I have successfully linked my laptop to my TV for several years now. Last week we had a severe local thunderstorm and the link no longer works. I had an older back up computer and managed to link that successfully, so I assumed it was not a problem linked to the TV but was associated with the laptop. I checked all the various settings which seemed OK so called an engineer to come round. After 15 minutes of testing, he said it was to do with my HDMI port/ internal computer board and could not be repaired.

Does anyone have a constructive comment on this as it sounds to me like a hardware problem that could be repaired. I know my next step is to take it to an IT shop but with the current Covid problems and me being old and sick, I wondered if any Thai Visa IT specialist had any ideas that might make that trip unnecessary.

If, as you imply, your computer is several years old then it will probably be best to replace it. I would assume the internal problem can be repaired but it may need a new motherboard depending upon what the problem actually is.

If this is the case a new laptop will be the best way way to go as the repair could be very costly

Thanks for the advice. It is 6 years old.

Brand names and full  model numbers of both laptop and TV?

What is the reason for the connection? General browsing on a bigger screen or viewing media on a bigger screen?

I had the same problem with my Lenovo.

The dealer got it picked up, sent it to Lenovo and 3 weeks later it was back working. Did not pay a thing, still under guarantee.

If you have a USB typ C connector, you could get an adapter to HDMI and see whether that works.

Never mind the experts. Ask Google and you may find that many others have/had the same problem and worked out a solution.

I speak from experience with an 8 yr old HP windows 8.1 and the experts - too old need a new one, cant fix.

Search Dr. Google

Typically HDMI ports are a component part of the mother board and also typically are not replaceable.  It would require a new mother board.  If the other suggestions here do not work then yes, it is time for a new computer.

I recently had a similar problem on my desktop, which was quite long in the tooth. Any hardware that is tied to the motherboard is not repairable.

Had a computer shop rebuild the desktop with a new motherboard, CPU and RAM. It's like a modern car compared with a T model Ford now.

I think you need a new HDMI cable with higher version,it will provide power and contents protection. Then Update your PC driver.

If its not gonna work, GPU is broken.

I think its about graphic board, maybe busted.

Unless it's the motherboard damaged. A HDMI port can be replaced in your laptop . Think your engineer doesn't know what he is doing very good. If motherboard is damaged then time to replace your laptop with a new one. The cost will be about the same either way. But really think you should consider second opinion at a good shop about the HDMI port. I have had mine changed before. Also it's entirely possible its the HDMI wiring from oc to tv. This also happened to me after plugging it in a few times. Wire get bent in the connection.

Am I missing something here?

A lot of posts suggesting a surge may have come down the HDMI cable from the TV and into the laptop.  That's possible, but what about a 6 year old laptop with a dead battery running off power from the power point and a surge burnt out the power charger, so now the laptop is dead because the battery charger is dead, and so is the battery?

OP, have you tested a different battery charger?

Did the guy that came around test the battery charger?

I think you should read the OP his posts again. The laptop is not dead its just the HDMI connection that is no longer working.

Make sure to use a surge protector with your new computer. I learned the hard way during a lightning storm here.

Thailand have the 2 Pin power points and most properties are not earthed.

Most surge protectors need to divert the surge to earth to protect the equipment, that involves having the third pin in the power point.

A small UPS would be better, not for power blackouts, but for absorbing a surge, as many have AVR (Active Voltage Regulators) these days.

Ok, so the link from the laptop to the TV no longer works.   I was thinking the whole laptop didn't work.  I gather the OP has tried a different HDMI port on the TV.

What about a Google Chromecast?

If you do end up replacing it, make sure it's from a reputable shop and if they say they will give you free software like Windows and others, ask if that is in the form of an original disk for you to take home, and if they say, no, download only, then you know they are not a reputable dealer.

Recommend to check on Wish.com for either a matching motherboard or a new laptop. Laptop- and tabletcomputers are very affordable there and may be cheaper than the motherboard and dont need a technician. Good luck.

My Vaio laptop video card damaged and motherboard was replaced for ฿4000, labor included. The cost depends on your laptop motherboard type.
A new laptop would cost much more.

How old is the laptop?? If they are still making the board or whatever that is not working, then, yes, it should be a simple matter of replacing it. Good luck.
