BANGKOK (NNT) - Prime Minister and Defense Minister, Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, has ordered the setting up of a committee to track down and punish people who run gambling dens throughout the country. The Prime Minister has instructed officials to take strict measures to prevent people from sneaking out to gamble in neighboring countries.

Gen. Prayut said that eradicating gambling dens that exist both here and abroad, is required. Officials and the public have to work together to eliminate all sources of infection.

A panel has been set up to prosecute all those involved in running gambling dens and others who have been accused of negligence. He warned against people crossing the Thai border to gamble in neighboring countries.

Border checkpoints must remain stringent. He also urged people who have visited gambling dens to undergo a health screening process, saying they will not be penalized.

The Commissioner-General of the Royal Thai Police, Pol. Gen. Suwat Jangyodsuk, said today the police have information about gambling dens in many areas, and officers have been deployed to these locations.

However, the evidence is not yet sufficient to prosecute the offenders, who often claimed that some politicians or influential figures have a vested interest in their operations.

Once the evidence is sufficient, the authorities will take action. If officers are found to be involved, they and their superiors will face disciplinary action. Previously, a disciplinary order was sent to police chiefs in many provinces, but the problem still persists. If found guilty, they will be transferred from their current posts permanently.

Commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, Pol. Lt. Gen. Sompong Chingduang, has insisted that all sides, including the military, police and local administrators, are working together and doing their best to prevent illegal migrants from slipping in via natural routes.

However, the task is challenging because the border area is over 5,000 kilometers long and smugglers work through networking. Officials are not being careless when performing their duties, and are open to criticisms, but need to make improvements.

He means travel legitimately to engage in an activity that is legal in that jurisdiction. Unless they are taking the dodgy ferry across the river.

People are apparently the only source (with no proven origin) so I guess he's saying that all people should be eliminated both here and abroad?

there goes all the extra pocket money for the big boys in the force if they shut them all down but with the police investigating themselves many of them some will not be stopped, really have to wonder if prawit has some link to them seeing he is denying their existence, have to be suss why is he trying to cover them up. As in the past these gambling dens are only found when the police are left out of it and the army goes after them so that they are not tipped off, we shall see what happens if anything

The Chinese will not be happy with this one ..........LOL

That's interesting.

Why do you say Chinese?

Edit: After reading the post a little closer. I understand what you mean.

I thought you meant that the illegal dens were owned by Chinese (which I think is the case in a suspicious place near us)

And there it is lol.

Only time we see police in our village is when they are doing their pick-ups.  And you want these same police to probe themselves??

Nice announcement Mr PM but every body knows the truth.  By the way, anybody got the correct time lol!

The left hand doesn't even know there is a right hand.

Same thing exactly happened over allegations of border guard corruption.  Prawit says no graft on the borders and next day Prayut orders a probe??  Maybe they dont believe each other.....just like everybody else.
