person, worthless idiot, moron, etc....

it's 90% all in our heads.......but he asked for a manager, which I wouldn't do over 50 baht

in about 5 years, i've been scammed for about a few thousand baht and given discounts, deals, free stuff, whatever....of about 50,000 baht.  last month i got great deals.  store owner shoes me his book and i pay what he pays....but we are good friends now.  his book shoes his price and what he should sell it at.  anyhow..

one day this guy will just say, OK, who cares.....and life will go on.

advice:  budget about 500 a month over "strange" prices.  make mental notes.  you will be surprised it's lower than you think and your stress will go down.

Can't remember how many times we've been told on TVF to pay after each drink is bought. Only newbies and perhaps drunk people run up a load of chek bin before paying.

and? We, IMO, ARE an outsider, farang, loser, dirty person, worthless idiot, moron, etc.... to them.

Secret to lovin' LOS is to accept it and still enjoy it without fooling ourselves that they care about us.

58 posts about 50 THB in a bar - the problems we are facing these days as farangs living in Thailand are completely crushing the mood for me.........I am planning on leaving!

It would certainly help if you named the bar.

Since libel and slander are regarded as criminal matters here in LOS, the bar could have taken legal action against him which might have resulted in him being banged up in the Bangkok Hilton (or local equivalent) for an exceedingly long stretch, had he done as you suggested.

I will leave it to others to judge whether he would have deserved such a fate!
