Despite widespread public criticism of inappropriate spending and alleged over-pricing, the Racha Thewa Tambon Administration Organization (TAO) Council, in Bang Phli district of Thailand’s Samut Prakan province, has decided to spend another 68 million baht on installing an additional 720 decorative lamp posts in the sub-district.

At a meeting of the council on Tuesday, 15 council members approved the controversial project, while five others objected and four abstained.

Mayor Songchai Nokkamin told the media, after the council meeting, that the project to install the lamp posts was incorporated into the TAO’s development plan and the local people of the sub-district want street lighting, especially in areas where there currently are no lamp posts.

Ask them if they want their money spent on 94000 Baht per lamp post.

A proper LED lamp (alone) costs less than 5000.

Can't tell what an ordinary post costs.

Talk about '   ' fiddling '  while Rome burns '

Utterly irresponsible and indulgent behavior. Don't let a state of emergency stop the flow of brown envelopes. Live for today !!

Good point.........thank God the UK has had the good sense to only order one £200 million yacht and two A350's during the pandemic....phew.....go Bunter.

Have to go there with my dog, he likes lampposts.????

Sixty eight million...while Thailand is in a financial "mess", & as Colin says people are starving.

I'd love to know the true cost; someone must know.

after complaints of dogs weeing on their legs if they stand still for too long .. especially after dark ..

USD 2,230,000 would go a long long way to help people out, but what do they care as they probably are wealthy already. Here sin CM they have thrown more big baht down the toilette again paving roads that are perfectly fine. Now these several hundred millions of baht funding it is only maybe keeping the contractor with the road paving machinery and maybe 10 workers working. Total waste of money and this is just yet another round of paving as they have been doing it all over CM for the past 4 - 5 months +.

Is this the same sub-district that already spent 642 million baht for 6,773 solar-powered street lamps?

Then there's Hat Yai which spent 33.4 million baht for 368 lamp posts.

These 'Counselers' are all in it for the millions that will be creamed off and should all be fired but we know nothing will happen; they are just taking what they think is their right as they watch people further up the ladder helping themselves every day.

The local council put these in not long after the road had been resurfaced, looked nice for a couple of weeks while they all worked, about as much use as a chocolate fireguard now.

Hell of a difference between "worth" and "cost".

I don't think those lights look 'suai' at all, with the solar panel sticking out the top.  No problem - those solar panels will disappear in the bat of an eye over the next few weeks, and reappear at grandma's shack in Issan....

They should shove them up some back sides where the sun doesn't shine.  Light them up.

Dear Mr. Mayor.

Here you go. On Lazada. American design, 500 watt solar. THB1299.  By my reckoning, for 68 million baht, you could buy over 53,000 of them.

Ok, make an allowance to buy some poles for them and I am sure you will still have enough to light up Samut Prakan like a Christmas tree.

I think I need 6 for my wall posts, they will look so much nicer that the rather dull white glass globes I currently have...... apparently I have to pay some guy 10,000 baht to be passed onto the next guy who wants 94,000 baht for each one.... a bargain. Any chance of a Covid jab to be included?

Sign the order.

Zero chance.

This is about Thailand and not the UK. Surely there is a UK chat group to express those distant and irrelevant views.

It's well within the bounds of Thai culture's artistic invention of Neogaudyism.   I kind of like it.
