Over 90% of Thai people want a total ban on foreign arrivals

I don't think foreigners already here really fall into the arrivals part of the OP.

No, but they may fall under the "working here, for example intourism"- part!

94.45% are most concerned about losing their jobs,   Obviously, not many of the massive number of 1,459 people questioned in the poll, were from the millions who have, rather sadly, already

  • Can’t expect anything else when they are getting totally brainwashed on a daily basis. Even some of the foreigners who are living In Thailand are spouting the same scaremongering nonsense.

  • Looks terribly stupid. Looks like brainwashing and fear works beyond expectation. But 5% thinking brains is probably the common world percentage.

Can't say I know a lot about Thai poles but unless the polling of people is done randomly over the entire country, city and rural,  the result isn't worth Jack shiet.  And as I learnt during my time of higher education public polls,  graphs and charts can be less reliable or totally inaccurate depending on what is given as input.

In Pattaya 5 tourbuses Chinese (they look like Chinese?!) with accompanying the police at Beach Rd are visiting last week.

What does that even mean other than working here equates to already here, not arriving.

Meanwhile, a second poll (so far unreleased) allegedly shows that these very same "over 90% of respondents" simply shrug off that the country clocks up about 70 traffic accident deaths every single day.

And those very same "over 90% of respondents" probably also are not one bit concerned that the country has registered over 30,000 dengue fever infections since January, with around 800 deaths so far (as opposed to Covid's 58).

But hey, as long as you can rap on about those bad, bad foreigners and that bad, bad virus they're bringing in, everything's just swell, right? Because it makes you feel safer in that little bubble your xenophobic government has successfully created for you.

One also wonders if these "over 90% of respondents" are actually aware that 99+% of all imported Covid cases were actually THAI people returning home from abroad.

Now... I am not at all saying the country should open up to mass arrivals of foreigners anytime soon. But if overseas Thai people are allowed to come back although some of them turn out to be infected, so should foreigners who have family, business interests or legal residency status here -- as long as ALL of them (Thai and foreigner alike) are subjected to the SAME quarantine and testing measures.

If an Egyptian soldier flaunts the quarantine rules because the GOVERNMENT obviously failed to enforce the measure, I'd honestly rather see "more than 90% of respondents" pointing an accusing finger at the authorities for that shortcoming.

Gen. Prayuth has already publicly apologized for that mistake, so I'd respectfully suggest to those "more than 90% of respondents" to GET OVER IT and turn their attention to more pressing matters. Like insisting the government introduce proper driver training and enforce traffic laws so neighbors, relatives, sons and daughters might be saved from being crushed to a pulp during the next "brake failure" incident, for example. Or how about eradicating standing water sources in your messy backyards to deprive dengue fever-spreading mosquitoes of their breeding grounds?

Alrighty, everyone begin packing, get out, and never come back you all are NOT wanted here in Thailand.  It's over, go find another place.

Exactly what I did. I sensed this coming earlier this year so, with no Thai "ties", I packed my bags, sold my car and flew from Khon Kaen to Siem Reap with Air Asia on a one-way "Fly-Thru" ticket and now enjoy retirement without any hassle in Cambodia. Sadly "two fingers" to those anti-farang Thai people!

Then head to Canada. Oh, wait, 86% of the people there want the Canada/US border shut indefinitely, and international travel is still banned. Guess what, Thai people don't want Covid here, and are willing to take the hit on tourism so that the rest of the 83% of the economy is not impacted. It's not all about you - get over yourself.

...you did read the part, where 90+% didn't want to loose their job, right?!

With millions working in tourism and tourism related - or dependend fields...that will be hard to bring together!

Get over yourself!

I really like to know who they are questioned in this poll.

Clerks?, Hi-so people? People from the street in Nong Kai?

I don't believe they ask people in Pattaya, Phuket, or Hua-Hin.

If this is true, it's a crappy poll.

Maybe it’s gonna take a while to sink in the severity of the situation the country is heading for before they begin to wise up.

Thaiand can not survive on its own.

That's the problem with Thailand, the people who lives here are still thinking the whole world is turning around them.

Another hermit state in the making. Next year we could see beauty clinic owners copying bomb the Great Western Satan North Korea style news when this continues.

Hmmm.

Actually the reason we not want foreigner NOW is because of foreigner with covid.

Thailand win covid. Because we listen to medical doctor.

Some foreign countrys eg if you not “lefty” you will refuse wear a mask.

You fight about statues. Black and white.

Covid is not politics. Is medical.

Six month ago thai people wear mask, social distance, stay home, close the pubs etc etc etc etc etc etc etc.

Now, July, UK, USA Australia think masks is good idea. How stupid! Really.

Because your fighting about wear mask etc etc covid situation now is terrible in the world. Thai not have local infection more than one month already= only way get covid is if foreigner bring it.

Other countrys ban foreigner same. Sensible. Thailand start relax, live again. But the Eygyt one show can change terrible quickly.

WHEN you control covid be welcome back to Thailand.

Sure.

Many thai anger now some countrys so selfish make problem worse.

What are you doing????

Thailand covid improve.

In world Covid is unimprove.

If we allow foreigner come with covid

1) the economy close again

2) we die

no thankyou.

Okay, Yoda...we understand, you eat up the Thai- propaganda hook, line and sinker!

What did the Egyptian- case show?

That your own government agencies are too dumb to enforce even the simplest form of caution!

And you believe, they have a virus under control, in a land with 60+ Million people!

Amazing!

The Covid - numbers are going down, world wide, with some hotspots of very stupid governments remaining!

(looking at you USA, Brazile et all)

You are probably rich enough to survive without tourists- millions of your fellow citizens are not!

And instead of preparing sensible measures for a however occuring outbreak, you and your government are screaming bloody murder from the rooftops!

