(Reuters) - Thailand's health minister said on Friday he expects the Southeast Asian country to receive 10 to 20 million doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine during the second half of this year.

Thailand so far has received a total of 3.5 million doses of a vaccine developed by China's Sinovac Biotech and expects delivery of an additional 2.5 million doses this month.

"Pfizer is coming," health minister Anutin Charnvirankul posted on his Facebook page.

"We expect to receive 10 to 20 million doses," he wrote.

A separate statement from his party said, if conditions were met, supplies would arrive over the third and fourth quarters of the year.

Thailand has been rushing to secure additional vaccine supplies since April after seeing its deadliest wave of infections so far.

On Friday authorities reported 27 new coronavirus deaths, matching its second-highest daily rise in fatalities.

The Southeast Asian country also reported 2,044 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 78,855 since the pandemic began last year.

The total number of deaths now stands at 363.

Thailand plans to inoculate 70% of its government-estimated population of about 67 million Thais and 3 million foreign residents.

Still no agreement with Pfizer so these words are useless. Actually worse than useless as they are confusing.

More details by dep-govt spokesperson
@ttraisuree
: She says
@pfizer
 will deliver their #COVID19 vaccine “in Q4/21” (Anutin said “Q3 or Q4”) and they’ll only seek authorization with
@fdathai
 once a deal has been reached and will talk only with the govt, private sector later.

He needs to keep quiet until he has some real news.

"Thailand expects up to 20million doses of Pfizer vaccine from July"

A very crafty and misleading headline that gives Anutin plenty of room.

He could deliver 10million in December and still considered met the target...

A better estimate would be between 10 -- as in ten ONLY -- and 20 million.

Pfizer Inc.’s chief executive said that low- and middle-income countries had opted not to order the company’s Covid-19 shot,
“We reached out to all nations asking them to place orders so we could allocate doses for them,” Chief Executive Officer Albert Bourla said in a letter addressed to Pfizer employees. “In reality, the high-income countries reserved most of the doses. I became personally concerned with that and I reached out to many heads of middle/low-income countries by letter, phone and even text to urge them to reserve doses because the supply was limited.”

There is a reason the lower income countries didn't reserve the shots because they were asked to put up down payments for the vaccine at the development stage to guarantee priority delivery. Not many have the budget to put up the money when there wasn't guarantees the vaccine would work. When the trial results were promising, the rich nations already were Long in front of the queue. The Malaysian minister in charge of procuring vaccines literally said the pharma companies were selling to the rich countries first but he didn't explain the fact.

Instead they're perplexed.

About 6 months too late. Even if sufficient vaccines become available immediately there is no chance of actually vaccinating sufficient numbers to reopen for International or Domestic Tourism this year.
