A poll has revealed that the vast majority of Thai people want the country opened to foreign tourism in 120 days.

The "Super Poll" conducted last week came after Thai PM Prayuth Chan-o-cha stated his aim to open the country up by the end of the year.

91.4% of people polled nationwide agreed with the reopening plan wanting to see everyone vaccinated with at least a first dose.

But when asked about their fears 96.3% cited illegal entry of foreigners noting that the government had been negligent in allowing migrants to cross Thailand's porous borders reported Daily News.

More than 90% also pointed to fears about illegal nightclubs and new variants causing more Covid-19 infections.

92.7% pointed to gambling and drugs adding to the pandemic woes.

94.9 want the government to make sure everyone gets their second dose of vaccine by early next year.

In other questions posed 84.7% expressed concern for the two years of lost education for Thai children caused by school closures and disruption to learning.

1,069 people from all social strata were asked questions from June 17th to 19th under the banner "Views on opening the country in 120 days".

Quite a turnaround from just a few weeks ago when a similar percentage wished for Thailand to remain hermetically sealed until the Second Coming of the Buddha.

  • How can they say the 'vast majority' after polling just over 1,000 people? Ridiculous!

No numbers over 100% Check.

Still, Saddam Hussein-like election victory percentages.

Super-duper poll.

I wish these polls were in hard copy, sure I could find a good use for them in my bathroom.

As usual, the politburo has manufactured very agreeable results to support the wonderful job of our “democratically elected government” which recently showed it’s colours by abstaining on a UN motion regarding Myanmar’s military junta.

Nice conflation of two related but distinct items in this quoted answer.

I thought we were looking at a very best case scenario of end of 2021 for all Thais to have had a first dose. How does that reconcile with a 120 day tourist re-opening?

Different polling organizations.

So called Super Polls amazingly always show strong support for the regime's "plans".

So they've given upp 70% fully vaccinated before they'll open? Can't wait until 2023, can they?

You can never poll everyone to get the full picture. You need a sample of reasonable number of people. The trouble is that by how you ask questions, and how you choose people, what data you then include in calculations and what you exclude gives you a blank cheque to tweak the results to any way you wish.

The way I read it the main outcome was the all wanted to be vaccinated and have their old lives back rather than be wanting the nice tourists back.

Tourism does affect a massive percentage of the country directly so why should they want it over their own safety in a poll?

Wouldn't it be great if those dirty foreigners could just send the money rather than having to actually come here?

Virtual reality tours, they could even replicate the fetid smell of the drains like they do with Viking settlements at the Yorvik Viking Centre in York, England.

We'll look back in 10 years at the Soi 6 Pattaya bars with their cam shows (mug punters sending money for the girls to get shots of coloured water) as pioneers of virtual tourism in Thailand.

Didn't know that.

A new low, if that were even possible now.

Funny how these "Super Polls" always seem to reflect what the government wants.

Not too long ago "a vast majority" of Thais wanted to keep the country closed to foreigners -- because it suited the government at the time.

And now "a vast majority" of Thais want the country to re-open to foreigners -- again because it suits the government.

Vaccinated and tested people of course they do.

95% of Thais are neither.

so tourists do need 2 shots, and some will have already their 3rd shot (which is recommended sometimes over 6 months from the second shot), but thais will have 1 shot (sinovac, which is the most common in thailand gives only some 5% protection from the 1st shot).

my wife doesn't think it possible to open for tourists - so for me the vast majority of thai have an opposite opinion to this poll

Keep the country closed (entry with quarantine allowed for vaccinated non residents) but allow vaccinated Thais and foreign residents to travel and return without quarantine requirements would be my conservative/self interested vote.   That wasn't a choice on the poll though.

The degree of pain and suffering due to the tourism shutdown, is unfathomable. The tentacles of the industry reach out into many areas. Thailand needs tourism. Trillions of dollars have been spent on tourism infrastructure. It must be supported.

This paranoid and timid administration has sabotaged the tourism industry. I suspect beyond repair. I do not think it will ever recover to even a pale shadow of what it once was. And that means millions of jobs lost.

Prayuth, Anutin and Phiphat bear huge responsibility for the current grave state of the economy. The closing of tens of thousands of massage shops, bars, restaurants and hotels is your fault. You have caused much destruction. We know this. Nothing you say to deflect blame will change this. You will be held responsible. You are destroying the progress of your nation.

I am sure they do

ask an obviously stupid question and you will get a stupid answer from a population that are desperate

Is this Prayut trying to show he has support

Here are two good questions for a new Poll

Should the Thai government support all of its people with welfare payments and furlough until the panedemic is over

Should the PM and all the DPM's be sacked and replaced with competent people

The Dunning Kruger Effect is evident here.

As a professional statistician, I can tell you that there is no practical benefit to be gained in polling more than 1000 people (even in a population the size of the USA) for such a survey, provided (as always) that it is a properly randomized sample.

I am sure they do .... wonder if they ever blame their government for the current situation or if it's the farang's fault

Just proves to me that atleats 91% of Thais have absolutely no clue as to the efficacy of the Chinese first jab !

Most Thais don't think the virus exists, if you can't see it,  touch it, taste it, or smell it, it just doesn't exist. to many. But the masks are making them think again, mostly on clear days.

A year or so ago when a similar poll was conducted, 90% of Thais said keep the foreigners out.

Yes, but their money has run out now

I read report that scientist believe that if you only get one injection of the Chinese vaccine you really are not protected from the virus TIT

Second country to report a covid case slowest to respond trying to save face and money a perfect storm created by a Czar ????

@spidermike007 I agree with you 100% but no different to most world leaders in dealing with this virus, totally disproportionate to the threat that it poses to the majority of us.
