An interesting story, thanks for narrating!

The big question, was it worth it?

No question, like beauty, in the eye  of the beholder.

It took me about 1/2 hour to get a yellow book and less than 15 minutes to get a pink ID from my local Amphur.  I must live in a good Amphur as the Amphur offices and well as our Amphur hospital are highly efficient.

Which Amphur office was that?

Anyway with said paperwork and a visit to the Amphur from our Kam Nan...easy. Lady in charge admitted she had never seen a pink card before since I was the first to request one so ordered a couple up..from assume.. HQ...Vague memory.. cost was either 100 bt...or free...Mai K Jai.

Might be worth a read...fio...Pink ID Card for Foreigners in Thailand.. By the Ministerial Regulation of Section 5 of the Civil Registration Act, BE 2534 (1991), as amended by the Civil Registration Act (No.2), BE 2551 (2008), the following definitions shall apply to persons who are Non-Thai nationality;.    https://www.isaanlawyers.com/pink-id-card-for-foreigners-in-thailand/

Got mine last year... a few of the usually hoops to jump through (MFA varification of the translation of the notarised copy of my passport and a 1+ month wait for an appointment at the Amphur office).

I’m not sure why the Yellow Book and Pink ID is such a debated topic (in other threads), it seems there is some bitterness from those who think they don’t want one.

There seems to have been a lot of threads on this topic recently, is there a growing requirement to have a Yellow Tabien Baan and Pink ID ???

I can assure you they are not always easy to get. Some Amphoes and Khets try to make it as difficult as possible by asking for things that are not really required. Others will just give you a runaround about what is needed.

The last time we tried we did not even get to point of what was required at that time. The person that did them was not working at that time. Making a wasted 60 km trip was no fun. Then another time of trying when my wife talked to the lady on the phone the day before and she said she would be working and then we got a call about halfway that that she was not working that day.

The is no requirement to have them. It is convenient to have them for somethings you need to do but not mandatory.

Thanks for both ubonjoe! My Amphoe insisted that I had to be resident 12 months and legally married to get a yellow book. As we know, neither are the case. After both applied I asked again. Was told they needed another certified copy of my passport (already been to British Embassy for one for marriage) plus birth certificate. I refused to go to Bangkok again and left it there. Since learned that they would have rejected my translated and certified birth certificate because it's an older 'short form' that doesn't have what they desire i.e. my parent's details. A kind ThaiVisa member advised that I can easily request a 'full form' version. Unfortunately, it it headed 'Copy of entry on Birth Register'. The Amphoe see the word 'Copy' and reject it because it's not an original document. You just have to laugh!

Congratulations on getting your pink ID card. Do I remember correctly that you relocated to the UK, specifically to London, some years ago? Nice to see you, one of the earliest members of ThaiVisa, back in Thailand.

P.S. Your Latin (see your signature) needs some brushing up, but it's nice to see somebody who likes this old language.

As far as I am aware obtaining a yellow tabien baan and pink ID card is only a formal requirement for those intending to apply for permanent residency or Thai citizenship. From my perspective their usefulness would be limited by the fact that neither includes one small, but IMHO vital, piece of information: namely, the date when my current permission to stay in Thailand expires.

"Formal requirement" is an imprecise term. There are

  • regulatory requirements that are being enforced, either partially or fully, and
  • regulatory requirements that are not being enforced

Currently, the yellow house registration book for foreigners is in the former category.

The regulatory requirement derives from Section 38 of Civil Registration Act, as amended:

Being listed in house book for a minimum of 6 months is also necessary for those applying for a license to possess a firearm. That's slightly academic though as most non-Thai citizens have zero chance of receiving such a license.

Useful info for some wanting this card. However, the first paragraph on that page is wrong. Thais don't need both housebook and ID to vote, open a bank account, or apply for a job.

These cards were produced for migrant workers, to keep track of them. This is a requirement, but some farang seem to think it is desirable to have one.

"These two IDs are needed to transfer land, to vote at elections, to apply for a government job, to open a bank account, etc."

A friend in a remote Amphur had the same issues, played ball and provided everything requested each visit. The final straw was when they stated he needed to own land.

I took him to the Provincial Amphur to make a formal complaint, however they were unable to over rule the decisions of his Amphur, but suspected they were unfamiliar with the process, hence the ridiculous requests.

They offered two solutions.

1. Make a formal complaint to the Ombudsman, who has the authority to over rule an Amphurs decision, but it can take time.

2. State he lived at my address and they could add him to my Yellow Tabien Baan, then after 4 weeks apply to change address. They removed him from my book and issued a letter for his Amphur to issue a new book for his (new) address in their Amphur.

Worked a treat, no problem.

Different procedures to apply for a TB in the first instance, than already being registered in a book and obtaining a new one for a different address.

The reason I got a yellow housebook was to apply for Thai citizenship.

You could tell the townhouse that you need it for this reason and if they don't give you one they are breaking international law.

Ah, so much easier in Laos to get the equivalent of a pink ID card ????

When I got my first business visa in Laos, my local ID card was provided as well, without a single document needed, except for my passport and a couple of photos....

Isn't it a requirement there?

When I did my yellow book in 2010 they said a police check had to be done so took about 6 weeks to get the book. When the pink card became available, that was very quick and free.

Without the Yellow Book you will have to pay property tax if you are owner of a condo. You need the Yellow Book to proof that you live in it to avoid taxation.

Many thanks for both tips! Never thought about registering myself elsewhere and then transferring to my real address.
