Foreign ministry pullling out all the stops to get vaccine - Thailand belatedly set to join Covax scheme

Sanook quoted the IT expert and spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as saying that the ministry were working hard all over the world to secure vaccine deals.

Thanee Saengrat said that his chief Don Pramudwinai - minister and DMP -  had ordered embassies and consulates throughout the globe to make representations to get more vaccine.

This was being done in China, the USA, Japan, India, South Korea, Australia and Russia.

He also spoke of vaccine swap deals with several countries including one with Bhutan. Under these deals Thailand gets vaccine now and pays it back later.

Thailand is also finally preparing to join the Covax scheme and payments have been made to the WHO to facilitate this.

Thailand has been widely criticised for not joining the scheme earlier - something done by several other countries in the Asian region that has aided their vaccine rollouts, notes ASEAN NOW.

"to make representations to get more vaccine"

... I'd have thought the more certain, and better, approach would be to just order vaccines from the manfacturers (albeit that will put you at the end of the queue).

"make representations" sounds like beg, borrow or steal ... it might work, might not ... meanwhile more time runs by.

Well they tend to put their eggs in one basket without much thoughts to the consequences.

I was in Antartica last week, a small community. No one from the Thai MoFA was there or planned to be.

Everyone says that they know who to blame for this mess, but the Thai people (other than a few scattered students) have decided not to do anything about it. So... that's it then.

out of hundreds embassies, consulates, trade offices, non permanent diplomatic missions - with eight countries are in talks.

This ministry does employ thousands, they need a lot of high quality and many vaccines, because they are good people.

Check with them, how many had already 3rd dose

More accurately, joining the scheme was something done by ALL of the other countries in ASEAN.

Some even suggest too greedy, imagine a few chewchow  hounds and master hop to get a new monopoly on a regualr expensive necessity, lucky noblesse oblige and rich important people are standing back so the poor and old the halt and lame of any nationality esp their servants get protected before fit rich folks. It is as Jesus and the Lord Buddha taught.

Sir Philip Sydney was described as the greatest Englishman, fatally wounded at the battle of Zutphen he donated his water to a poor footsoldier with the immortal words

"HIS NEED IS GREATER THAN MINE".

.Same courage as Bunker Hill, Stalingrad or Gallipoli this is what distinguishes our humanity form vultures. Interesting what statues are erected says a lot of about the grip of history.

This decision alone, based on greed, should warrant them both to be jailed. Pinocchio and his faithful Rin Tin Anutin

The morons running the country were (as always) too busy working out how to skim a little from the coffers to actually do the job they are paid to do!

We will never know how much was skimmed and who received what but as sure as hell you can guarantee all the dirty little fingers were in the pie!
