Harmless gathering or serious crime? Thai media reports arrest of SEVEN at pool villa having some drinks

Thai media Daily News continued to make a big deal of small infractions of the Covid-19 regulations.

In their latest report they said that Department of Provincial Administration and Mae Rim police in the province of Chiang Mai acted on a complaint from neighbors.

They went to a resort that had pool villas in the area where the owners allowed them access.

There they detected "loud talking" and sure enough, there were 5 men and 2 women having alcoholic drinks (spirits and beer).

They were all taken to the Mae Rim police station and charged with breaking the Covid-19 rules on illegal gathering.

There were no drugs involved, it just seemed like a private party.

They are likely to face heavy fines and a court appearance for this, notes ASEAN NOW.

This report isn't complete until we know the origin of the spirits... and if any used condoms were found. ????????????????????????‍♂️

Let's see here. Seven adults having a private gathering were dobbed in by a neighbor. Rounded up by up to half a dozen cops (and an undisclosed amount of media), they were all driven to the police station where maybe another dozen cops and an indeterminate number of the public were 'exposed' to the thing that got them arrested in the first place.

Nice work. The coronavirus really appreciates the extra effort lent by the Mae Rim BiB in helping it move around in these difficult times.

What part was illegal ........ renting the Villa ......... drinking alcoholic drinks .........

6 people in one dwelling doesn't seem illegal, most houses in my village have that number or more per house!

Next door to me Grandma and grandpa, two kids + two spouses, 4 grandkids.

And they have a few beers in their front garden every night.

This is again, such a dumb sample of ridiculous law enforcement. Completely stupid.

Looked through my Scandinavian glasses is it "harmless gathering", but looked through Thai law it's "serious crime". When we had hard lockdown where I live, two people drinking together in a private home was a crime - my GF and me had to dine separate if we wished to enjoy a glass of wine with our dinner...????

We are living in times of extreme cognitive dissonance and psychotic insanity and this nonsense will psychologically affect many individuals for the rest of their lives.

I now drink alone in a locked room with the curtains drawn and a towel thrown over the laptop ....... just in case!

My heartiest commiserations.

...why cast aspersions on the young women?

So what if they were a family of six or seven. They are in a private house, not a bar or restaurant. Also, when was the total alcohol ban implemented. there is nothing to say that you cannot have a drink in the privacy of your own home. I also thought gatherings in private houses were allowed up to about 12 people?

I guess someone who lives in C.M. will know more, but it seems the whole world is slowly going to hell in a handcart.

Stupidity everywhere, innit!?

- a dumb law, although I understand their reasons

- a bit dumb of the kids who did this, then went on to make a noise

- equally dumb to bring in lots of cops and maybe media, further exposing them to this killer flu!

Although we could argue that they could be a family larger than 7, this is a resort and a certain number of people checked in (using ID cards) and possibly invited some friends who hadn't checked in.

Dangerous behavior at this time.  Can't confirm nationalities but it makes no difference.  When will people learn and comply with rules established to help curb the spread?

I guess the answer is that in your private dwelling people reside, regardless of occupancy numbers, the difference being they rented a villa for the sole purpose to meet and party.

That has been regulated.

Agreed. And where are the pictures of pointing cops?

The public spectacle has been shortchanged.

Tell me about it BMT. On a quiet evening, there's near enough a dozen of my tribe, including the lurkers and spongers, making yahoo at dinner time while I sit on the front stoep with my Jack-nam and a stogie or two.

Why accuse them of being young?

I'm not. I'm referring to a similar report last week, in which the reporters made a point of saying the liquor was foreign and used condoms found. It's just me being me. ????????

I know you didn't. I was responding to @tandor's comment.

That was me being me.

Their neigbours must be real w-anchors at heart.

What can you say? The place just gets more crazy every day.

At the end of the day we all know what this was about.

The neighbours were <deleted> Off because there was a party goin' on and they weren't invited!

Thais tend to talk very loudly at each other (party or not)!

When my GF gets on the phone I admonish her to the next room or even further!

But, I rarely call the cops!  :cheesy:

An opportunity for police extortion. Remember the bridge party a few years ago.

Poorly organised ‘mass vaccination’ at Bang Sue Station in Bangkok....  Vs 7 people having dinner with some beers.

I know which one is criminally negligent and which one is just dinner.
