England to require earlier 10 p.m. closing time for pubs, eateries after virus spike

LONDON (Reuters) - All pubs, bars, restaurants and other hospitality venues across the whole of England must start closing at 10 p.m. from Thursday as Prime Minister Boris Johnson tackles a second wave of COVID-19 infections.

 

Johnson, who will address both parliament and the nation on Tuesday, will also say the hospitality sector will be restricted by law to table service only, according to excerpts of his remarks provided by his Downing Street office on Monday.

 

“No one underestimates the challenges the new measures will pose to many individuals and businesses. We know this won’t be easy, but we must take further action to control the resurgence in cases of the virus and protect the NHS," he will say.

 

Shares in Britain's listed pubs and restaurant groups fell sharply on Monday in anticipation of the move. While there is no consistent policy for the country, the move will advance the closing time by at least an hour for most areas.

 

Britain will face an exponentially growing death rate from COVID-19 within weeks unless urgent action is taken to halt a rapidly spreading second wave of the outbreak, the country's senior medics warned on Monday.

 

The COVID-19 alert level has also moved from Level 3 to Level 4 after the data showed the number of cases was rising rapidly. Level 4 indicates that the virus is in general circulation and transmission is high or rising exponentially.

 

The new rules represent another backwards step in Britain's recovery from a pandemic that has inflicted more deaths and more economic damage on the country than on European peers and has prompted widespread criticism of Johnson's leadership.

 

On Monday, Northern Ireland said it would extend existing restrictions in some localities on households mixing indoors across the whole of the province from Tuesday, while Wales slapped curbs on four more areas. Scotland said additional restrictions were almost certain to be imposed.

 

Johnson will address the nation at 1900 GMT on further ways he will confront the virus.

Can someone please explain the logic behind this closing at 10 pm? If all indicators are pointing towards this second wave then shutting bars/restaurants a couple of hours early won't do much. Just means the punters go home a bit early and spread it within their households.

 

As Tarteso stated earlier, what is the magical power with 22:00; what difference happens 5 minutes before to 5 minutes after?

Not a sensible move. This just means the pubs will be absolutely packed from 6pm until 10pm during which time people will drink as much as possible as quickly as possible, then at 10pm everyone is well tanked up and thrown out onto the streets at the same time.

 

What could possibly go wrong?

On the other hand I see a possible U-turn coming up shortly, pubs to open only after 10.00 pm

That's the thing about objective thinking. You can support a person's decision on one issue while criticizing the same person's decision on another issue. It's not really that difficult if you keep an open mind and look at the decision itself, rather than the person taking it.

 

It's only when people become so entrenched in one viewpoint (or hatred of a particular individual) that they cease to be objective. There are quite a few like this on the forum. Some even go as far as to abandon their democratic principles and support overturning referendum results (or re-running referendums until they win) simply because they cannot accept the Democratic result. Others believe that anyone with a different opinion to their own must be stupid, racist, bigoted, fascistic etc. It's a very dangerous mindset and not really suited to the 21st century.

 

I wouldn't dream of naming names of course but suffice to say many are ardent Scottish nationalists ????.

 No proper closure of borders.
+ only just recently  enforced people to wear masked inside shops and other public spaces.
+ people outside socializing and partying like normal
+ anti mask & BLM  protests/ riots. 
= Covid spreading like wildfire.

What was that? Invite hundreds of thousands of Chinese into the UK in Nov and Dec so that they outbreak in the UK was much earlier and only noted as an increase in viral pneumonia cases?

When it comes to running countries and economies scientists are the last ones youd want involved, UK is stupidly putting faith in models that are themselves predictions based on assumptions not data and as the data grows its clear the model being used was always flawed and they wont admit they were wrong before and wrong now.. Chief health advisor and science officer are working on a  model based on what ifs and could bes in the face of growing contradictory data, and they are still running with we all gonna die mantra... which as they dont live in the economic or real business world is a disaster for the rest of us who depend on a working economy. These twits are trying to save face as more will end up dying from cancelled tests, doctors visits and minor ops and all manner of catch it early and deal with it better policy we have had for years.. thats now all out the window thanks to these model mad scientists.. 

 

This obsession for testing is polarising everything.. the lock down model and policy is quite obviously wrong and has been since it wont stop a virus from spreading, it was about flattening the curve to begin with.. well its flatlined completely, at some point its become all about cases and obsessing over that.. 

 

The more they test the more they will find cases, especially as the tests pick up ANY Corona or Rhino debris, old or current and flag it as positive. Bingo you have cv19 and must stay home, despite getting flagged most never even get symptoms. Over the past 2 weeks so far 5 people we know that got tested came up positive so have had to isolate, interestingly not one got sick nor showed any symptoms so we did a bit of cross referencing, approx 25 other family members had to stay home as a result and we think around another 50 or so should have through interactions but thats really just speculation and based on facebook posts etc..guess what ? no one so far has actually reported being sick of feeling sick... so far anyway, I find that very telling.. Either the test is not that accurate or the virus is not that contagious or has deteriorated to the point of its no longer a dangerous virus for society, only the very few and infirm, just as the cold or influenza can be and other diseases we can transmit on to others. 

 

More and more are being flagged positive with zero symptoms as the testing ramps up..being asymptomatic AND contagious is really rare and there is mountains of data for most contagions we have to deal with to back that up which means people almost certainly arnt contagious and the whole approach is one big fail. Even the CDC i believe just walked back the claim it can be airborne.... 

 

Ahh well despite the claims of London is rife im still going into London every day not wearing a nosebag, wont go to these places that demand personal details, wont have track and trace apps on the phone and will not be volunteering for any test. If I get sick this year i will bet it will be from a cold if its CV19 np ill deal with it then  and get on with life as much as these expert plonkers allow us to.

Gove was asked today that very question.  His response was that there is evidence that it does make a difference but there are going to be further measures to come.  When he was pressed with what evidence there was, as the restrictions were not put in place yet, he just floundered and repeated that there were more restrictions to come.

 

They are completely clueless with their stupid knee jerk responses followed shortly afterwards with the inevitable U-turns.
