Superman is Bisexual -- thanks but no thanks?

I'm all for representation of LGBTQ people in all kinds of entertainment media, but when I heard the news of bisexual Superman, it occurred to me that this isn't good for the gays.

Superman Bisexual: Jon Kent Comes Out - Variety

Superman is an international icon.

Why is he bisexual, and not just gay?

If you're going to go there, why the ambiguity?

Sure bisexuals exist but in homophobic societies declaring yourself as bi  is a transparent hedge. I remember as a kid when Elton John came out as bi and it was a very big deal, yeah sure, he's bi, that's the ticket.

What about the international backlash?

It's already started in anti-gay / anti western propaganda media coming from Russia, which represents a lot of other countries that are going backwards with LGBTQ civil rights issues.

Superman as bisexual is surely good for getting free publicity, but is it really good for actual LGBTQ people in most of the world? I think it's the opposite.

So thanks but no thanks.

I think LGBTQ is now officially old skool.  The latest alphabet soup I saw was 2SLGBTQQPIA2+.  The 2S is for 2-spirit, and the P is for pansexual (or was it Peter Pan - not too sure). And the LG and the BTQQPIA2+'s have fallen out with each other because the T's think the LG's are not inclusive enough, at least in the UK.  The B's are all very confused by it all and don't know which way to swing - some want to have their cake and eat it too.

Also in the UK the official medical term for those formerly known as "women" is now "people with a cervix" or "persons with a vagina" to clarify that it's probably not essential for the T's to bother with a cervix smear test. And if you think I'm joking, just google it.

The word "woman" is now considered not inclusive enough - intersectionality in motion.

As for Superman, at least he/she/they/zim/zer/zie (or whatever preferred pronoun "they" choose) is still called Superman regardless of (insert appropriate pronoun) orientation.  I dread to think what would happen if they tried for a remake of Wonderwoman - probably insist the role is played by a 2 Spirited pansexual unicorn of no fixed abode gender, cervix optional.

So is Superman dating Robin now ?

what next ,he has a baby? i have never had a problem with gay  people even back in the 60s in London ,nobody seemed to give a toss, but  to be honest i cant be bothered with all the nonsense that is going on these days .I really think half the "non binery) crew and the like do it just to be "with it" wow thats so 60s isnt it ????

Because I can't easily get my head around the various identities, doesn't mean they don't exist.   As near as I can tell, if you weren't straight in the 50's, you were mentally ill.  In the 60's you were straight or you were gay and if you were gay, life could get pretty rough.  Slowly change has come and attitudes have progressed.

I think many of us knew people who claimed to be bi but the general consensus was they were just gay but afraid to come out of the closet.   But even as the stigma of being gay was fading, some people still seemed to drift easily and freely between the sexual partners.  We knew people who liked to dress as women, but weren't transgender.

Now, once people are much more free, they are a lot of things I never imagined.

Gender Dysphoria. Can be Mental Illness or Genuine Biological Defect. Highest Suicide Rates.

BBC doc. covering successfull well - adjusted pre- pubescent trans kids in UK was most illuminating.

First, this is Jon Kent, who is Clark Kent's son.

Superman is a title, not the characters name. The OG Superman's name is Kal-El aka Clark Kent.

Second, I guess a being from another planet, with godlike powers, that looks like the perfect vision of what a "man" is supposed to look like just HAS to be straight, right?

I don't know who's worse, the Super Wokes or the Super Jokes.

In case you weren't being sarcastic, no, he doesn't HAVE to be straight.

I took my 8 year old boy shopping at the week-end , he saw a Superman T-shirt in the LBTG colours and wanted to buy one .

I didnt let him buy one, and he got a Black & White Superman T-shirt instead .

I am the Papa, I will decide that .

I thought that it was quite subversive , getting Children to show alliance to a cause , when they have no idea what they are aligning themselves with  .

He liked the T-Shirt because it was colorful, rather that what it stood for and hes far too young to be making those decisions for himself

Exactly. He like the shirt simply for the color. It was YOUR insecurity that made the decision for him. As parents, sometimes we project our insecurities on our children, which only reinforces the negative habits we developed. It's a shirt. Nothing more.

He may have been bisexual in the 1930's but no one knew what that was?

Its a shirt showing support for the LBTG cause , something that he is unware of , so he would be showing support for the LBTG cause without realising it , so it would be subversion and exploitation .

He would be wearing a shirt because he liked the colours. WE are the ones that make things bigger than what they need to be. Don't get me wrong, you're child, your rules, but it's you that has the problem with what the shirt represents, not your child. Your child sees a nice shirt with cools colours. Period.

I do not have a problem with what the shirt represents , not bothered about the LBTG cause , I just dont think Children should unwillingly  be used to promote the cause .

If its just the design, what if he saw a Swastika T-shirt and liked the design of that (Not that I'm equating the two causes) , should I buy him a Swastika T-shirt because he liked the colours and design ?

My argument is that he wouldn't know the history of the Swastika. He just sees it as a shirt he likes. We are the ones that put the connotation on it. And it's not like someone is trying to push an agenda. Again, it's a child liking a shirt. I don't know how old your child is, but maybe if he's old enough, talk to him about what you believe the shirt represents. I would take the same position with the Swastika.

Most people aren't bothered at all by this latest revelation.  The noise you hear is coming from the usual suspects on the far right.  These nutters have been around awhile and largely ignored, but were given voice during the Trump years.  They'll be back in their caves soon enough...once they realize that Dear Leader Trump is not coming back.

Please no swastikas.

Not Trump again, do try and forget about him, not everything revolves around Trump .

Why dont the LBTG people invent their own superheroes , rather than taking straight peoples ?

So LGBT people should be segregated as if they're not fully part of societies?

How evolved of you.

In my OP I mentioned international backlash but as has been pointed out its in the US as well. Its interesting and frightening that anti LGBT  propaganda from Putin and the American largely trumpist pro autocracy right wing are identical.

I can kind of see what you mean, but I think you are seriously overthinking it and making it into a big deal,

You have to ask yourself why you are making such an issue with this.

I mean I bet you let your kid buy shirts supporting football teams, cities, have flags of a particular country on them, or have brand names on them......

Your kid won't be old enough to know that wearing Adidas top is marketing and supporting that brand, or wearing a t shirt with a cartoon character is supporting Disney franchises.

What is next...you will ban him from painting a rainbow or only let him colour in back and white?

It's just a t shirt that looks nice!

When he asked you why he could not have it did you tell his it was because he would be supporting gay people and that is wrong?   Or were you secretly afraid he might be showing that he may be gay when he grows up?  If so that shows that you are massively insecure about that issue, or are just plain homophobic.

Yes...if he came to Thailand he would be in the detention center by now having be thwarted by the immigration smart car driven by some Joker.
