Finally some good news: Thailand tipped to ease 90 day reporting for foreigners

The Thai government is set to revamp its immigraiton rules - including the  90 day reporting requirement - in a bid to attract more investors and retirees.

According to Bloomberg, the government has set up a task force in order to help make it easier for long term tourists and expats to stay in Thailand.

“We want to make it easier for foreigners to live and work in Thailand,” Chayotid Kridakorn, 54, a former head of JPMorgan Securities (Thailand) who is now leading the new task force, told Bloomberg.

The task force will propose a number of measures to the government aimed at boosting investment and tourism.

Among the proposals include relaxing immigration regulations for visa applications, work permits and 90 day reports.

Bloomberg’s article echo similar proposals first reported last month, where the Thai government aimed to target so-called wealthy retirees  from Scandinavia, Europe and East Asia including South Korea and Japan, as well as Australia and New Zealand.

The types of foreign retirees targeted will be those who have a healthy pension pot, with the ability to spend 200,000 - 300,000 baht per month.

The government says that if it can attract one million retirees each spending 100,000 baht per month or 1.2million baht per year, that would generate 1.2 trillion baht per year for the economy.

Meanwhile, a source at the Ministry of Energy who spoke on the condition of anonymity told Thaivisa last week that proposals to ease restrictions on foreigners buying property in Thailand are now at an advanced stage.

Some of the proposals include amending the Condominium Act to allow foreigners to purchase up to 80 percent of a single condo development. Currently foreigners can only own up to 49 percent of the units in a condo development.

The government also wants to attract foreigners to  buy a second home in Thailand.

In order to do this, it is proposed that foreigners will be allowed to purchase and own outright a house located on a development valued from 10 million baht, with a land size of not more than 1 Rai.

Trouble is any "rethink" will involve a (suitably expensive) tracking app/device/QR code to keep their beadies on us even more closely.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

Just get the 90 day online report working again or scrap the whole thing , don’t overthink it and over complicate it with a concoction of stoopid new rules ................................ I know, I know, wishful thinking on my part ????

If they do away with the 90 day, they lose some control.

I see it never happening.

i hope they don't throw the current retirees under a bus to accomodate the new (richer) batch they expect will be bashing down the door to get in..

only for the new batch to look at the hoops and say <deleted> that..

devils in the details lads and based on recent history this mob only considers their wish list

still here's hoping!

how stupid.... retirees who spend 200.000-300.000 a month.. that will be a lot of people to come..But of course government want to give something, but with so many additional issues( example look at all the paperwork for coming now to Thailand needed for a visa)  that is almost impossible to do. except the very rich of course, but would they choose Thailand to retire??

I wonder how many were drinking out of the same glass when they came up with this cunning plan.

I believe any changes are likely for the benefit of wealthy Chinese, Korean and Japanese investors; probably at their Governments' behest; rather than those of us from Western countries. He who pays the piper picks the tune.

It won't happen because of a missing element. A rethink requires that a think was implemented initially. There is no evidence of a think.

Yep I'm sure they do.

In saying that these have been, without a doubt, the best years of my life.

As far as I'm concerned it's my money and very well spent! So to the other detractors I say:-

"Your jealous, = who gives a toss."

Also a "rethink" requires a brain in working order with an IQ above 40, that rules out just about all in the government

No good news coming as many would believe, in short, Thailand will only be open to rich Chinese people who have the capacity for large investments of at least 1O million, and this is their real plan of action so talking about "The types of foreign retirees targeted " is absolutely ridiculous. So as past actions show let's get ready for heavy new money implications if we want to stay in Thailand.

You're right of course, I don't have any problem with how you spend your money.

However, it's a bit vulgar bragging about money and property, especially when the reality is that you don't really own most of the assets you claim to have.

So I stand by my original label, but I also respect your right to spend your money how you wish, however frivolous.
