A spokesman for Thailand's Royal Navy told Naew Na that submarines were vital for the country's defence.

But they had decided not to buy new ones for now.

Vice Admiral Pokkrong Manathatphailin was responding to reports that second and third submarines were not in the navy's buidget plans for 2023.

He confirmed that this was the case saying that what with the state of the Thai economy and the pandemic the money would be used for maintaining the fleet and looking after personnel - especially the lower ranks.

But he stressed that subs were vital to national security and when the time was right and funds were available they would buy more.

Typical military:

he sings the song of the top military leader.

Otherwise .......ehm, ehm,ehm.

What they want and what they are capable of manning are decidedly different beasts.

He's been nobbled by that Air Force chap and his need for newer fighter aircraft !

Do not even mention China. What would Thailand do with a few subs?

Give them up. Who will pilot them? Hello! Show the people you care. 22 billion is the official number for the program. But, since the first one is already up to 13 billion, the numbers simply do not add up. As usual. What about experience? Thailand has not had a sub for over 60 years. Who will pilot this sub? Who will maintain it? How much is the projected annual bill for repairs, and upkeep? Do you army clowns care one iota about the people? Just be honest, for once, and admit that you don't.

just get those 8 F-35 fighter jets for now and we'll look at 2 or 3 new nuclear subs later.

Not buying them now = Smart.  Vitally still need them = Stupid.  Truth = want them, not need them.

They need them to justify wearing all their Boy Scout medals.

Along with any other superpower Thailand should have subs.

And cruise missiles....and nuclear weapons

Afternoon jumping off high tables earns these here…..P Company it ain’t …

What nonsense from grinning idiot having a laugh contradicting himself.

As Thailand has Zero Enemies ( bar a few Malay insurgents military has no clue how to stop) No Military at all is necessary.

Not much needed for upkeep when it will lay alongside the rusting Aircraft Carrier and only be open to THAI people during annual open days.  Meanwhile they will both be fully crewed 'just in case' they have to go to sea in Combat...Lol  !

If submarines are "vitally important for Thailand", meaning they are essential for the continued existence of Thailand, then get them, right now!

If you have determined that you don't really have to get them right now, because of this, that and the other, then Snookums, they are obviously not vitally important for Thailand, Q.E.D.

Now, if we replace the "Thailand" portion of your statement with, hm let's say "the Boys", then it suddenly all makes sense...

Got them for jumping off the conn tower into the water.

Just get the one for now , play around with it for a couple

of years and if you don't break it or get stuck on the bottom

of the Gulf of Thailand.... then look at getting more , but why

they are vital is beyond me.

It is also one of the most polluted places on the planet and the whales living in the Gulf are starving cos there are not enough fish and they are so small. Saw a video on Youtube about the starving whales.

Complete garbage.

Has Thailand got deep enough waters for a submarine to serve its purpose I don’t think it has and if that’s the case it’s pointless having one

I feel the same about going on a diet to lose weight--vitally important but not right now.

Just like the aircraft carrier?

It can't be long before we hear that they are going to build the first submarine aircraft carrier for the F-35s.

I cannot agree. The CIA agents based in Pattaya have proof that Laos is going to invade Thailand to control the world’s Somtum production.

I'm thinking the French are wanting a place at the submarine buying table now that Australia isn't buying French subs. Gonna make negotiations more interesting perhaps.

????Well, every country certainly needs a true Intelligence Agency if only to be properly informed rather than defend itself !
