Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has congratulated Joe Biden on becoming the 46th president of the United States, noting that his victory with the biggest vote in US election history was “a reflection of the trust, confidence, and hope that the American people have placed upon you”.

In Thursday’s letter of congratulation on behalf of the Thai people and government, Prayut noted that Thailand was the United States’ oldest treaty partner in Asia, with ties of friendship dating back over two centuries and a strategic partnership that “has progressed through thick and thin”.

The alliance had brought mutual benefit not just to the two countries but also to security, stability and prosperity in the region, said the letter.

It added that the world must heed Biden’s words, “to heal, we must remember”, as a prescription for the “divisiveness, conflict and devastation” that had been amplified by Covid-19.

“If the pandemic has taught us anything, it is that as the world is going through a historic change, the most important thing is for us to turn towards each other, not against one another, and collaborate.”

Prayut said Thailand would walk side by side with the United States on this journey.

He signed off by saying he was looking forward to working closely with Biden’s administration, before extending an invitation to the president and the First Lady to visit Bangkok.

If only Prayut truly believed what he wrote and acted on it in his own country..."To heal we must remember".  Remember how you stole the country, installed yourself, and have usurped power and money meant for the citizens......I am sure you remember each baht you have pilfered from your starving and unemployed nation....

Wow! I guess that Mr Biden is really happy to receive such a welcoming message from a deadbeat coup leader. But then again he is actually an informed and intelligent person who will most probably stick this missive exactly where it it belongs.

Indeed.

Global Unity [whatever that is].

Biden: "Oh, a congratulation from a guy who leads a country where an old lady goes to prison for 46 years for sharing some audio files - how nice."

don't the policies and what not that biden stands for stand in direct contradiction with some of the things that have happened here ?

joe i'm looking for you to call a spade a spade here my man.

I don't see how it is in the USA's interest at this time whoever is president to get involved in the internal politics of Thailand. Especially considering the historic triple play of internal crises in the USA -- the pandemic, the economy, and right wing domestic terrorism.

I'm sure the congratulatory letter from Thailand's PM is appreciated. Both countries probably care about trade policies between them more than anything.

Thailand isn't like a democratic western ally where the traditional strong bonds were trashed by the exited disgraced president. Those are the foreign relations priorities for President Biden -- to repair the damage with traditional strong democratic allies. Even that won't be easy as those allies correctly will understand that a country that so quickly slipped into anti-democratic authoritarianism could revert back to that horror in the next election. It turns out based on the Mr. trump era that America wasn't what the world thought it was, indeed it wasn't what most Americans thought it was (as Mr. trump never enjoyed majority support even among Americans).

On a related note, do you think President Biden will replace the current U.S. ambassador who was a pure POLITICAL appointment, not a career diplomat?

A little bit of brown nose here by our PM, hopefully a fat lot of good that will be...

I guess Biden's response was, 'Who' ?

No way did he compose that letter himself.  They are not the sort of words he would ever use and he can't even speak English.  Its good to have a team of brown nosers !

I genuinely hope that Mr. Biden didn't even open the letter, saw it was from Tyrannical Thailand and threw it in the white house bin.

I'm hoping for a much firmer stance from Joe Biden regarding undemocratic nations, being the Democratic Socialist that he is..

Thailand is NOT a democracy and thus should be treated like an active dictatorship. Minimal contact and minimal trade.

We have quite a bit of yours  ,  go away Troll Yank Basher , China Apologist

OK, enough smug talk, Mr. Prayuth. When will you permit imports of U.S. pork? And when will you lower tariffs for U.S. goods in general that reflect the same low level that Thai goods enjoy in the United States? True "bosom buddies" don't take advantage of one another, you know?

He wants the trade privileges under GSP restored, while he doesn't want to lower tariffs on US goods and wants the US to allow Chinese manufacturers to launder products and services through Thailand. All that is "Global Unity!"

Tell Biden to send in the troops. Only way Prayut will leave office.

Global Unity.... Thats a big, big concept.

Maybe in the next lifetime.

Let's see what Senator Duckworth and her colleagues have to say about that, for next foreign aid financial package to Thailand.

Good luck, General.