By the way: didn't you defend every single Chinese- tourist, coming to Thailand?

How did that work out for you?

Very sad indeed.

I suggest that you read about JOSEPH GOEBBELS, a google search will find out about Him.

Intereisting reading, no care for the people,

Same is happenning in Thailand.

Goebbels was in power for 2 days after Hitler committed suicide.

Goebbells then committed suicide along with his wife, and just prior murdered all his children,

ALL TO SAVE FACE!!!!

The economy is in dire straits. It is worse than most realize. People are out of jobs, living from hand to mouth and etc. It will take a few more months until the truth catches up with those still in denial.

But you see people on here writing health before economy what am I missing here. So with a sound economy diversified (tourism). Doesnt that help in the economic well being for a country and its people. The CV numbers BS doesnt hold weight any longer! Its govt using cv as a tool to control its people.

all you  whiners go do your own  poll?  what  data are you using to say it was all uni students answering the poll?  this shows your ignorance.   Thai universities may not be world class but I think they know how to get a fair representation of the average  Thai.  My GF says its safe to not let foreigners in.  Yinn nailed it on the head.

One problem is that so many foreigners in Thailand only know Thais who associate with - you could also say "benefit from" - foreigners. Think bar and restaurant staff, Thais who work in businesses with a large foreign customer base, the Thai family of women who have a farang boyfriend / husband etc. These Thai people all have a reason for saying they want foreigners to be able to enter Thailand. Ask them about foreigners and they welcome us. But how representative are they of all Thais?

Talk with Thais who don't have anything to do with foreigners, don't live near large numbers of foreigners, don't work with foreigners, don't have foreigners in the extended family and it's a different story. These Thai people aren't anti-foreigner per se, they just don't want foreigners visiting Thailand at this time.

It's little different to how things are currently here in New Zealand. The vast majority of New Zealanders don't want foreigners to visit, and at this time only New Zealanders, permanent residents and the foreign partners / family of New Zealanders can enter the country. It's not that we don't like foreigners. We just don't want people visiting until the danger of coronavirus being reintroduced to our country has passed.

Is 0.002% of the population statistically significant?

Fixed your sensationalism for you ????

Over 90% of the 0,000000208% of Thai people polled wanted a total ban on foreign arrivals.

There you go. Fine tuned it for you to add even more dramatic effect and perspective.????

Very occasionally, I do believe that it might not be all bad that 90% of Thais don't have any say whatsoever.

Been reading these stupid polls that are posted on TV for over 15 years here,. Usually its a low and pointless number from a particular demographic classic was 1200, usually Dusit or some military academy.

Basically these polls are ALL just propaganda BS for whatever narrative they junta or gov wishes to peddle..... frankly its pathetic but hey ho its Thai tradition.

I've written for nearly every UK national paper, and the 'red tops' had a policy to publish an outrageous story (not by me) to sell papers, only to then publish a denial from someone the next day. If it wasn't libellous then it worked well.

Hi Barry, an interesting revelation. But how could the false story be deemed not to be libellous ? Or were the papers relying on the fact that it's quite difficult for the individual to prove it damaged his/her reputation if the report was so wild ?

Wasn't necessarily about a person. Could be about an event etc.

Most Thais do not care about the incomes of prostitutes or their families mate, sad as it is to say.

Most Thais regard Thailand's reputation, the girls that work in the industry, and those foreigners that visit for it a national embarrassment.

Interesting you should say that!

I work in the tourism industry, I am not a prostitute and I am in danger of loosing my job pretty soon!

Also my girlfriend is working in the tourism industry and sheis also not a prostitute!

As aren't many of our friends, who work in the tourism industry!

And many of the people I know (most of them Thais) absolutely pitty EVERYBODY, including the prostitutes, who lost their job and are now facing super - hard times!

Thai’s are not this stupid. One has to wonder how ‘loaded’ the questions in the poll were...

i.e. Should we allow foreigners in from countries with high covid numbers?

or should we allow the risk of foreigners bring in covid? etc

exactly.  Framing of the question is always the most relevant part of a poll and the questions are raarely reported on or even published in articles such as these.   If there is a risk of a second wave of Covid 19 being brought in by foreigners, should we allow foreigners to enter?  Yes/no/don't know.

You can be sure that the questions were crafted to generate a “news” story that aligns with the government narrative

All the factories around here have not stopped. Even my step-daughter, employed by CP group, has only had the usual Sunday and public holidays off work and I'm sure many other companies are operating in a similar fashion.. Companies have thrived here since the 1990's through industrialization. Do not assume that we foreigners are needed to sustain life and limb here.

Oh and these factories will not stop!

Soon they can hire and fire as they please, pick from millions of jobless, never ever pay a minimum wage again...the Thai- hiso's wet dream!

Obviously the poll was biased as there must be at least 15% unemployment in Thailand. The figures put out by the Government are nonsense. The 95% fearing losing their job is well in excess of those who have actually lost their job and probably their mobile phone too. Who were the people in the sample and what questions were they asked?

By keep polarizing the people, I don't know how Thais will receive "after" Corona arriving foreigners. They will hate us even more than before??? Or will they be happy to see us bringing back their jobs??? I just don't know

We have all seen the dire predictions of job losses and yet the most recent data shows; (Source - Trading Economics);

The unemployment rate in Thailand came in at 1% in March of 2020, the same as in the corresponding month the previous year. The number of unemployed increased by 45.3 thousand from the prior year.

You are obviously not familiar, with the Thai- policy of hardly letting people go, unless you really have to!

Just wait until the end of the month!

If the number stands at 45.000, still!

Ah, ha!  I've just figured it out.  The title of the article was written by the one and only Mr. Anutin because foreigners offended him by not taking his generosity of masks.
