Reopening bars: People drinking alcohol are difficult to control and risk spreading virus

The Committee for Covid-19 Situation Administration has placed the blame squarely with drinkers of alcohol for not opening pubs and bars in Thailand.

Dr Aphisamai Srirangsan said the CCSA sympathized with the industry after they begged the government to let them reopen the multi-billion baht industry last week.

But, she said, infections of Covid-19 are caused by the "actions of people" and people drinking alcohol make it hard to control situations, reported Siam Rath

She said they lose their restraint making bars and pubs hotbeds for the potential spread of the virus.

She urged pubs and clubs to demonstrate how they can mitigate this tendency and show how they can reopen safely.

Thaivisa notes that such comments are likely to enflame industry leaders who say they have fallen over backwards to ensure safe environments for people to enjoy a beverage.

What is a massive industry in Thailand is currently on its knees begging to be included in other businesses that have been allowed to reopen this week and in recent days.

Yet the authorities, with the good doctor included, continue to blame drinkers above most others.

Why can't they open bars (the type you see Soi 4) and Pattaya and many sport bars along with all restaurants and just keep night clubs closed.

Just make hours closed at 11 pm or even 10pm.

Between this wave and previous wave I would sometimes wander into stumble Inn soi 4. Over new year Pattaya same around soi 7/8, it was dead. There are no tourists here.

Open the bars and keep night clubs shut.

Shout out to Udon bars. Hang in there.

I understand that alcoholic beverages will not be available in the 'sandbox' of Phuket for now, so what those hundred of thousand of tourist to do with no alcoholic drinks available? drink cola or pepsi?...

Its also non essential unlike food and drinks.  Its asking for trouble to open bars, on the other hand the employees are getting nothing.

So they should just keep the bars shut but pay money to bar owners and their employees.

That's true, the actions of some members of this government in frequenting hi-so brothels in Thong Lor then running away and denying responsibility in particular.

It's obvious this administration has their backs to the wall as in every announcement they seem to be blaming the people or suggesting spread of the virus is down to individuals themselves.

Think the bars etc are now open in Phuket or will be open shortly. There was recent news release. Someone can confirm or otherwise.

That just changed today. Restaurants can now serve alcohol.

That will enflame things even further...

Blaming the people again.

Ironic, seeing as government officials were involved in the thong lor outbreak that started this huge wave.

Think you will find its bars also.

Bars are not mentioned in the latest news from 2 hours ago.

...but I have no idea that they will open quickly when 37 people arrive in the first week.

Better than nothing

What is wrong with people who cannot do  without  a slurp, surely better to become heroin dealers and join our glorious leaders as proper role models to the youth of today at the crystal hubbarubbadubba.

Apparently there has been a massive u-turn on the Sale of Booze on Phuket for the sandbox.

All those so desperate to climb onto a Bar Stool can now do so in Phuket.

Bon voyage !

So alcohol has a no can control stigma by them which they don't care about the peons of the general publics life or livelihoods, but when it concerns not bringing in proper vaccines eons ago for their reasons, driving the country into huge debt, eating at the trough and their net worth growing, then why doesn't the shoe fit on the other foot? I also remember some of their boys getting caught up in celebrations spreading the virus. but that was wiped clean off the table. Do as I say and not as I do!

Is she talking about now or before they shut them down.

The question is not whether it is better than nothing. The question is whether it is better than competing destinations that are likely closer to home, cheaper and do not have silly alcohol bans.

What does Phuket have to offer in its current state? Beaches covered in oil and Beer Chang from 711 to consume in your hotel room (as long as you time your visit to the shop correctly and it’s not some election or religious holiday).

People will simply go elsewhere.

Desperate sex-tourists and those with vested interests in Thailand may still come.

The days of mass tourism for families from Europe, Chinese tour groups and other similar demographics are all over for the foreseeable.

Most sex tourists like to hang out in bars with a beer though, bragging and generally talking nonsense to other sex tourists.

If they just want a bunk up in a hotel room they can do that in their home countries and save thousands on flights and hotels.

It is kind of like the: "guns don't kill people, people do" thinking.

Singha does not spread the virus.

And locals have restraints in markets & selfie places....... please!!!

what is this nonsense about "reopening" just when the virus is on the rise in Thailand ??

Individual drinking capsules for one.  Accessed from the street by separate door with vending facilities inside, paid for with a card. Sanitised between each use.  With charging station for mobiles!
