Thai Rath reported that the Thai prime minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has instructed his legal teams to find out how foreign governments monitor content online.

His spokesman Anucha Buraphachaisri appeared to face the press after a cabinet meeting yesterday in which the subject was discussed.

Prayut wants the legal affairs department to conduct a study into how foreign countries control not just online media but people who have large followings on social media.

In language typical of such issues the spokesman said this was so that Thais would experience less conflict and damage and the number of cases brought to court could be minimised.

Prayut suggested that what the Indian government does might be worth looking at.

The Indian government recently announced plans to regulate social media firms, streaming services and digital news outlets

Social media companies are required to acknowledge takedown requests of unlawful, misinformation and violent content within 24 hours and deliver a complete redressal within 15 days. In sensitive cases such as those surrounding explicit sexual content, firms will be required to take down the content within 24 hours.

Social media firms operating India are also required to disclose the originator of objectionable content.

The PM said that at the moment what happens in Thailand is too slow.

It has also been almost completely ineffective, notes Thaivisa, perhaps because short of banning whole platforms like Facebook there is little that can realistically be done to limit dissent.

In recent years, Thailand has been trying to crack down on online dissent, misinformation, fake news and online fraud.

Prayut stressed through his spokesman that he was not seeking a change in the law at this stage, just some ideas as to how better to control online and social media activity for "the benefit" of Thais.

Prayuth should also consider this is a double edged sword .. his administration cannot continue to mislead the people they are supposed to represent with some of what comes out of their collective mouths and at the same time look to inhibit their rights of expression .. ultimately this is to do with exercising control over the populace that they have been accustomed to .. but the internet genie has changed all that and cannot easily be returned to the bottle .. so the emphasis now has to be on trying to control those providers ..

I'm sure there are elements of the establishment who wish the clock could be turned back as far as the internet goes ..

Just go be clear, are you saying that a government that’s successful in censorship restrictions will be fair in how for they’re applied, and will actually be utilized against the government’s best interests?

 Is that what you’re insinuating?

Just get the Thai translation back on Facebook sharpish!!

It’s 2021, a majority of the countries in the world have some variation of authoritative / nationalistic rule, and there are STILL. people out here thinking that protections that can only exist in democracies (and often don’t occur even then) are still possible

I truly can’t comprehend what it must be like to go through life THAT naive

This guy is heading down a dangerous road....  I think we all new it was coming.

This quote springs to mind “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely”.

This is a step away from George Orwell’s 1984 ’Thought Criminals’.

Controlling freedom of speech is a total attack on basic human rights... People should be free but also responsible for what they publish and speak (libel / slander).

Thailands 'Defamation of Character’ laws are draconian and atrocious, they only serve the wealthy criminals.

Thailand needs to completely do away with its draconian Defamation of Character laws (and a famous ‘other)... and apply regular libel and slander laws (as we have elsewhere).

Also, freedom of speech comes with responsibility. IF people post lies, fake news etc make them accountable.

Is he looking directly at Thai visa? I hope not but if he is then we all might be moving to the dark web. Better start packing he's got a mean look about him.

Why doesnt he just ask the Chinese?

  • Popular Post

This government publishes fake news, inaccurate data, personal opinions disguised as official decisions like there is no tomorrow.

Does that mean now that they start censoring their brain diarrhea as well?

Now that really would start a revolution. Yellow shirts , red shirts , high so and low rampaging through army barracks baying for Prayuth and friends blood.
