Phuket and Samui - and border areas - prioritised in second stage of vaccine rollout

Channel 7 reported that the second lot of 800,000 doses of coronavirus vaccine would be heading for Phuket and Koh Samui.

 

They will be used in the tourism destinations to jab people in the tourism industry and others to help promote confidence among tourists ahead of the opening of the two islands. 

 

Doses will also be going to 10 provinces that border Myanmar given the emerging crisis there.

 

They will be given to security and front line personnel dealing with problems in the border areas, said assistant spokeswoman Dr Apisamai Srirangsan.

 

Dr Apisamai also noted that discussions were underway in the small committee of the CCSA with tourism and other business leaders about the opening up of Thailand according to a three phase plan - April 1st, July 1st and October 1st.

 

She said that Thailand had recorded 39 new cases of the virus making the total 24,536 with 1,366 still undergoing treatment.

So Samui will be a tourist Beach Paradise Bubble.  Very nice, now what happens when the rest of the Thai population from other areas mixes with these bubble vaccinated tourists and they themselves have not been vaccinated.  Or will there be a separation line with concertina wire separating the tourists from the domestic tourists?

why do tourists need confidence if they have already been vaccinated?

probably need to be vaccinated to leave the islands.. domestic tourist or otherwise!

I'm sure they will come up with a plan to contain any risk. How well will it be really enforced is the real worry...

I suspect those locals arriving in Phuket will be forced encouraged to get a vaccine

but samui (with only 60k population) suppose to be opening on 1.10, together with pattaya, krabi and chiang mai (which are very large population and are not islands, i.e. vaccination program should be wider, than just tourist areas).

 

all this daily changes of policies who and where to vaccinate shows, that program is not well thought and it's execution will have hiccups/will be a failure.

 

I wouldn't be like in shoes of local population even in prioritised phuket. There just might not be enough hospital beds, when different strains start arriving from all around the world.

 

so awaited tourists from china will be coming from a country, which is under reporting pandemic.

same goes with the neighbouring cambodia - officially there is no covid, and there is not a single death, but my pharmacist friend from siem rep told me recently that virus is ripe there

Other articles said that the foreign tourists in question need to be vaccinated (twice) at least two weeks before arrival and not earlier than the months before.

I think you missed my point. Those of us in Thailand as well as the Thai's traveling domestically are not vaccinated as of yet.  Vaccinated folks can still be infected and can still pass on the virus to others.  Being vaccinated only keeps you from becoming very ill, hospitalized or possibly dying, when if unvaccinated the chances are greater. That's why separation should be done.

I hope they've also got adequate stocks of coffins, as sadly there's only one way that reopening the country to foreign tourists, as things stand, is going to end.

I was led to believe that the Paradise Bubble was only for certain hotels.

Under this scheme - tourists were not allowed to stay anywhere that they wanted.

Most of the vaccines would be given to the staff in those hotels/tour guides,van drivers etc etc.

Amongst all of the confusing announcements - real tourists do not arrive until October (maybe).

Those of us in Thailand probably have higher risk to catch a coronavirus infection from some infected local people commuting, or from illegal migrant workers, than from double-checked folks arriving from abroad.

 

There is a lot we still don't know for sure about Covid, but to my knowledge they will still be testing everybody arriving, and the first week tourists are not allowed to leave the arrival area. However, 1st July is 3 month ahead, a lot can be changed, or more details added...????

The articles about vaccination program said that 70 percent of the population, including expats, should be vaccinated – it was calculated that there live around 130,000 people on the island, including to about 60,000 House Book-registered – so circa 90,000 shall be vaccinated before real tourist opening, which so far is 1st October.

 

The present vaccinations in April are for frontline staff in contact with vaccinated tourists under 7-days fairly free resort-quarantine restrictions.

Because they can still become infected by the virus ! It isn’t life threatening if you’re vaccinated, you can get a milder infection. You can also infect others, although the final trials will only be known hopefully in the next 6 months . Then the follow up vaccins will be modified to also include new variants. It’s a miracle these vaccins are already here, you can’t expect more than is scientifically possible.

You missed the point. Tourists are vaccinated. If they catch Covid, it will be mild, ergo they don’t need confidence, they know THEY are fine. But the rest of us who come into contact with them.....

Completely unworkable, the whole thing is either click bait or someone trying to keep themselves in a job. It actually raises more questions than answers.

 

* What happens to domestic visitors?

* Can children / under 18s visit?

* What's to stop visitors travelling north to other areas?

* What about resort workers that live outside the bubble who commute in?

* What happens if you are arrested, take ill or need to get home immediately?

* Will the sex tourists be paying for girls to visit them from Pattaya?

 

Like I said, it's completely unworkable.

As was pointed out to me in an earlier similar thread about Phuket, if the tourists have been vaccinated then what do they have to worry about from the locals? Which then, of course, raises the question of why they need to prioritise vaccinating those in the tourist industry, but that would be seeking logic and could end in madness.

Just imagine being a tourist here on a 2 week holiday after being vaccinated, and then just prior to flying home they have a covid 19 test so they can fly, and then they test positive.  2 more weeks in Thailand in a hospital just for being asymptomatic.  Get my drift.

And right there is the major issue that Thailand will be unable to address.

Firstly a viable plan that can actually work has to be put in place to prevent " residents " from leaving, and " transiant " people from entering.

As soon as the smell of Tourist Money wafts over Thailand there is going to be  a mad rush by all and sundry to try and milk that Money, and they will descend in droves to the areas designated to that end.

Make sense, sinovac has less than 50% effectiveness. You may just need several shots.

We are going to have travel bubbles in our home towns and villages that basically bridge to Samui and Phuket via Ranong, and Chompon ?

Curious to know where all these tourist will be coming from. UK and most of EU have a travel ban with UK imposing £5000 fine for anyone leaving or trying to leave without a good reason and definitely not just for a holiday. I've heard nothing to the contrary to say this has been lifted. That said, everyone who has arrived who had negative Covid test before flying plus two more while doing 15 day quarantine, the percentage of infected people are extremely small and those who were had questionable tests or none at all before arriving in quarantine.  Providing EVERYONE has a proper test and is proven negative for Covid plus double dose vaccination before even setting foot on a flight to Thailand, there is every chance they will be perfectly safe and so will the people they come into contact with. The bigger risk as many post have commented on, is migrants workers working without vaccination in any of the tourists areas. The vaccination roll out in Thailand in tourist areas is going to be key to making this work and I for one would be happier having a vaccine, even if it means paying for it, before traveling around Thailand.
