#BreakingNews #newsupdate A new Covid-19 variant – a hybrid of the Alpha and Delta strains – has been discovered in Bangkok, the Department of Medical Sciences reported on Monday.

The new variant was found among seven workers who tested positive at a construction camp in the capital.

Thai construction workers infected by hybrid of Delta and Alpha variants

A construction worker was found to be simultaneously infected by both the Alpha and Delta COVID-19 variants, while six others were infected with a hybrid strain of the two, according to Director-General of the Medical Sciences Department Dr. Supakit Sirilak today (Monday).

Expressing shock by the finding, while reassuring the public the seven cases were not severe, Dr. Supakit said this is why it was necessary to seal worker housing facilities in and around Bangkok late last month.

The cases remain, however, of concern and follow-up monitoring is needed, to prevent infections by two virus strains at the same time from spreading to the point that the combination of the strains in a single host result in a new variant.

I am sure those facilities are not truly sealed. There has to be some food delivery, and medical staff.

So, the new variant is probably already out there.

I think someone may think it’s a way of rationing out the meager supply of AZ. Now only one dose instead of two, so can go twice as far. SMH

Touche! OK the only way I can weasel my way out of this is to say they are cheaper than Pfizer and Moderna.

New variant found in BKK being reported. Alpha+Delta hybrid. Ok old news on here. Sorry bit late. Well this should be interesting. Sure govt response will be it's just a misunderstanding. Everything is ok. People are not dying, soon to be tens of thousands not infected and openning up will go ahead as planned.

New mutations aside, the infection rates as quoted in that other paper are catastrophic:

Of all 1,737 workers at the construction site, 1,327 tested positive. Among them, 23.3% were infected with the Alpha variant and 73.7% with Delta.

That's 75% positivity!

That's herd immunity! See the bubble and seal works and is now this is being implemented for the whole country! So we don't really need vaccines as the Thais are going old school!

Yes, my wife is there now. I was shocked to see 105 cases. She says people wear masks to the market and shops etc, but around the village among themselves, hardly at all. It only takes one infected person, down goes a whole village.

It’s a very big province of course. I don’t know how widespread these cases might be.

Positive test results yesterday in Udon Thani.  Positive findings are growing rapidly.

The PB are saying it's co-infection with people having two variants at the same time.

I would perhaps feel nervous if I already had an AZ first shot and appointment in place for second shot.

What do you do with a greeting .."we have sinovac only. Take it or leave it".

That was always a possibility even prior to recent events surrounding Sinovac.

Hello darkness, my old friend: the first evening of lockdown in Bangkok begins. BTS Mo Chit, usually packed around this time of the day with cars and passersby, is empty. Public transport will stop service at 9pm, while restaurants must stop selling takeaway at 8pm. #ล็อกดาวน์

When we left the condo for our evening run tonight in Lumpini Park the security guards reminded us to be back in before 9 pm and also reminded us that the park closed at 8.  We went for a quick jog and returned through the gates just as they were preparing to lock up the park.  It was fairly empty when we went and the guards also reminded us that they would be closing at 8 so not to dawdle.  We arrived back home just a few ago, and found an ambulance parked out front with the PPE suited EMS personnel waiting for someone who was inside our complex.  We of course walked around and in through the garage to the stairs and then the elevator.  Looks like we now have another infection in the building.  Waiting for the morning to see if another sign goes up by the juristic office and in the hallways on all floors.  We obviously did not stick around to see if we knew the individual.  Sad but it looks like we will also be curtailing our late night runs.  Time to use the treadmill I bought last year during the last lockdown.  Be safe folks.

If you have had one dose of AZ, it seems that your second dose will still be AZ.

They talk in this article about shortening the time between 1st and 2nd jab by mixing sinovac and AZ. I’m not sure how they can do that when AZ is in such short supply. Perhaps the rate of 1st sinovac jabs will have to slow so as to match the AZ  doses that are available

"Expressing shock by the finding, while reassuring the public the seven cases were not severe."

Alpha and Delta each have several different mutations, combining them could further challenge vaccines. If would certainly give doctors even more reason to challenge the Government and health minster's vaccine plans.

"Dr. Supakit said this is why it was necessary to seal worker housing facilities in and around Bangkok late last month."

Not sure that will stop it ...  The 6 hybrid virus cases are out of the number they genetically sequenced, not the number of cases tested. So there are likely more.

I wonder which camp had the hybrid virus?
