Assault on Kiev: Russian helicopters swoop above Ukraine's capital

Featured Replies

Just noticed this from a UK Defense Ministry Update a couple of days ago, the incredible amount of armored vehicles that Russia has been losing daily.

In mid-October, in the face of Ukrainian offensives, Russian armoured vehicles losses increased to over 40 a day: roughly equivalent to a battalion’s worth of equipment.

Don’t hold your breath. And if they do provide evidence it should be examined very thoroughly, because it will most likely be fabricated.

This proves that what happened in Bucha was not ‘random’, but planned and strategic. All the more reason to have a war tribunal when this is over, to identify and punish those responsible for all the atrocities committed by the Russians.

Ukraine war latest: Iran admits sending weapons to Russia after denials

A significant development has emerged from Iran this morning regarding the "kamikaze" Shahed-136 drones Ukraine claims have been used in the war.

Hossein Amirabdollahian, the country's foreign minister, has acknowledged for the first time that his country supplied Russia with these drones.

However, he insisted that the transfer took place months before Moscow's war on Ukraine.

Several analyst think it may be a trap. Knowing how desperate Putin is, it may not be a trap using conventional means.

They’re getting crazier by the day. But by all means, send the young to die and wipe out an entire generation. And feel the results for years to come as Russia tries to rebuild the economy and there are not nearly enough young people to fill all the vacancies.
Do these pundits ever think things through? Or do they just utter every brain fart that pops up in their minds? My money is on the latter.

I think Putin was blinded by his desire to rebuild the Russian empire as it existed under the Soviet Union, and is now desperately trying to avoid a loss that could mean the end of his reign, and possibly the end of his life.

You are correct about the consequences:  Russia was facing a demographic crisis before the war, which has been made much worse by the wasted lives and exodus of young people.  Russia will be weakened for decades, perhaps permanently.

I think Putin is a tiny little narcissist with a huge inferiority complex. I feel sorry for Russia that such a psychopath and the clique around him can screw up a country like they’re doing. So many lives devastated, both literally and figuratively.
Russia could have been a completely different country, open and democratic and prospering, but instead the selfish elite chose to rob the country blind, tell the people nothing but lies and brutally suppress any kind of opposition. I really wonder what’s to become of such a sick country. But then again, I wonder the same about the USA, the way things are going there.

The cannon fodder revolting is called mutiny and usually ends very badly for the mutineers.

The cannon fodder revolting can also be called ‘revolution’ or ‘uprising’ and can (and hopefully will) end very badly for those in power who are sending all these men to the slaughter.

Well, the cannon fodder is expected to die anyway. It's just about chosing how to die.

Indeed, it ended badly for the Tzar, but what odds do you give it happening again now?

I have no idea, the odds are probably hugely against them, but they’re going to have to try something to get rid of that fascist regime, otherwise a lot more lives are going to be lost or ruined.

Take this with a pinch of salt or something stronger but I read recently that the Russians have three lines. The second line is ordered to shoot the front line if they retreat, the third line similarly to shoot the second if they withdraw!

I wouldn’t be surprised at all, the Russian army has a long history of this kind of madness, dating back to (at least) WWII, when soldiers without weapons were ordered to advance and when they didn’t they were shot. That pretty much tells you how little the Russian army has evolved since then.

Do you have a plausible attribution to your statement?

The Russian Federation’s Ongoing Aggression Against Ukraine

Russia’s desperate attempts to take its frustrations out on civilians will not achieve its desired aims, while Russia has been manufacturing international crises and stoking fear of nuclear weapons usage, Ukraine has continued to heroically liberate its sovereign territory.

We cannot allow Russia’s forces to get away with torture, sexual-based violence, and forced deportations,  the sooner Ukrainian forces liberate their land, the sooner these bestial practices will end.  The United States’ commitment to Ukraine has been and will remain ironclad and we will put an end to this madness.

Well the head of Wagner did warn and say this:

Yevgeniy Prigozhin paces about a large group of prisoners, giving them the hard sell on joining the Russian war effort. He offers them a deal: six months of service in return for a pardon for their crimes. But, should they arrive in Ukraine and refuse to fight, they will be considered deserters and shot.

https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/wagner-group-exposed-recruiting-russian-prisoners-for-ukraine/

Russia may be ready to shoot its retreating and deserting soldiers in Ukraine, according to Britain's Defense Ministry's daily update on Russia's war on Ukraine.

"Due to low morale and reluctance to fight, Russian forces have probably started deploying 'barrier troops' or 'blocking units," Friday's intelligence update said. "These units threaten to shoot their own retreating soldiers in order to compel offensives and have been used in previous conflicts by Russian forces."

My bet is the first line would retreat to find the second and third have already fled the scene.
