The police chief said he has asked Krungthai Bank and the Government Savings Bank to suspend debt payments   Of course! Normal people's possessions will be repossessed if they don't pay but

  • Oh my, it's called reality. When you cannot afford to take out a loan you shouldn't.  Why would anyone bail out an individual for taking a loan on a car?

Wow, fewer checkpoints and graft have created a mess it seems.  Never spend more than you can cover.  As my old man would say don't write any checks your body can't cash.  As a US founding Father once

If you can't afford it, why are you buying large items like cars and houses in the first place?

They use to be able to afford it......extra income from casino, traffic fine etc.....now traffic fine I dun pay on the spot, ask for the 500 baht ticket or mail to me, i pay direct!!.......maybe that's why they need to look for more side income as more speed camera set up and lesser income for them.

There should be no special treatment of Police debts. Let them sell their assets and settle their debts, like everybody else has to do, especially all the unemployed people. The Policemen didn't lose their jobs and should live within their financial means, like everyone else.

Everyone should pull their cash out of Krungthai bank and any other bank that gives special treatment to Police.

Is it just coincidence there are no tourists here at the time of destitution probably not????

How does a police chief know about the financial status of all his officers?

Ahh, you obviously missed the bit about the NIDA Super poll where they questioned 10 police officers.

Funny.... the national police chief didn't seem to mention this little gem from recent weeks as perhaps one of the reasons his officers have so much debt:

https://forum.thaivisa.com/topic/1201398-5-police-generals-embezzled-covid-allowances/?tab=comments#comment-16163619

"BANGKOK, Jan 13 – Five police generals and 48 police colonels are among 189 policemen found embezzling the COVID-19 allowances of their subordinates.

Police inspector-general Pol Gen Visanu Prasarttong-Osoth said police at all levels are entitled to an hourly allowance of 60 baht for their COVID-19-related services which were capped at seven hours a day.

The Royal Thai Police Office completed the first round of its investigation into alleged embezzlement of COVID-related allowances."

Wonder why???

Sounds like the police have taken a page from the teacher's union book. If I'm not mistaken they usually complain about their members debt every couple of years asking for loans to be forgiven. The idea of paying the police a better wage is pointless. Like most civil servants in Thailand the police need to pay for their promotions I will bet much of their debt has gone there. Paying them more will not help them, it will only increase the amount they need to pay their superiors for the next promotion.

7 x 60 = 350 (you can see why they employ me to teach maths in English!) That is more than the national minimum (effectively the national standard) wage for most people!

Quite a generous bonus, if it wasn't being stolen by their bosses!

Aren't the cops eligible for government housing too?

Ahh... government housing for Thai police...

Remember this old gem. A lot of the news reports only talked about the abortive police station construction plans, but better reports also included the fact that some 160+ police housing projects were among those that were supposed to have been built, presumably to replace or expand older police housing.  But who knows whatever happened with those.... And the ultimate outcome of those police housing developments doesn't seem to have been much reported.

Suthep Thaugsuban insisted Monday he was innocent of graft in a 5.8-billion-baht project to construct police flats and police stations in 2009....

The NACC also found grounds to prosecute Mr Suthep over the construction of 163 blocks of police flats...

I wonder how many regular Thai employees have been getting hourly pay bonuses during the COVID pandemic?

If only the Thai police actually turfed out (fired) all the senior officers who've been assigned to the downtown BKK "inactive posts" bureau over the years for alleged corruption and other misdeeds, I suspect the RTP would suddenly be saving enough money to pay off all the accumulated debts of the entire police force!!!

However, the upper echelon has apparently absconded and stolen the extra money due to the lower level folks.  Corruption knows No bounds

I suspect this is the kind of news report that is likely to make lots of ordinary Thais REALLY mad when they read/hear/see versions of it in the local Thai language media...assuming they do.

Especially considering the existing general opinion that most regular Thais seem to have of the local police force.

Sh..., now I remember.

Last time I met a girl. At the end, I asked for a receipt for tax purposes and if she charges VAT.

Still waiting.

According to Google.

Thailand's police forces number about 230,000 officers.

270 billion in debt. Some impressive individual debts

158,256 are Generals.

That has never been a thing here in Thailand.  The privileged families want to stay that way.

Banks give government workers loans very easily. And often arrange special deals on interests and payments for them as well. One of the reasons the jobs remain attractive despite the relatively low salaries.

This will look like small potatoes if they ever really do away with backhanders and brown envelopes.

Still, I wonder how much of that 270Bn is in home mortgages...

Never buy anything you cant realistically afford. Always has been and always will be my mantra.

I can sleep at night knowing everything me and my family have has been paid for. No one can come knocking on the door saying we have missed a payment.

are they getting a fair income?

If not they should - but immidiately removed from the force if they are found corrupt

Suwat told Thansettakij newspaper that around 209,000 officers had taken loans to support their family or to purchase large items such as cars or houses

Too right .. why walk into debt when you can buy a motor an' drive into it ..

An' Merc's to put on the drive don't come cheap you know ..

Didn’t expect much positivity on this thread but I’ll give it a go .... when I first came to Thailand 15 years ago the police were way more corrupt then they are now . I’d be stopped continuously and fined for absolutely nothing . The last 5 years it rarely happens and if it does they actually give me a ticket to pay at the police station . Maybe they are all getting their handouts from other sources these days but they have improved .

What a deluge of negative <deleted> comments have ensued, I doubt any of the derogatory comments that have been posted on in this topic would have been, if any of the posters had family in the Thai police force. I do. My brother in law, was in the police for 30 years, he is now retired and lives with his wife, my wife's sister, in a basic shop house in Bangkok, for which he has just finished paying of his mortgage at the age of 65. He raised 2 daughters whom have both done well through Uni degrees etc. but never have I ever seen any sign of flash money involved. Just give a thought to some honest people that work their asses off.

He is also seeking ways of generating more revenue for his subordinates.

Is this guy taking the pi$$? As if they aren't creative enough in finding ways to "generate revenue". ????

With all the revenue streams they have generated, how in god's name can they be in debt?!

Living beyond their means and trying to keep up with the Jones' I suspect.
