It’s like they’ve never been away! Video shows foreign tourists enjoying Phuket Sandbox

A video posted on TikTok shows tourists enjoying themselves during the first few days of the Phuket Sandbox project.

The images are reminiscent of Phuket in the pre-pandemic days of tourism, with Western tourists outside enjoying their stay on the island.

In the short clips, people can be seen socializing, drinking and eating while being entertained by street performers.

It is understood the video was taken at an event organised by the Tourism Authority of Thailand to welcome some of the first visitors to the island as part of the project, with more events due to be held throughout the month.

Over the weekend officials announced that around 1,800 tourists had arrived on the island since the start of the Phuket Sandbox project on July 1.

On Monday, Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Thai embassies around the world had received a total of 7,980 applications for the Certificates of Entry for people wanting to visit Phuket.

Tourism chiefs also stated they expect a total of 12,000 tourists to visit Phuket in July with weekly flights now available from Copenhagen, Frankfurt, London and Zurich until September.

The normal Friday evening market at Boat Avenue, Laguna area of Phuket, its just down the road from where we live, we go there every week to eat. Its always busy, I guess TAT added a little show to it for the camera's.

Some people can only be made happy with failure so they can say 'told you so'.

Actually I think it was a great idea to bring a few tourists along to the Friday market and mix with the local expat community who go there weekly. They should have also taken them to the Bluetree market on Saturday which was just as busy, great evening with some excellent food and wine, local expat families enjoying the ambiance, kids playing on their skateboards at the park. Very surprised they did not bring their cameras there with the tourists in tow.

I would prefer to see some reports by expats, rather than what you, and TCT, want us to believe.

Why'd you think it's on tik tok ? Probably as their videos can only be 30 seconds or so. If I drove around deserted Pattaya I am sure I could film 30 seconds of people together to make it look like a normal season

Thank goodness the tourist industry in Phuket is back in full swing - I wonder what a panoramic shot of that photo would show?

Anybody tell me why when I type "Phuket" on this forum it shows up as an error - siting "ketchup" as the possible place I really meant?

Propoganda, much like the artificial villages shown to the past Russian Czar as he was driven past. Everything looks good within short eyesight, but go further afield and see the reality of despair.

They're not tourists they're guinea pigs. If they can survive two weeks without a case we can continue with the reopening. If the virus takes hold, well, they're only farangs.

and some are basically so unhappy and unsatisfied in their Thai life they can't stand the idea of anything good happening to Thai people nor westerners enjoying themselves here. Immature, bitter and lacking the courage to go elsewhere while they spend their days complaining - while unable to take that deep look in the mirror (wherein the problem truly lies)..

Getting out of the UK is proving the most tedious expensive exercise in travel known to man????????????????

of course it looks like they are enjoying themselves, almost everything in the tourist beach areas is closed.

I can imagine that the guys were overjoyed to have their wife/GF distracted by some show for 30 min and not have to listen to her complain about having to eat at the same place every meal,

and with the shops closed he cant even give her a few thousand baht and tell her to go shopping so he can have a few hours of peace and quiet.
