Pattaya: Mayor Sontaya expects tourists to come in droves for long weekend

8pm.jpg

Thai media 77kaoded reported that Pattaya'a mayor Sontaya Khunpluem expects a huge influx of tourists for the long holiday weekend from Saturday to Tuesday.

"We are ready and we are expecting many visitors," said the upbeat mayor who said that he was pulling out all the stops to ensure the safety and convenience of visitors.

"We're near," he said (presumably referring to the resort's proximity to Bangkok where most of the tourists are likely to emanate from).

"Our guard has not fallen". Everyone will be wearing masks, handing out alcohol gel sanitizer and socially distancing, he noted.

Top of the mayor's "to do list" has been mobilizing his workers to work with the police on traffic jams and instructing his water pump staff to get their act together if it rains.

The mayor may have his work cut out to attract tourists at this time.

Elsewhere in the Thai media it has been suggested that hotel bookings have been sluggish for the long weekend, notes Thaivisa.

Is it a dry weekend ( re. alcohol sales) ?

Someone suggested it would be.

True or not?

getting through a door with a giant Pattaya sign sticking out of his ear .?

If hotel bookings are sluggish and it turns out that large numbers of tourists don't visit, then there could be a move to fill the void with foreign tourists. This will require careful planning but more businesses are suffering the longer this crisis continues. I expect the large hotel chains and mall operators to lead the calls to Government for relaxations on restrictions to foreign tourists.

Think the hordes may well end up the low spending 3 finger protesting kind in many areas this weekend ????

Ha Ha .

I think the last long weekend at least half of Bangkok  turned up to drive around Pattaya, Jomtien and Sattahip.

Looking at the weather forecast there will be a lot of pumping going on in Pattaya this weekend.

It was tongue in check, not literal. I thought that would be a giver. Obviously not!  ????

And then he woke up realising it was a dream

I am afraid the mayor is confused and mix ''tourists'' and ''visitors''

The visitors from Bangkok start in the morning, drive their car to Pattaya

eat and drink on the beach with food and beverage they take with

them from Bangkok, and are back in the big city in the end of the

afternoon, usualy leaving a lot of rubbish behind them on the sand and in the sea.

It's better than nothing and it's the illusion of some life in the city every week end

but i don't see a lot of them being tourists, and helping in anyway the hotels

bars and restaurants in the area, dying slowly for the ones still open

Plus it's the raining season. so you can expect some big rains in the afternoon

like in the last days, and it should be one more nail in the couffin

Monday News:

The Mayor was correctly foretelling the truth: two tourists arrived on the weekend, and they drove to Pattaya.

Not Thailand by a long shot, these drivers are driving on the right side of the road, plus they appear far too organized ????

I'm afraid Kingofthemountain is confused about the definition of what's a tourist.

tour·ist
/ˈto͝orəst/

noun
noun: tourist; plural noun: tourists
  1. 1.
a person who is traveling or visiting a place for pleasure.

Can you just where a snorkel instead of the mask , sort of kill 2 birds with one stone.

Look its obviously not a Thailand photo...there are no  motorbikes, mobile food carts, spaghetti wiring or mangy soi dogs.

""Our guard has not fallen". Everyone will be wearing masks, handing out alcohol gel sanitizer and socially distancing, he noted."

Not reality based. I just got back from beach walk (Jomtien). My informal count: around 200-300 person sample, 3 vendors had masks on.

Masks around chins or below nose in various convenience stores.

Some one on the ground will have to do an after action report to let us know how it was...
