Thai Rath reported that officers of the ATPD - the country's anti-human trafficking police - became aware that someone was offering underage women for work on Twitter under the name "Pepsi".

That 'work' it later transpired was as a prostitute.

Secret operatives showed an interest and were directed to a Line application account number fiaa69e where they made the acquaintance of a transgender man called Sofia.

Subsequent inquiries indicated this was Suphalak Chumphan, 37, a resident of Muang district.

He was offering a 17 year old for sex work.

A sting was set up at a Muang district hotel in Phuket on Wednesday resulting in the arrest and charge of the procurer and his detention by the ATPD.

Taken into evidence was an iPhone 6.

He reportedly admitted everything.

What is the actual legal age of consent in Thailand?

[Not including family members agreements]

There us usually a thread running about that topic on ASEANOW , and it usually consists of where the Worlds lowest age of consent is , seems quite a few people take an interest in that subject

for commercial sex it is 18 I believe.  There is always a difference between that and romantic private encounters.

For anyone who is a foreigner, under 18 is guaranteed jail time.

This whole charade is so hilarious, would it not be that a young girl her future life is destroyed by a crook without scrupules.
This "madam" should be jailed for life.
But everybody know that this is only a smoke screen and there thousands others like her offering young girls for sex.

Book a room in any hotel in Thailand and tell the receptionist that you want a girl to spend the night with you.
He/She will pick up a phone book and start calling a girl who is free that night.

Go to ANY motorcycle taxi stand or any Tuk-Tuk stand and ask them taxi stand driver for a girl to have sex with.
You will be served in no time.

People who still believe that prostitution doesn't exist in Thailand need to do urgent a brain check.

Nobody  believes it doesn't  exist but the issues are about consent and age. I've  never heard of receptionists or motorsai boys being involved in helping sex workers! We don't know about the relationship between these two characters  but it sounds like a couple of friends, amateurs in the P4P game fell foul of a hypocritical  law. Young people  are having sexual relationships at an ever younger age these days. Police  getting involved and prison  will ruin their lives more than sex will. Loads of girls here seem to dabble in sex for rewards  here. It's called compensated dating. In the UK promiscous teen slappers give it away free and seem to exert less control over their lives and bodies than Thai girls.

infact , bringing prostitutes back to your room is frowned upon and often forbidden

Why? Just another guest.

How would they even know one is a prostitute?

"Book a room in any hotel in Thailand and tell the receptionist..."

Thai-bashing nonsense.

They're not difficult to identify as such.

She was 17, hardly a "child".

In the law, it would be regarded as engaging in  Child prostitution

I think it would be regarded as having sex with a minor.  However it is defined, and legal definitions aside, a 17-year old would not usually considered to be "a child" by most people.

I would not call 17 year old a child.

Like arranged marriage?

Every once in a while stories pop. 13 year old in Chiang Mai, and in the south, certain allowances are made for religious purposes, so maybe as young as 11.

Why is that important? He, she, it, they?

A 17 year old girl was being trafficked.

If she was your daughter, would you really be interested in whether you referred to the trafficker as 'he' or 'she'?

Really dumb post!
